Transmision partly runs on engine vacum so turbo engines are very hard to set up you will not get the overdrive to kick in and it would constantly be in kick down mode. But it is the same basic block, it would also need to fabricate an exhaust manifold because the standard one puts the turbo in the steering rack and bulk head.

Oh well, n/a renault 5 alpine or similar engine FTW then ;-) Are you replacing the Variomatic for a 340 one when you're adding more power?

Or one other random thought: A camshaft driven vacuumpump as used on some diesel engines for the brake servo may fix the Turbo engine problem?

It is a theory that i have considered using a throtle micro switch to turn it on and off.
Have considered a bike engine or an alpine head on a Romanian 1557cc bottom end from a Dacia Nova GT.
Still got alot of welding to do yet

Nice car! All wide and archy All the guys in Holland that run GT Turbo lumps with their varios use a separate 12v tire compressor pump to control the Variomatic. Alternatively: a 5 speed from a 340 is a more or less direct swap, and is less likely to break. Propshaft are also liable to break with that kind of torque.

Hey, it's always nice to see someone modding these cars like they should! 750 KG, RWD, 50/50 weight distribution, potential for bolting in an easy 115 bhp: I don't know why people buy Escorts anymore

i'm getting a bit of a horn for one of these little blighters I must say. The idea of one with a volvo 340 5-speeder is most appealing, althougth i realise thats like putting a Pinto engine in an RX-7 or something.

A build that looks very mean! What size wheels+tires are you running? When I was a kid, I got a ride in a blue Daf 66 Turbo Coupe. It is still a the top of my rides that I can remember. I was all over the rear bench.

wheels are 15x7 and tyres are 195 50 15 they replace the 14x4.5 with 135 80 14 tyres as standard.
nothing wrong with a 340 five speed, i may yet do it if the Vario will not hold up to the power when i make up my mind in the engine front. Main problem is not alot of room in the foot well for an extra pedal.

Thats some nice photos, do you know what the carb set up is on that engine.
Wheel adaptors mate for me, I know you can go 4 stud using volvo 340 bits like in the photos.

Main problem is not alot of room in the foot well for an extra pedal. My brother has a converted DAF with a 5-speed; the clutch pedal is not that big of a problem, the gas pedal is a much tighter squeeze. Even the bellhousing from a manual 340 bolts straight on, IIRC you should use a propshaft from a Vario 340 (they're the right length). You'll need to make mounts for the gearbox (holes of the 340 mounts don't line up). Even the halfshalfts bolt straight on. The real fab work is in making the gearbox mounts, fitting the clutch pedal, and making the gear linkage. Thought i'll have to admit sticking with a vario would be the coolest (V340 varios are considerably stronger than DAF 66 ones btw). By pure coincidence he's got a 5 GT turbo engine lined up for it as well ;D
