Ah okay I did chat with your brother a fair bit haha, I feel like we should have forum name badges sometimes lol, will you be going to the Weekender at Goodwood next may? I believe its the weekend of my wedding Anniversary so it could swing either way! If I do go I should be in the Polo. Tom

Beautiful tidy Polo.
I recognise it from the Polo pages on Facebook and Instagram.

So until recently I hadn't really done much with the little Polo, just used it and enjoyed it really: 20180505_183834 by Tom Horn, on Flickr 20180416_162926 by Tom Horn, on Flickr 20180416_072051 by Tom Horn, on Flickr 20180506_133354 by Tom Horn, on Flickr 20180506_135212 by Tom Horn, on Flickr 20180711_192838 by Tom Horn, on Flickr The one thing that has bugged me and stopped me from using it more, especially to go on longer journeys, was a knock seemingly coming from the bottom end. I didn't want to end up stranded on the side of the road with a rod through the block. So I set out to find a replacement engine and gearbox (might as well upgrade to 5 spd at the same time). Now you think finding a 1.3 Polo or 1.4 mk3 Golf (ABD) engine wouldn't be a massive deal. Well it turned into one! 3 times I got let down. Twice even being at the point where I was about to leave the house to go and collect! Then through a random chat on instagram I ended up at a house 3 miles from mine! 20180722_180941 by Tom Horn, on Flickr and met a guy called Gordon with an incredibly tidy late Polo Coupe and more importantly a 1.3 5 Speed Polo which he has massive plans for. The engine and gearbox do not play a part in those plans, so we came to a deal and I bought the 1.3 5 Speed and a sports exhaust. So a couple of days later I went around to Gordon’s and removed an engine and gearbox for the 1st time ever, by myself! IMG_20180724_184007_748 by Tom Horn, on Flickr My brother in law then gave me a hand shifting it home. I then replaced the headgasket, water pump and timing belt (again all firsts for me) as I thought it would never be as easy again. Then last weekend with the help from a good mate we stuck it in. Sorry no pics as we were just working flat out, here it is fitted. Looking almost exactly the same as the 1.05 20180825_144221 by Tom Horn, on Flickr Set the timing up and then it drove! 20180828_123705 by Tom Horn, on Flickr Turns out lambda sensor wiring has snapped inside the sensor, so I’m awaiting a new sensor and then hopefully it’ll run 100% So I’m very very pleased with the progress and myself! I’m now planning on using it even more! As well as a lot of use the bodywork is starting to look a little tired again and there’s also some welding that needs to be done, so that will be the next challenge for myself! Tom

Focus on the Structural stuff first and then get it on the road. Enthusiasm stays higher if you can get out and drive it I find.

Love it. That interior is epic.
The Federal spec bumpers would look great tucked closer to the body, but that might defeat the point.

Very enjoyable updates. The Rover just continues to get better and better. Excellent work on both the arch repair and the interior refresh.

Rover SD1 with a BMW M52 2.8, a vague family relation and I think would suit the car well. Tom The M52 or even the M57D30 would both be pretty smart fitment in an SD1, particularly with a 6 speed ZF box behind them. I agree! I like the idea of a Powerful Straight 6 instead of a V8 as well.

Hi Tom. Sorry the pictures aren't loading on my phone (slow Internet here in rural France!) But where do your parents live? I am living not far from oradour s glane, so may be near to them. I visited the town once, personally I found it a really harrowing experience. Especially going into the church. The bullet holes in a pram was one image that stuck with me. They've moved to L'isle Jourdain which is about 55km North West of Oradour Sur Glane. It was quite harrowing, especially the church. I also found the underground part at the memorial with all the peoples personal possesions incredibly touching.

Clean Cinqs seem to have all but disappeared! I had a rough Sporting a few years back as a stop gap and it was an absolute hoot to drive!

Excellent progress. I think if I ever have to buy a more modern daily instead of the Polo I'll get one of these. My Mam had one for a while and I was really impressed how much of a laugh it was even her ropey standard example.

If 10% of the idea's in this thread got built.......!
My current thoughts:
Rover SD1 with a BMW M52 2.8, a vague family relation and I think would suit the car well.
Saab Turbo powered Omega, the engine and cars can be picked up so cheap!
Vauxhall Agila (the Wagon R ones) with a X18XE from a Corsa SRI. Apparently the 1.2 Agila's don't use Suzuki engines they use Vauxhall so in theory it should be "straight forward".
