Maybe I've got myself a mk5 crusader estate... So what do I expect as a daily driver? Speed/MPG etc? Panel availability should I need it, and reliability/mileage... And then some inspiration? Wheels? Five-speed? ![](http://www.fonejacker.tv/wp-content/uploads/terry.jpg) Talk to me. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

I had a 1980 2.0 GL estate. I had to have some work done, but it was solid and it was a good car. Check the bulkhead on the passenger side as they corrode under the battery tray, allowing water to leak into the car. Also, void bushes are a 'must check'. You're only going to get good MPG if you drive it like a saint. If you want better, then chuck in a 5 cog 'box, it was possilby the best thing I did to mine. The 1.6 ain't fast but does rev, 2.0 is full of promise with plenty of cheap bits to hop it up a tad with the option to spend big for big power too.

they aint fast, 2 litre is 100mph, 110 if your lucky, 9 or 10 seconds to 60, 25mpg ish, they don't handl that bad if all the bushes are good, more chuckable than people think if your brave, 2" lowering job, gas shocks and poly bushes all round will sort it out, rust everywhere pretty much.
fit a 24v cossie lump for millions of laughs and better mpg than a stock 2 litre.
The one and only Goony Bus, cossie YB, about 300bhp i think it was, and built to look cack.

Cheers for the input! What kinda five-speeder do they take (ford noob here!) ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Not after speed or economy hugely, more in mile-munching - regular trips to Surrey and Manchester these days ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) Mine's about ready to clock the 100K so I guess a replacement engine isn't so far away... meh.

I bought a 6 year old 1600GL estate in 1988 as a "banger" to run around in after I wrote off another car and was awaiting insurance payout. Wished I'd had one earlier as proved to be great car for me. Did a few repairs and heavilly Waxoyl'd. When I moved onto a 3.4 SII XJ6 a friend bought it off me - and still owns it ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Now has done just under 250,000 - on the original 1.6 admittedly more than a bit smokey last time it was run. great cars had few in the past and i have one at the moment as well that's currently about to be for sale once i've sorted a couple of bits on it . things that should be done to all mk3,4 or 5's is 5 speed box you would be lucky to see 20mpg from them with the old 4 speed they need polly bushing and lowering don't just cut the springs though the ride is awful on cut springs fit decent shocks while your at it as well they have a soft old ride on stock shocks. 1.6's are a little under powered 2.0's are about the best engine in standard form but all sorts of engines fit and there are lots of engine that are a much better choice than the standard engines the 1.6 has a small axle that don't take a great deal of power the bigger heavy duty axle from the 2.0 and 2.3 is a much better axle . my one : ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v333/nightmaresracing/048.jpg) ![](http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v333/nightmaresracing/051.jpg)

They are ace! I had mine for a year in my last year at Uni and went between the Wirral and Stoke loads.. It was really reliable until one month it kept cutting out and losing power - turned out it was the condensor - moral - replace all the curse word easy stuff and it'l be really reliable. Do plugs, points, condensor, leads, coil and dizzy cap. If its not got the twin choke weber carb do that upgrade (32/36dgav) and also change the oil relatively regularly as the spray bars on the camshaft have small pinholes that can block up with crud and cause the synonymous Pinto tap, I actually enlarged mine carefully with a drill bit, don't know if it was a good idea but I had no problems ;D
Also,, do the void bushes at the back ,replace them with poly bushes ait makes an unbelievable differrence to the handling!! I actually did all the bushes on the car in poly, the kit waas about £100 for everything and took me a Saturday. It was just the biggest transformation of a car Id experienced and i was runnin on standard suspension and goodyear grand prix (starsky and hutch spec rock hard squeallies! Check for rust by the bonnet hinge and in the boot around the fuel tank filler pipe

2.0, fit a 5 speed type 'box using an automatic crossmember. they drop straight in with NO mods other than cut 1.5" off the sierra gearlever otherwise it clouts the handbrake.
it'll pull 2800 rpm at 75mph...... easy cruising.
apart from that, buy the best you can and FILL it with waxoyl. then hose out the a posts as oftern as poss. in bad weather to remove the salt.

/ the 1.6 has a small axle that don't take a great deal of power the bigger heavy duty axle from the 2.0 and 2.3 is a much better axle . I don't know if the estate had different axle to saloon but when the one on my 1.6 broke (CROWNwheel bolt came undone and got caught between teeth) I changed it for a 2.0 auto axle out of a saloon. The ratio's, AFAIR, were the same and that is what's under the vehicle still. BTW if you go for standard rubber void bushes estate versions are HD (solid instead of "air gaps"). Paul H

Interesting thread, I'm partway through fixing my 1.6GL, I almost sold it but want to find out what the fuss is all about. Currently working through the bits of grot from its modest life on the road and its 6 years storage. Eeek, I do wonder why I'm doing it but should be worth it in the end even if it is a 1.6. hmm Grots in inner wings/A panel area round screens and boot floor and little nea seat bolts. Engine is sweet and low miler so not planning on changing it yet, CBA with 5 speed yet either. would like a Weber though... and plan to get it handling nice. Really like the look of Nightmares one. Nice Pattern panels seem easy to come by and these are possibly the last Classic Ford bargain, or are they if I keep spending! ![](http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff16/stoppitandtidyup/Cortina/P8211476.jpg) ![](http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff16/stoppitandtidyup/Cortina/P8211480.jpg) ![](http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff16/stoppitandtidyup/Cortina/DSCF6481.jpg)

![](http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff16/stoppitandtidyup/Avatars%20etc/reansigys.jpg) it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png)
