sorry for a fairly boring thread but I'm looking at this on saturday... cgi.ebay.co.uk/1993-FORD-SIERRA-SAPPHIRE-COSWORTH-REP-NO-SWAP-PX-/180629026774?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item2a0e5437d6![](http://i.ebayimg.com/20/!CE0MI7Q!2k~$(KGrHqYOKkYE0++75R+hBNTF+4REt!~~_12.JPG) its a 1.6CVH and although ive read a lot about the driftage and ive driven a few, as dull as it sounds I was wondering if they are reliable?! ive owned a lot of cars but no fords yet, and the ones I know are, well, fordy...so I'm a bit unsure! have some pics to liven things up! ps...please don't go and buy it id cry lol ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) pps...i know the 1.6 isnt grunty enough for drifting, I just want the car as a daily with potential... ![](http://www.driftingstreet.com/images/ford-sierra.jpg) ![](http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3277/2800209389_73106109ed.jpg) ![](http://thacko.files.wordpress.com/2010/08/img_15251.png?w=497&h=332)

Ive had quite a few sierras although never bothered with the 1.6 or 1.8, some never gave me any grief and some were a bloody nightmare, you need to have a really good look at it and make sure everything works and the car looks like its had a good life, don't be swayed by a set of flash wheels, theres enough around still at cheap enough prices you don't have to buy a ropey one.

cool thankyou! well i saw the guy had a few mk2 escorts and that in the background so assuming hes a ford buff, I'm only really going as its local, the kit etc may even be sold on, not really my cup of tea, replicas just get raced and thats how all the saxo-chavs get their 'i just beat a cossie' stories haha ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Why wouldn't it be reliable?, as long as it's been looked after then there no reason for it to last years, You could have a 4 year old Focus that's unreliable.
I can never understand questions like this.
Anyway more to the point I had a old E plate 1.6 Sierra about 9 years ago and it was a great car and never had a problem with it but that one you've posted looks like bit of a dog to me though, I'd steer clear.
There's still plenty of cheap Sierra's about if you look hard enough.

Mmm, Cossie lattices and spoiler on a 1.6cvh usually means it's had the life ragged out of it already.
I just bought a bog stock low miles 1.8cvh and it's lovely. Not a spot of bother at all (touch wood).

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Had 2 Sierras at the same time (both estates ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) ), one petrol, one TD. The petrol one was a genuine old bus, nothing flash just solid and reliable. Worked well as a parts-getter for about a year. TD looked same condition, decent economy, higher spec, we bought it with about 10 month MOT so we didn't bother checking much as it drove fine. Finally got it up on ramps to pre-MOT it ![:'(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cry.png) Missing inner sills were the main problem but there were others ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) Put them side-by-side and there was very little to show one was a great base, the other was rotten underneath. ps. Estates Rule! ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) We used to carry the box-trailer in the boot rather than tow it empty ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) ;D ;D pps. There's still a box of spares for it in the garage, shout up if anyone needs hubs, turbo + bits, starter, etc. Joblot for minimum beertokens ![](http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh36/Nomad_Geordie/DSC00247_cut.jpg)

valve stem seals are a common issue on these, my 1.8lx sapphire on a h reg was a great car other than the white smoke it used to kick out when cold due to the valve stem seals being worn. The 1,8 was quite good fun to drive as well and could be made to go sideways with a little encouragment and clutch dipping ;-) . wow i miss that car .

they're good cars, nothing amazing (i still love them though), but they're crude and simple which makes them easy to deal with. lots of parts interchangibility (typicl ford) makes better engines, brakes etc fairly easy to achieve

I've had 3 IMO they are great cars, reliable, hard wearing, cheap and easy to fix.
The main thing to look for is rust, check the sills. Paying extra attention to the inner sill near the rear sub frame mount. Early ones are meant to rot on the transmission tunnel where it meets the bulkhead (non of mine did but worth a look). But check everywhere!
As for the engine the CVH isn't that bad really, although the service interval for the cambelt is very short so if there is no record of it being changed in the last 20,000 miles I'd do it straight away. Valve stem seal are also a common problem, but is not teminal as long as oil levels are checked often.
If the car clunks under braking it's probably due to the ARB to TCA bush, mega common problem that they suffered from when new! Dead easy to replace and heavy duty or poly bush versions are cheap and easily avaliable (if it's not been done already!).
Other than that you can't go wrong, the transmission is tough.
If you want a daily with potential the Sierra is an excellent choice, lots of interchangeability from models and great aftermarket support too.

Sierra - here we go again! He has an illness, it's not his fault.

I've had 5 of them, and the biggest problem you'll encounter is rust. I'd advise you to go for the 2.0DOHC engine. It's got loads of torque, and I regularly got over 40mpg on a trip without actually trying. Even a 2 litre Pinto gave me the right side of 35mpg. As for reliability, with regular maintenance, they're pretty much faultless.

I've had a good few Sierra's now, Only ones that gave me issues were those fitted with the DOHC engine. CVH's are underated, mainly because they don't do skids very well.
But there are pleanty around and still some very tidy smaller engined ones going for little money

There's a tidy looking white one with petty low miles on autotrader, standard and cheap, might be worth a look mate?

thanks for the advice people, I'm going for a peek on saturday! not got great hopes, and got a few other cars lined up, its just i tend to know a little more about most than i did with sierras!
and trigger, i know all cars are inherantly reliable if well looked after, i wasn't having a dig at fords, its just ive driven J for a good while now, and through all winds, weathers, lack of attention ive never even had the slightest problem, whereas people i know with fords havent had the same luck, so was just after a bit of general knowledge!
other options are another micra and a rover 220gti atm...

I had a 1.6 once.
It was the worst car i've ever owned.
On the other hand i've had about 5 different 2.0 ones, all absolutely great ;D
