Anyone got any ideas? Need some tips on preservation of Patina. Its for an early 50s raleigh lenton bike frame but obviously any tips here could be transferred to any steel. Inc cars The frame is a bit... well..... Worn. And I'm looking to keep it that way. Its lived its life and its story is the way it looks now. I was thinking just clean it all down with panelwipe and then laquer over the rust and crust. But I can see problems with that. I.e would the rust continue to grow under the clear? And bubble up through it? And for other parts like the headset and chainring I was thinking some kind of wax? But what? I don't want to cover it in oil or grease as id like to ride it... And ruining a pair of jeans just aint on ;D Obviously as I said... Could be applied to any fresh arizona desert find..... If you like the "had a hard life" look

In this case its easy as that's a fibreglass car. No rust problems with that "Patina". Next shot down is same car. Buick in bottom pic is preserved by living in a dry, rust free environment and the BMW will probably just get scrapped when it rots through? In fact wasn't that the whole story with that one? Anyway, back to the question. What you (apparently) want is Anchor Wax which is a very resistant wax polish which has a matt finish. Never used it myself but its what may of the patina lovers use.

Yeah, I heard of that anchor wax too. Anybody used it? Is it really a maritime product?

Just keep it clean and allow its history to continue naturally rather than stopping the story abruptly?
Other than that.. I've heard good things about Ankor wax too.

'Ankor Wax'... Whether they spell it like that to get around a previously patented product or not I don't know, but this is the stuff. www.morrislubricantsonline.co.uk/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=92I've always got a five litre tin somewhere and my last one cost £13 from a local farm supplies place that had priced it wrong. WICKED. It's good stuff and easy to dawb on with a brush, that's the only way I've ever used it. It leaves a waxy film that if you stick your fingers in will leave prints, so covering a whole shell in the stuff isn't such a delight... I guess spraying it may give a finer finish. I use it on random metal stuff that I'm likely to ignore for a while, then use truck wash to blast it off. No complaints here and I'd recommend it

I havent tried that but it sounds like it leave a greasy film that will attract dirt, I once completely sprayed a camper body with clear woxoyl which never completely dried & attracted a lot of dirt which couldnt be washed off, looked interesting and preserved it whilst I used it over winter but probably not the look you are wanting!

I use clear waxoyl. Just dab it on a rag and rub it in works perfect. I'm sure Waxoyl is very much the same stuff, it certainly looks it. This reminds me, I used Ankor Wax like this on a bare metal milk churn last summer. It's still not got any surface rust on it, despite being sat outside since as it's our post box.

Ankor wax, put it on with a rag like polish, a very thin film then it drys and seals the steel. Waxoil stays soft.
Could use clear POR15 from frost, it's a clear laquer that stops rust. I think rusty the 5 series BMW was done with it, can't find and pics of it at the mo, the one that's always on stanceworks, the one with the roof chop that was a minter in black until something fell on the A pillar and crushed it.

Just noticed you'd posted a pic of rusty. So yeah, that one lol.
POR15 does darken the rust quite a bit. Kinda gives it a wet look.

I could be wrong, but I'm sure someone suggested using Diesel to me at one point. Apply with a cloth, buff excess off. Leaves the metal and rust just as you want it but darker, like the POR15 Cairyhunt mentions.
I'd be more curious to know whether or not the Diesel suggestion is an urban myth, having never tried it myself.

Friend of mine used surf board wax on his splitty!!
Was a hard block of wax so was bloody hard work! Rub the block on then buff off the excess, but worked a treat ;D
Don't see why candly wax wouldn't work equally as well.
