Would you be better to go for Discs on the front of some sort of modern truck, Call me old fashioned but I like my vehicles to stop, Remember it is 2WD/4WD so fitting discs at the front is likely to be difficult. They'll always stop eventually, but I agree it is nicer if you get to chose when and how quickly. Believe me I agree with you (see below) OUCH!

Martin Jay, the Distributor Doctor, now has the dizzy, therefore the Goddess is totally hors de combat so what drops into the jolly old Inbox but an invite to display at the GRRC Members Open Day in front of Goodwood House on the 3rd August. It looks like my proving trip for RRG14 will be back to Goodwood!
This definitely a "Marty! We've Got to Go Back! Back to the Future!" moment. The breakdowns and the puncture are flashing in front of my eyes as I type. Is this journey cursed?
Members Day is actually open to friends and family so if you fancy a relaxed classic day out near Chichester you can be de facto 'friends and family' for the day (usual exclusions apply, there is no alternative monetary compensation for this offer, etc.)
The programme is like this
GRRC ANNUAL VEHICLE DISPLAY – 3 AUGUST 2014
1030hrs Selected vehicles arrive at Goodwood House for assembly around the carriage circle
1200hrs onwards Harvard Display opens the event - weather permitting. Marquee opens for food, refreshments and live music
1200 to 1600hrs The Shell House opens for tours –Please call 01243 755057 to pre-book
1300 to 1645hrs Goodwood House open for tours – Tickets only
1600hrs Favourite Vehicle Award presented
1700hrs Vehicle Display closes

Cursedy cursewordy curse-word! The Distributor Doctor has given his diagnosis and the DMZ6A is no more! It has ceased to be! Bereft of life, pushing up daisies! It's expired and gone to meet its maker! It's shuffled off its mortal coil. IT'S AN EX-DISTRIBUTOR!! Basically the DMZ6A has no bearings or bushes. The steel shaft runs directly in the dizzy body and it's critical that the distributor is regularly lubricated. We've lubed it but obviously when it came out of Home Office stock some P.O. didn't and with a wobbly rotor arm shaft it now has a magical mystery points gap. When the dizzy is in the block it's difficult to check but when it's out it's very floppy. Distributor Doctor has some new ones at £300 each but only with either Jag or Austin Healey advance curves and neither would do a Bedford much good. Plan now is to bore the returned dizzy body and fit bronze or oilite bushes. This means Goodwood is almost undoable and RRG14 is iffy if the modification does not work or I burger it up. I have a Megasquirt sat at home for an abandoned Healey project and I'm just wondering..........

I think the advance curve is determined by the weights under the plate the points sit on - anything stopping you using a new body and shaft and swapping everything else over?

Could you just use an EDIS unit with a basic trigger to run it if you don't have time to build the rest of the mega jolt?

If it helps I may be able to source you a temporary distributer until yours is rebuilt? I can but ask for you, just say the word.

Thanks for the advice and suggestions guys. A local Bedford guru has a potential loaner dizzy but won't know until tomorrow.
Rich: Will check out the local dizzy but if that's a bust then will take you up on your offer. Immensely grateful.

He's going on holiday tomorrow and is back logged so couldn't look at changing a dizzy over. I've always had very good service and advice from him. Any pitfalls to look out for in disassembling a dizzy for machining?

Just checked and internet wisdom suggests an EDIS system would work but runs a fixed advance of 10 degrees without a megajolt/ squirt, might get you out of the pooh

Any pitfalls to look out for in disassembling a dizzy for machining? those types of distibutors are quite common so do you need to worry about it having the correct numbers? unless for originalitly? tell you what i'll set the advance curve free of charge. let me know what advance curve you want and i'll set it into the distibutor. i'll even give you a tour of the workshop and store if you could make it to Battle. i'm back at work next week so if your interested send me a PM

While not wielding any big spanners this week I have been busy with the sparks situation. Now we have two dizzies and some NOS points of the "when they're gone, they're gone" variety No Chinese copies these, even the waxed paper exudes quality I have a Powerspark ignition module coming so we'll build up the loaner dizzy with that and set up the NOS points and new condensor on the spare base plate just in case. We also hope to fit an electric fuel pump and re-route the fuel piping away from the exhaust manifold. This should help with starting and some of the fuel vaporisation problems. When I'm back from Goodwood I'll make a phenolic carb spacer just to help a bit more. I've also got two Goodyear G388 tyres coming so I won't have to use one of the bar treads as a spare. Putting a new tyre onto the rims will be interesting with the size of the tyre irons needed. Finally I was at a party up country last night and when you get a name for being a weirdo for fire appliances it really sticks but sometimes interesting stuff comes your way. A local firefighter sought me out and asked would I like to buy something like this? Weighs over 12 tons unladen so my C1 licence won't cut it BUT who wouldn't want a road legal 12 litre rapid response 4x4 with a foam cannon on top

Just as an aside for when you get the LPG on it i'm well and truely impressed with my BLOS carb, much better to drive than a conventional mixer system
That fire unit looks like a 'Stoly' army wading truck thing - if you squint and look sideways...

Hope it all comes together! Quick word of warning from my experience though. I bought a set of NOS Lucas points like that at a show/autojumble once, and fitted them there and then. We did about 3 miles before the follower heel bit broke and I had to change back to the ones I'd just removed while in the hard shoulder of the A1M... Whatever that material they used is, it might not age well. Its the only time I have ever had a failure like that.

It's crying out to be stripped back and converted to another transporter.... Needs a wedge shaped TVR/Lotus/Maserati on the back of it. Or an Aston Martin Lagonda in racing trim. It looks like something off a Gerry Anderson programme, I love it. Won't take long to get your LGV licence either.... Looks like the bed would be long enough to keep the foam lance on it too, it could earn it's keep as a mobile car valeting service if you carried a bit of snow foam and a hose to rinse it off afterwards.
