I thought I should try the two halves together to see if they still fitted. P9230001 by teaboy911, on Flickr They did, so I started to make the new top bit. P9230002 by teaboy911, on Flickr So now you are probably expecting a picture of it all welded together but because of this rot... P9150010 by teaboy911, on Flickr ...I decided that I would be better off with a nicer condition tank as a starting point. To that end I found myself in a breakers yard near Derby rooting through a selection of oil tanks. Luckily I did find a better donor so I will be able to start all over again. My decision to discard the first attempt had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that I made a total balls-up of welding the new top on, honest.

After all that effort! Dude you have way more patience than I!
I don't suppose that breakers had a 911 cooling fan and alternator did it?

sooooo....if perhaps you were to have made a bulls up while welding, not suggesting that you did, but lets just throw it out there that you might have, what sort of bulls up would or could it have been? just curious..

Oh I did mate... I got impatient to see some progress and rushed into it without being properly prepared. I didn't prepare the metal properly and ended up with too large a gap in places which led me into burning holes and making an even bigger gap to fill. I also had too large an electrode which didn't help and I was struggling to arc up. I just did a rubbish job. All very amateur really... Hold on a minute, I am an amateur!

Well, about this oil tank..
So I made a mess of the first one
I got another tank and started again, spent quite a while bending metal, welding and fettling.
When it was done I didn't like it so I cut it off and started again...
Once more bending metal, cutting, welding and fettling.
It was a bit better this time, third time lucky perhaps, so I offered it up onto the car...
It did not fit!
Now it is all cut back off and waiting for me to summon the entusiasm to do it all over again.
Have you ever taken on a job you wish you had never started?

Have you ever taken on a job you wish you had never started? Frequently. If it was easy, we'd all be tooling around in epic cars. Keep plugging away! Good luck.

Mrs Tea has just taken me to see The Who tonight as a present for my forthcoming birthday which was nice. In car related news I have quite a list of MOT related work to do on my daily so goodness only knows when I will get this tank done.

Well, not too much I'm afraid... I am still fannying around with this oil tank job. I got hold of another tank to modify, it needed the top cutting off and the edges folding over, I made a simple tool to bend it around so as not to get too sharp a radius. Which when stuck in the vice looked like this. With the edges folded and a new top bit stuck on looked like this. Then the back half of the tank shell needed to mate up to it, so a bit more folding and welding left me with this. The black circle is where the filler neck needs to go. I decided that I really wanted to get the whole filler neck assembly fitted up to one half of the tank shell before I joined them together so I decided I needed to extend one half of the shell into the other. I made this bit. (Some of) this will need to be welded to the front half and the rear half cut back and flanged to mate up to it, not done that yet. I did get rid of the old oil fill pipe off the side, and cut a piece to fill the hole. Like this. A mate of mine gave me a scrap tank which I will cut up to use the filler neck from, as well as the dipstick and cap. It wasn't that clean when I got it, the outside was as dirty as it was inside. In this type of tank the oil comes in through the long pipe (on the left hand half) and up to the oil filter, then out of the filter through the short pipe where it falls through the gauze (on the right hand half) to de aerate, no swirl pots in these. That's as far as I am at the moment but I hope to do a bit tomorrow, if it isn't snowing.

I had a couple of hours this afternoon... I was going to fit this extension piece to the front half of the tank and shape the back half to mate up to it. But in the end I decided that it would look better if I made the extension piece wider, all the way across the top, like this, (here the new extension piece is clamped to the rear tank half). It took a bit of messing around to get it to mate up with the back half of the tank as I didn't want to make sharp corners. If I get the chance tomorrow I will trim it to size and get it joined to the front part of the tank. Next job after that will be to prepare for the filler neck. I will be glad when this tank is done and I can move onto something else.

When I looked at that last picture I posted I thought that something about it didn't look quite right. When I shaped the top of the rear half of the tank to fit the extension piece it had become distorted. I did a trial fit of the two halves I saw this... As you can see, the rear half has curved leaving a bit of a gap. It also pulled it out of line along the edge too... I did a fair bit of head scratching, thinking about how I was going to fix this but in the end it was just a quick bash with a hammer on a 'T' dollie and it was back looking something like. I started to weld the new extension piece on. I did the top part of it first then tidied it up a bit, then bent it over and welded the rest. I had tried tig welding the tank, but whilst I ended up with a reasonable looking finish on the side I was working from, the other side was all covered in horrible snotters. I don't know why it did this but probably because it needed to be purged. As I don't have anything to do that with I thought I would have a go with the mig instead. That is not brilliant either... I tried it with both pure argon and with 5% CO2 mix. The CO2 mix worked better but not perfectly. It doesn't really flow as well as mild steel and it gives off loads of spatter, which sticks on like s**t to a blanket. Anyway, it should be ok when I have cleaned the welds up. Hope the two halves still fit togather after all this.

Great to see work continuing on this Mr Tea!
But what an epic saga your oil tank is turning into! (That's tank number three you're on now...?!)
Keep at it though, you know it's going to be worth it!

Yes mate, I think it is the second attempt at tank three. It has been a total b###ache. Getting there now, I think.

All on a part that is probably never going to be seen, but then I guess you'll know it's there..... I can't help myself Bstardo. I asked Mrs Tea what she thought about fitting the full length top extension or the short one, she said, 'just do the minimum you need to get it done'. I can't do that... She thinks I have OCD, and numerous other mental disorders...

I was hoping to have made some proper progress on the tank this weekend but I did my back in at work last week. Here is what the outer shell of the tank looks like at the moment. I think that the next job will be to weld a few tabs around the edges of the tank halves so that I can self tapper them together to trial fit as it is a total b***ache offering it up into place with mouldy grips hanging off it. Hopefully I will make a start on that when I can walk properly again.
