JANUARY 2010
This is the third event being organised by The Valletta Grand Prix Foundation (VGPF) at UNESCO’s World Heritage City of Valletta and is taking place during the month of May 2011. This annual Historic Classic Car Event is the only one of its kind staged entirely around Valletta’s ring road.
In 2009 and in a matter of six weeks the VGPF was formed, board members elected and a date for its first event was set. It attracted 50 enthusiastic Maltese participants, as well as a few well known foreign guest drivers and a foreign Race Director. The organised 2-day Sprint Event of approximately 1 Km was a complete success.
The 2010 event was extended to include a 5-day pre main event programme which commenced on the evening of Monday 3rd May with a welcome reception for all participants. Between Tuesday 4th and Friday 7th May, a host of activities were held and included wine tasting, a day trip to sister island - Gozo, Scrutinieering and Sprint Runs on a Quarter Mile Drag Strip, a visit to Malta's Old Capital City - Mdina and more. Friday afternoon saw the Concours d'Elegance being held at Valletta's popular Waterfront Cruise Liner Terminal. Many exhibits in pristine condition were on display. Four International judges from the UK and US awarded the points and placings for 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The main event programme started with timed practice runs on the Saturday morning and official sprint timings for the Valletta Grand Prix Shield were held in the afternoon. Demonstration runs over a 4.2 Km circuit and other car show activities were held throughout the day on Sunday. Over the weekend various local motoring clubs in collaboration with VGPF and Malta's Old Motors Club, participated in static car exhibitions and paraded through the circuit at the end of each day’s programme.
The VGPF has an exclusive agreement to run the Valletta Historic Classic Car Event for a number of years. With the support of the Valletta Local Council, Floriana Local Council, Parliamentary Secretariat for Tourism, the Environment and Culture, Malta Tourist Authority, Parliamentary Secretariat for Youth and Sport, Malta Sports Council (KMS), VISET, together with the collaboration of Old Motors Club (OMC), Island Car Club (ICC), Malta Motorsport Federation (MMF), Malta Drag Racing Association (MDRA) and our 2010 Corporate Sponsors – Malta Tourist Authority, Kunsill Malta ghall-iSport (KMS), HSBC Bank Malta plc – Concours d’Elegance Partners, BMW Group Malta and Muscats Motors Ltd. – 2010 Pace-car Partners, Seasus – Technology Partners, Vodafone Malta Ltd. – Communications Partners, GasanMamo Insurance, Quintessentially Jaguar, 202 Jewellery, Mdina Glass, Salvox, Banif Bank Malta, Attard Services - Shell, Marsovin Winery and Blokrete, we are pleased to confirm that the 2010 was a complete success.
The Valletta Grand Prix is an important element in Malta’s 2011 calendar of events. It not only attracts local aficionados, but is an attraction to foreign motoring enthusiasts and tourists alike. It creates a new niche market associated with prestigious European Motorsport activities. Today the Valletta GP Event is listed on International Motoring Calendar of Events. Its setting has been described as the Monaco of the Southern Med.
The 2010 event attracted a mix of over 70 local and foreign participants. From the encouraging response and interest received so far from foreign and local individuals and clubs, the VGPF envisages that participation for this year’s event will increase to a 100 cars. The maximum number of cars being accepted is 120.
The 2011 programme is in its final stages of preparation and will be uploaded onto this website soon. The 5 day pre main event programme will commence on the evening of Monday 16th May 2011 with a reception for all the participants. From Tuesday 17th to Friday 20th May we shall be organising a series of pre main event activities, which will incorporate various runs across Malta and Gozo, visiting historic sites and touristic venues. The climax to these activities will be the Concours d’Elegance that will be held on Friday 20th May in Valletta. The main programme will be held on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd May, 2011 with timed sprint runs on Saturday and full circuit untimed demonstration runs on Sunday.
The programme may alter closer to the day depending on circumstances beyond the organiser’s control. Such changes will be notified and communicated via email and through this website. The website is regularly updated with Latest News updates on a regular basis.
