Well, the most important things you need to know about Cortinas are: Big straight sixes fit. In Australia they came out with the Falcon's 4.1 litre six as a factory option. Handling was generally regarded as pretty poor, even in 1970s family car terms, due to the combination of poor suspension and the weight of the big cast iron six all the way out in front. ![](http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/1/1940/3201/4849100002_large.jpg) V8s also fit! Ford or Chev small-blocks will quickly liven up a Cortina and give you exhilarating straight-line performance. ![](http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3018/2676143114_d2e33c4316.jpg) Fitting either of these engines is of course easier if you start with the Australian six-cylinder shell with the longer front end though! ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) Didn't realise that until after I posted! Oops.

Got two of them!! Both polybushed, nice difference that makes to the handling best mod done to them I think? The red one has been uprated from a 1600 to a 2.0 with a type 9 box fitted with a mk3 Capri Cross member that has been redrilled to suit and I have used the Capri gear stick too. does not need mods as it is straight and not cranked back like the Sierra one. both have ashley exhaust systems and manifolds, The red on has Burton fast road electronic Vacuumless distributor, the black one has a H&H vacuum dizzy. The red one is to be lowered 2 inch after Xmas (thanks Mum ;D) and the black one has uprated spring already fitted at standard height. Both have Mk2 Granada front spoilers and the red one has a genuine X-pack rear spoiler. Can be tail happy( unless it just me) and the 5 speed does make a huge difference in the drive. I love them!! Just waiting for the wife to finish with the black one then I can play properly!! ![](http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk224/cortina1593/blackcortinaspoiler001.jpg) ![](http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk224/cortina1593/RR09158.jpg) ![](http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk224/cortina1593/3954273344_1294ce5470_b.jpg) ![](http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk224/cortina1593/rr09305.jpg) ![](http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk224/cortina1593/cortinawork009.jpg)

Has anybody Zetec'd one? On the track they always handled better with a Xflow rather than a pinto - Zetec should be lighter than a Pinto I think? Might be quite good?
If steelies are your cup of tea, Peugeot/Citreon bolt straight on but have a bit more offset than Ford

Might be quite good? mk3's 4's and 5's handle ok even with a v8 up front once the suspension has been set up properly . they were all terrible with the stock setup as non of them were ever meant for cornering at high speed they were all soft and squidgy drop em down and stiffen them up but not to stiff and they can do corners much better than most people think i set the suspension up on my mk3 estate to handle better due to it having a v8 up front that would have otherwise made it curse word to drive the estate runs stiffer lower spring and full Polly bushing (defex bushes not pollysport as they are to stiff)and no anti roll bars

Great cars - need the poly's though - we were doing my dads' every 2yrs or so they went that frequently. we had the carousel - two tone - lovely fake wood trim etc... 2.3 Ghia model of my uncle was my fave....
Loads of potential for whatever you have in mind TBH.

If steelies are your cup of tea, Peugeot/Citreon bolt straight on but have a bit more offset than Ford Handling improvements due to lighter engines in these isnt a massive issue to be honest, they'll handle better with a heavy engine and the suspension sorted out tthan with a light engine and stock running gear. Seems a waste to me to fit a small engine into such a big engine bay, i've had LOADS of Cortinas, basically grew up with them because they were 30 quid to buy so you just bought another one when yours broke down. I had a 24v 2.9 in my last one and it was a massive improvement over any of the others i'd owned, more power is 100% better than lighter weight in this case, I was just about managing to stay in front of an Evo 7 round the bends and was fast enough that he couldn't catch up on the straights, he wasn't very happy. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v173/popuptoaster/ratty%20the%20cortina/Image389.jpg) ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v173/popuptoaster/ratty%20the%20cortina/DSCF0112.jpg)

I'm just interested in different ideas really!
What you've done to yours is cool & I remember a similar mint green cortina which was the first 2.9 24v transplant I ever saw, that was a standard 193bhp BOA & beat a Mondeo ST220 on the 1/4 mile comfortably when tested!
V8 & V6 aside, there is something to be said for the practicality / fuel consumption of a 4 pot swap as well? I've seen a few Sierras with 2.3 4 pot Scorpio conversions but not seen one in a Cortina?

seen mid to high 30's mpg in the estate its a fuel injected small block ford running a tremec TKO box pulls just 1800rpm @70mph in 5th gear you'd be lucky to get 25mpg out of a stock cortina what ever engine it came with

I had one as a first car and had one for the next 10 years, I loved them, but had to get rid of my last 2 door Taunus (German Mk5) halfway through its resto due to....... well it's a long story, suffice to say I haven't had the heart to buy another one. BUT, I will be in the market for a new commuter car around March so might have a look for one. I'll scan some pics of my old ones, and a mates 2.3 which was one of the torquiest cars i've ever driven!!
I like the idea of a Zetec engined one, but even more so one with a TDCi lump from a Mundano ST! Mmmmm, might have to look out an estate!

My 24v was averaging 30mpg, much better than i got from a 2 litre pinto, thats an average, so it includes flat out loony 3rd gear wheelspins, traffic light grand prixs, scaring mates/girlfriends/children, and raspy throttle blipping as well as sensible driving. Mine was running Vauxhall Vectra injectors and had been modded to get rid of the stal;ling issue that happens with a flywheel instead of a tourque converter, it also had an exhaust with some back pressure which helps these on economy. They are lovely road engine when set up right, enough torque to spin the rea wheels in second without trying, or pick up speed pretty fast in 5th without all that nasty gear changing the turbo boys have to suffer. retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=readersrides&action=display&thread=36179

30mpg is well impressive against what a pinto will do considering the performance hike & the same MPG as the E46 BMW 330 coupe I had as my daily until recently was doing - I want something more economical to replace it though at £1.20 a litre!
Nightmare - High 30's MPG on a V8, but single figures if you welly it, surely?
Love the idea of a TDCi powered tina, that would have huge amounts of win for a tight wad like me!
