Agreed, you need the disc, and tell it to do a startup repair.

"Media Test failure" and no OS sounds like a hard drive problem. It's either shagged or come unplugged. look on the bottom of the case for a cover about the size of a fag packet and pop it off to make sure the hard drive is plugged in properly.

Is this the hard drive, if so it was pluged in ok yep, thats the hard disk. Try plugging it back in and give the thing a go. Was it making any dodgy noises/did someone faff about with anything that caused it to not work?

Actually, it looks like it's trying to boot over the network or something. When it first comes on, press F2 and find the option for "enable network boot" and make sure it is disabled.

That setting is not drive related, if you press the hotkey to get into the BIOS, there will be a Boot Order menu where you can take out the ones that you don't need (Like the network) and always have the first boot device as the hard disk.

Yeah, try DEL or F10 etc on boot to get to BIOS and change boot order to HD first.
My laptop failed recently as Vista half booted than battery died and could not find the COMMAND.COM. Fortunately I was able to USB boot into Linux and copy off anything good then let Windows do a repair and now works great. Also nice as lost a lot of those silly programs the wife added (Ikea kitchen designer) so now just the OS and Google Chrome.
