As some of you may know I have been thinking of modding the A35, but as the car is completely standard I have been torn between....
1: leave it standard 2: make it look standard but mod the running gear 3: go a bit mad 4: see if a cali version would work
Well a member of the A35 club pointed out that there are already alot of standard ones around, so that leaves me with option 2, 3, and 4.
Option 2 is - Morris Marina engine, Morris Minor ribbed gearbox, Kent mild road camshaft, Midget front disc brakes with servo, go from dynamo to an alternator, electronic ignition dizzy from simonbbc, repaint the car original colour, put steel wheels back on with chrome caps.
Option 3 is - all the above from option 2 (apart from paint and wheels), respray in pearlescent white paint with dark blue metal flake flames along the wings and bonnet, put on the Rostyle wheels, MR2 seats, Momo steering wheel
Option 4 is - try and make a sort of cali version of the car (imagine cali beetle, but on the A35). Pastel paint scheme, lowered, chrome hub caps, highly polished chrome on the body, whitewall tyres, chrome and wood roofrack, white steering wheel.

Someone on here had a period style racer A30 or A35 and it was well hard. Its a great look. Do it right and you can race it too.
I think the Midget engine is supposed to be an easier fit than the Marina one for some reason? I forget.

Option 2 would work for me, but you'd be better off sourcing complete Spridget running gear as the stock A35 rear axle innards aren't the strongest things out there....you might find that the torque from a tuned 1275 would prove to be a bit much for the stock halfshafts. Were it mine I'd be tempted to copy Seth's brilliant articles in recent issues of Retro Cars, and sling in a 1600 MX-5 engine/box but with a narrowed Ford back axle...then keep the outside clean and low, maybe with a few period racecar mods....

I know my great uncle had a a35 with a tuned a A series out of a sprite or somthing back in the mid 60's ... My grandad used to race him on the way to holidays in cornwall against his old 105e super ;D All the family in em, and the anglia had a canoe on the roof

If pushed I can sell you an Ital 1275 A+ (unknown conditon. Was supposed to be low (30,000) miles but should be regarded as a "core" unit for rebuilding) , engine front and rear plates, 1098 flywheel (would need redrilling to match crank) ribbed gearbox, Midget uprights, calipers, discs & hubs as well as rear backplates for hydraulic brakes plus 1098 diff and Midget halfshafts. These will all be going on eBay idc.

you enjoy owning bog standard cars of fiat manufacture equipped with stickers and halfords accessories ,,have you not thought about that as a 5th option for the A35 ;D say a fiat 1246cc engine mated to the minor gearbox,,,some stickers,,and various accessories ;D job done
in all seriousness tho,,wouldnt a 1098 morris minor engine be easier to find than a marina engine and the mods needed to mate it with the gearbox ,,even maybe look out a mg midget engine that comes with the ribbed gearbox already attached haha
imo the 4th option is the one that will make you stand out in a crowd better imo

I think option 4 - Because it's something i've not seen done before, And i think it could work quite well with the A35 body shape.
Nice and low, Steels and chrome and a nice light body colour. Need a powerplant to match aswell of course!. Reminds me of a car someone posted on here a while back - I can't for the life of me remember what it was or who posted it - Just have a vague recollection, Roof was chopped off, Baby blue lowered and had a surf board sitting on top - I think it was a spot in the cornwall/devon area - Turned out to have zetec running gear. I know this is absolutely useless info, But someone with a better memory may remember what it was and where the picture came from and post it up!

Option 5: Install a large six-cylinder engine on triple SUs, wider rear axle and front suspension, large racing slicks and flares. (Yes, I know it's an A30, but the principle still applies!)

I always thought a (maybe turbo?) mx5 engine and box would be a great way to give one of these a bit more poke... The racer look is fablong but I love the idea of a sleeper A35. Id spend hours just hanging around the local 'krooz' waiting to embarrass some chavs!
