I'm getting near to a point where it would be wrong to bolt the engine in and check out how it drives To do that, I need the engine mounting plate. The engine sits lower then the main chassis, so I had the joy of bending the 6mm plate. But it's bent and welded in now - she's getting HEAVY (the hole is for the sump plug) Now every test drive should be concluded with the safe stoppage of the vehicle; so brakes. I got me a proper racing kart brake, clever little caliper really, adjustable width, pads bolt in, nice flat side for mounting. She sits in the middle of the axle between the 2 bearing plates, which is an ideal place to mount the caliper, can't see it moving anywhere. I can't drill from the side of the caliper, so I made up a lil template so I could transfer the markings to the side I can actually get a drill into A few moments later and I could mount the caliper, look at that, perfect Well, no. As much as I like sitting on small pointy objects, I best turn that hydraulic stuff around. There - Perfect! Stay tuned for the next exciting installment which should involve mounting the engine and doing something steering related so I don't just stuff it into a random car

I expect it's restricted for rpm, it will make it's power low down anyways
Give it a service?
Make sure you're in the appropriate gear?
I've used an 8hp tractor to pull a disabled van about the yard, they have a hell of a lot of ooooomph

Excellent work, looks smaller than I was picturing it. Are you copying usual cart steering geometry that lifts the outside rear wheel to aid turning? I’ve copied the geo from the Gillard chassis I had Think the angles are pretty subtle. The steering arms have mad angles built in to them as you can see, no idea why, must aid in something 😂

I'll probably sit a few inches further back, but its toight!
Feels proper sketchy just sat on it, let alone when it's moving. I'm glad the seat will have a back

You've managed to line up the brake disc with the drive sprocket on the engine - So combined driven sprocket and brake disc would be awesome That brake disc is going in the middle of the axle, that brake disc is also stuck there very firmly so will need some persuasion to alter it's position

Grabbed an hour today, cut a few bits Then welded them together. Despite clamping and all that it's tweeked a lil bit, so i'll have to get a bit medieval on it before I weld the rest in

Yeah, she's going to have some heft to her
The CAD worked it all out and the frame is around 12kg iirc.
The quad the engine came from was around 100kg wet, I read a racing go kart is about 65-75kg.
More weight means more stability right?
I went for the 6mm plate as due to space constraints the bearings have to be close together rather than at each end of the axle, so it should help stop any twisting. No doubt overkill, but hey

Grabbed an hour at lunch - working from home has many benefits Pulled out the trusty Evolution saw, serioulsly if you cut metal and don't have one of these, go make a buy This gave me 2 plates with perfect straight cuts I then marked them up and pulled out the hole saw. No pics of that, i'm good but i'm not take a pic whilst marking up or struggling with a holesaw good Bit more marking up as per the diagram and attacked with the grinder. The edges want a flat back, but that's the first plate ready for the bearing mounts being drilled I think it will come together pretty quickly, another hour or so should have these 2 plates finished and finessed, then the box work should be dead easy to cut as I have the sizes all written down for me and the angles of the ends etc. I'll try and get out again tomorrow

Another £100 gets me 15m of 20x20x2 box and 1.5m of 200x6mm flat bar Ian also came up trumps with the cut list and build diagram, so we can expect me to actually make a start on things now

It's more they don't really cut through tucked up 2 inch pipe that well, rather than the noise. They don't seem to care too much about that...
Oh, and as mentioned, they're not powerful and you can't lean on them without stalling

Cool CAD work! I like how this looks. Amazing isn't it Handy having an engineer across the street. He's also building something awesome, i'll be sure to add his here as well. Oh, as a bonus, the cad program will disect the model and give me a cut list including angles and all that jazz (granted, my angles appear to be 90)

We did a little more measuring of things and in fact stuffs and this is now the 'final' rendering. We've moved the body up a little to match both the real Scamp and to give more ground clearance. The engine has been dropped to accomodate this. We've used large plates at the rear now to hold the bearings and tie in with the engine mounts at the rear. The front end has been adjusted to make it more true to scale and the front tyres have been enlarged. The modelling shows 30 degrees of steering angle, but that's with square edged tyres, in real life they're rounded so I might gain another degree or 2. Anyways, pics It's all 20x20x2 box, with 200x6mm plate at the back. This will be clad in 2mm ally plate She's going to be a weighty, sturdy little beast

Quad chassis is currently taking up space in my garden. I've stolen the steering column, but the rest is all good
