After single-handedly staving off the next ice age yesterday I have 8 lengths of teak planking approx 8 feet long and about 7-8 inches wide. They're coated in a tar layer each side but that can be planed off and you might lose a half inch off each edge if you can get them panel sawn to lose screw holes and slight damage from the wrecking bar. they're too good to burn so if someone wants them they can be picked up from Sarf Daaarset or I could bring them to the Gathering. Not for sticking in a log burner or I could use them myself ;D  ...and if anyone's got a rubber fetish then there's a couple of hundred feet of slightly perished first aid hose going free.  |

Hi
Have been following your green goddess escapades with fascination and found your effort brilliant. Seems like a massive job and then look what happens at the end...a FIRE..so you need another fire engine right ?
Which brings me to the fact that I'am about to embark on a SIMILAR project with a green goddess. Scared stiff me.

So the weather's cold and it's bl00dy coupi's fault over the Optimus Primark secret identity of the Goddess. So out with the spare front panel with the decent chrome badge. SWMBO has run the bath, lit the candles and I've just taken her up the large glass of white wine therefore I've got at least an hour on her pristine kitchen surfaces with my dirty automotive stuff. YAY!  Penetrating fluid to ge the nuts off? Do I have some left and where is it? With three sons this is a philosophical conumdrum on the level of what's the meaning of life, the universe and everything? And, of course, the answer is no! So using an iterative and empirical process I find that Extra Virgin Olive Oil isn't so bad after going through most of the store cupboard.   All the good chrome is covered by a sticky brown layer so it's sneak the bits into work and put them through the degreasing tank. Oh no it doesn't work!  . It's not the old engine oil and paraffin that a friend sprays all his cars with so they last 20 years, it's a lacquer that has browned with age. If I use a too harsh solvent then I'm going to remove the red detailing paint in the stripes and letter gaps. So it's scrape carefully with bits of wood and toothpicks so not to scratch the chrome or remove the Bedford red paint.  Cleaned as best I can for the moment  Now how to get an OPTIMUS version of the lovely Beddy badge? First I thought of casting a version in a low melting point metal using a plaster mould. This would be blank and the OPTIMUS characters could be machined/engraved in the blank face. However the devil is in the detail and it would be a b1tch to make a simple mould with the curve of the badge.  So with the curve of the badge being the problem the solution would be a deformable badge. The easiest way would be to use a chrome-platable heat deformable plastic that could either be machined or printed. Now in the Star Trek universe all I would have to do is to go up to my nearest friendly replicator with a pattern or a program and get the part made. Science fiction right? Well no if you have access to one of these ;D REPRAP plastics printer  I'd have to make it in two pieces and machine and glue the two pieces together. The faces would have to ground to get a decent surface for the chrome plating but it would produce the OPTIMUS lettering in any font I wanted. I'd also have to curve it on a former before plating . Interesting times I've foung a place that will make me adhesive Transformers badges so I just need to get a backing plate made for replacing the round Beford logo. |

 Thanks eternaloptimist it's very sleek . Foamite and Pyrene produced airport crash tenders using the Bedford chassis and the short wheelbase Pyrene example below has 'twin carbs'   So that makes it a performance Goddess ;D

A little advice warmly welcomed please on the subjects of radiators and brake linings. Firstly the Goddess radiator is an absolute monster due to the need for cooling while the machine was stationary and pumping water. It weighs about 30 kilos (don't know accurately because SWMBO won't let me use the bathroom scales  ) and its 76 cm wide or 30 inches in old money.  The engine is rated at 110bhp approx and I reckon that a modern rad rated to 150bhp with a good fan should see me through most eventualities so has anyone has a recommendation for a good modern donor? Next subject is brake shoes. The Goddess' shoes are rather large as can be seen below  I'm not sure why the linings are different thicknesses (maybe I've got a front and rear together) so I'll get onto the RSOLES forum and find out   The Goddess' braking system is vacuum over hydraulic and with the cardboard military linings the retardation is likely to be as glacial as the acceleration. So has anyone a recommendation for some reasonably priced performance linings and where I can get them fitted? Cheers, Ian |

there is a place down in fareham called solent truck parts ( www.solenttruckparts.co.uk ) that re-lines brake shoes/ also supplies new ones for all sorts of big machinery, including our battered old converted lorry/bale trailers, they were very useful when i needed a set of brake shoes re lined on my slurry tanker |

Actually not so shameless as my mate's REPRAP has just started smoking (and it shouldn't) so I was on the lookout for another 3D printer to make the design. Maybe your bruv can do it in one piece and I can use the higher defintion of resin to eliminate the face grinding necessary for ABS. Cheers |

It is quite common for shoes to have uneven thicknesses on a leading/trailing brake shoe arrangement (eg.Ford) where the leading shoe does most of the work when travelling forwards, therefore has a thicker lining. |

Sometimes nuffin' 'appens from week to week and if it's a bit slow then lots gets done, usually when I'm on a week I can't get down there and then it's make decisions on the phone. Sorry it's a camera phone through the wire  Anyhoo the rams are fitted and tested  and the wheel arches are welded up. Wheel travel is minimal with the fire engine springs and I don't expect to take it off road (much ;D) and the road tyres are lower section  and the collapsible tilt frame is coming together with measurements for the tilt been given to my man with a big roll of red PVC and a sewing machine.   |
