Bit of an update... sorta.
redtop2dr P.M'd me regarding his chrysler outboard mentioned earlier... So on friday we made our way down and bought it, Got it home and allready realy chuffed with it i proceded to free up the pivot bearings for the steering, and all the gearlever mech, Got the plugs out and confirmed it has a nice fat spart on both cylinders,
After that i took the carb off and cleaned out the jets and unblocked the float bowl, then one piece of new fuel line and some new hoseclips, cleared out the fuel tap....
IT RUNS! and realy well considering its been unused for years!!, Got it in a bucket of water and its pumping fine too but i might change the impeller anyway... Put it in gear and all good, Think they maiden voyage will be with this motor, When i got the hang of the technique it starts on one pull ;D

Heres the engine... Starting it made me decide the 40 is gonna get run this weekend coming... Regardless. I fitted the impeller and just left it so far , So tommorow I'm changing the fuel lines and fitting new clips. Then checking the cut off switch connections. I think this little chrysler looks just the part.. and for trundling up the river it might be realy nice It certainly does run well

Dan, that looks great! I'm really pleased that the engine has proved to be the right one for you.
It looks as if the engine is the correct 'height' in relation to the bottom of the hull too - should burble along quite nicely!

The little chrysler looks good for river duties, but the big johnson 40 is the engine for this boat (if it were mine).
chant with me now..... get it wet, get it wet!

Dan, that looks great! I'm really pleased that the engine has proved to be the right one for you. It looks as if the engine is the correct 'height' in relation to the bottom of the hull too - should burble along quite nicely! Realy chuffed with it mate Havnt had it running since the weekend and realy expected to have to mess with it to get it going right.. It missed a lil at first but once it cleared itself and i realised it didnt need any choke it was fine , So pretty much if i hadnt been a dick and twiddled with the choke for ages it would have probably started 1st pull ;D Just spent today sorting fuel lines and broken cable clamp on the 40hp motor, Gonna try finish that in the morning, Then get the steering set up finalised, and Ive decided I'm not happy with the way the towsure rollers sit under the boat.. Its too close to taking chunks out of the strake bits. Gonna make them longer so it sits on the strakes rather than up against them. Thats gonna involve jacking the boat up off them and alot of cutting and welding... But with that said and done, All itll need is the fuel tank and front seat.., And some form of pump in the hull ( ill get on at the chandlery) SO heres hoping to very very soon itll get some water action

hmmm, Having some trouble routing the throttle cable.. The gear cable is fine. And ive fabricated a bracket and pivot for the steering linkage, But the throttle cable is too short if it takes its conventional route, And if i send it another way it binds up due to the sharp angle it has to take... Need to rethink this... Quite tempted by the idea of a throttle pedal ;D On a plus note, I feel like I'm getting somewhere. The fuel lines are all done, New vaccum hoses and the bracket that supports the fuel valve and throttle cable is repaired. Ive started on the cabling and setting up electrics now... Once thats done its just the seat and screen ;D

You should paint the engine and shaft, or at least the top cover brown or black

big problem now The 40hp is physically too big The steering rod comes out of the hole too close to the transom to work. It doesnt give enuff throw to give any steering lock.. Theres no way to move it without a serious faff including moving the steering colomn in further and drilling a new hole in the rear end. If the 40 would hang over the rear of the boat more (like the chrysler) then it would be fine, But the mass of it sits over the transom Just don't think its gonna work with that motor... They are physically big engines for 40's anyway.. but didnt expect that problem to be fair..

Post some pictures mate. You can purchase steering link kits for these engines. Post up some detailed pics of the engine on the boat with all the stuff in shot. I purchased a special bracket that bolted to the motor to mount the steering linkage to. There is always a way. Failure is not an option Lewis

lol would post a pic... engine off atm and too heavy to one man lift.. The problem is, (hard to explain) Imagine the linkage for the steering(coming from the steering wheel) is coming out at the back to close to the transom, and the engine is hanging over to far into the boat, so the linkage is effectivly closer to the tilt mechanism than the steering connection of the motor. I got it connected and working but where its so far inboard it doesnt give much throw. If i could connect it where the linkage comes out it would be fine but its impossible as it would come into contact with too many other bits.. namely the bolts that clamp it to the transom.. (they are a tad huge) and changing the clamp isnt an option realy... Possibly gonna get a more modern engine.. 40s have got a bit smaller since the 70's

Move the steering linkage possition?? Not really helpful I know, but powaarhhhh!!! A more modern engine would definatly be a more compact option, but you gotta think about style man Lewis

phew , and update... Went to a boat jumble on the weekend and found another outboard... Its a 9.9 hp chrysler, Same as the other one although lower hp and electric start with charge Its a unknown engine so I'm probably not going to bother running it, But I'm gonna use the starter and tophat lid for the 12.9hp engine... Ill get pics

My god an update Sorta slow progress atm... But every now and then we get a touch done... I'm trying not to rush realy as knowing my luck itll be ready for the water mid winter and that'll p*ss me off ;D Dad got bored the other night and decided he wanted to mess around with it. And seeing as i was busy i thought ill let him mess with the windscreen. He ended up cutting the old one out of the frame after making a template... And then spent the next few hours gouging the remaining perspex and leather out of the frame.... Oh and ive modified the rollers on the trailer to allow the boat to sit more comfortably / not on only one rib.... I cut the New towsure roller bracket and then welded a longer piece of thick box to that. Then used the ends of the roller brackets welded to the end of that. I then bought one more rubber roller and cut it in half. So each side has one and a half of those rollers. A piece of threaded bar and some locknuts and its done.. Its also allowed me to sit in the boat for the first time I WANT TO DRIVE THIS THING!!!!
