Has anyone added weight to the back of their car (assuming it's RWD) to increase traction?
I'm driving a volvo 740 and it's dreadful in the snow, braking and steering ok but awful getting going.

RWD just point the front where you want it to go and steer with the throttle. FWD get a mate to push the handbrake button in, drill a hole through the handle/button and out the other side and put a roll pin/R clip through it so that the button is locked down. If the car slides at the front just gently apply the handbrake to bring the backend round. Need to keep the accerator gently applied too. Also learn to do a scandanavian flick, they're not just for gaining grip they scrub a lot of speed off too.
Paul try getting something to put under the rear tyres to get you off the drive.

be weary of driving in high gears and low revs, you don't want to end up with a flat battery with having the electrics on, but the battery not charging

Been out in the saab, after reading this on the UKsaabs website: locking diff!, and it works very well indeed for getting unstuck! Should in theory work with anycar where the the handbrake is on the drive wheels? ![](http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv259/RetroMat/DSCF8252.jpg) ![](http://i689.photobucket.com/albums/vv259/RetroMat/DSCF8253.jpg) I purchased some part worn snow tyres and they are awesome, you can pretty much drive as normal - well slightly slower, longer gaps and trying to avoid other muppets on the road ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png)

Well I got the DAF out. The trick seemed to be to get the momentum going. This time I warmed the car thourighly so that it didn't hessitate and built up a bit of speed on the snowless parking space. That got it through the deep stuff. Oh my word was that fun. Its a bit twitchy on the back end so I may put a fat person on the back seat and let a little pressure out of the rear tyres.
Snow tyres are only any good when
1) They come in a size that fits your car which with mine if have a choice of bridgestone BF81 or bare rims.
2) Your local tyre fitter hasn't sold out

use first when coming up to junctions ie changed down from second and let the clutch up (gently) - just means you can stay off the brakes that little bit longer!

Without grip on the front wheels, you`d get to about the 5th or 4th pic, and then keep on going straight ahead ;D mytyres.co.uk had 165\80-13`s, i don't know if thats too big for your Daf Pauldaf? ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Is it on 12" wheels or smaller?

too small in fact Rims are 135mm by 14inchs
Triumph runs 155 by 13s but thats front wheel drive and dissolves at the very sight of salt ;D

if you've got holes or spokes in your wheels you can use rope as a make shift snow chain, tie it to a spoke, run it round the tyre and in from the other side in a zig zag all round the wheel.
You HAVE to make sure theres clearance all round the rim so the rope wont catch on anything and you have to keep an eye on it, if it wears through and starts flapping about it could pull a brake line off or yank the handbrake on.
couple of bits of rope are easy to chuck in the boot though and could get you unstuck enough to save a long walk.

I fitted these to the Imp and its awesome!! ![](http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff81/gurnsimps/snowyimp3.jpg) Got caught in the heavy snow yesterday but no problem at all, even passed a 4wd vitara floundering on a steep hill in our village!! ![](http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff81/gurnsimps/impsnowy.jpg) slow and steady is the way to go although I must admit to having a play on the wide open stuff and the imp is soooo controllable with the rb1's ;D ;D
