Very interesting I hope more guys contribute. Most of us have no idea really what goes on out there. I almost went to The Antarctic a long time ago, would have been a civilian military type role, it my wife at the time said no. Still regret it. I got asked to go to Alaska a few times but always turned it down, I don't like the cold but I bet it would have been a proper adventure. The sampling process makes no sense and any decent company would know this, regardless of there being no content in the majority of the car, it is unlikley to deteriorate and become porous (apart from the brake shoes which probably have asbestos content).

That's a canny bruise, I was speaking to bloke at work who had had a kidney transplant, I didnt know they leave the original in place!
With your improvement in health that can only raise your driving level for next year, will you be staying in the same TA class?

I used to work for PGS that operate the Ramform class of boats, I mainly worked onshore on seismic surveys with dynamite or vibes, despised offshore work, a year off the coast of Malaysia was more than enough. I never fancied deep seismic. I preferred our more varied work on the multirole ships. Used to do a lot of single streamer, sonar, analogue, gradiometer and sampling work for shallow gas, cable routes, UXO, geotechnical, environmental,camera work, ROV, sediment sampling, real varied work worldwide. Enjoyed it immensely till it went belly up and things got too tough. Aye, it was a proper pisser it went down the pan, I went from having 5 operating countries in the eastern hemisphere to shutting down and moving to Brazil and having to learn Portuguese. I spent the last year working in Brazil and a few months back I packed it in to work back in the UK and keep the wife happy, never had a spare moment to work on any projects since getting back here. Multirole ship work sounds interesting whereas the offshore surveys we did were mind numbingly boring and I could never sleep with 12+ guns firing off the back deck all night. Much preferred the curse word holes of Africa and the Middle East, every day was an adventure.

Just had a look through your conversion threads, work looks outstanding. I've fancied a VW Transporter conversion for a while but they are daft prices for something no better than Ford Transit. What would a conversion like this cost on something like a Vivaro/ Transit?

Yes to more pickups! Shame your first experience with it was a touch catastrophic. I remember selling a VW Beetle which had a linkage issue in that occasionally with the right(wrong) circumstances it would pop out, I told the chap about it. Less than twenty minutes from my place it did that, but worse it trapped the spring in it which made it really hard to pop back into place, I think he was seriously considering telling me to keep the car when I turned up and fixed it. I'm guessing you had similar thoughts? I was disappointed more than anything as I missed the good weather and show season, the recovery cost and then the cost of the parts, labour etc quickly mount up but hey ho, atleast I know its done and done properly. I've been fannying about with cars long enough to know its never straightforward and whatever you think its going to cost you might as well double it. The car has a bit of a story behind it, the previous owner was a painter for Rolls Royce and rebuilt this in his spare time at work, the paint and finish is immaculate. If the weather ever dries up over the weekend I'll get some decent pictures up before I begin to take bits off for polishing/ plating

I do like a Caddy (although mine was a mk 2), there's plenty of helpful info and advice (and witty banter) over on the Caddy forum www.vwcaddy.comI'm on the caddy forum, just need to find the time to have a proper look about. I got a few parts this weekend which I'll fit at some point this week then I have a load of little bits to take off and send for nickel plating.

I havent been on here for years, when I last had a couple of Sunbeam Lotus'. I had always been looking for another and almost bought one from Bristol but couldnt justify 20k for something that will sit in the garage 95% of the time. I'd always liked Caddy's so decided to have a look for one, ovver about 12 months there was a couple that were in the condition I wanted but they were usually sold before I got there or I was working, then one night this one popped up on ebay and I managed to get in early and arrange to get down the following day to pick it up. It didnt get far, literally 8 miles down the road before it cut out and wouldnt run again so it got transported the 240 miles back to Newcastle which wasnt cheap. I did abit of fiddling and came the conclusion that newly refurbed injector pump had curse word itself, so got it transported off to a fuel specialist The tank was full of metal shards and some sort of algae growth which the pump has picked up and basically ate itself. So the pump got rebuilt, again, as well as the injectors being reconditioned. I took the tank away to get opened up, blasted and coated, like new. About 6 weeks after buying the thing it was finally ready and running well, quite surprised at how well an old 1.6 donkey engine with no turbo can go. Got it home, gave it a wash then put it away as I've completely missed show season. Waiting for a few bits and pieces from VW Heritage and I have a few plans for it keep me busy over winter.

Bloke in the unit round the corner has an estate version in the same color, lovely cars. He also has a 635 and has just taken in an immaculate E30 M3 for detailing

great news about the car and the body, regards Water Meth, I'm not sure on the Time Attack rules, but the Blue Book says we cant use it in our sport. They allow nitrous so I don't see meths being a problem
