Getting me in the mood for going to watch it at Croft!
I would say to anyone, if you haven't been to watch it before, get yourself to a meeting. Its brilliant!

Challenge for you then, Find a cool looking Leyland Sherpa. I know it goes against the grain of this thread but I've yet to see anything other than a straight forward restoration that looks good. I'd be pleased to be proven wrong. Boom! Well done rmad Where did you find it? Need more info 😂

I'm not a fan of loads of Camber. But I really like the look of that!! As above! Its awesome that you're building this. Something nice and different and sure to upset the purists which in my opinion is the best bit Tom

Excellent and inspirational work! I like your approach of trying not to get too wrapped up in getting everything done, so that you can get onto the more important issue of getting out and about in it!

I have always been obsessed. My first word was Car-car and I supposedly knew my parents friends by their cars not by their names! Its always been a bit of a mystery where it came from because my dad is completely unbothered by cars, they are literally just transport to him!
One of my cousins is into his cars and I credit him with developing my obsession further. He used to give me Fast Ford Mags when I was a kid.
Although I don't have any kids and don't plan on having any, I am actively encouraging my 3 Year old Nephews love of cars. Who know's what we'll be able to build together in 14 or so years time!

The Cortina was supposed to be my big project. The one I would have forever etc. However it became a bit of a millstone. So although I miss the idea of it, I don't miss actually having it. My plans for it were extensive. New front subframe with adjustabe front suspension arms, uprated brakes and 4x100 Hubs Rear IRS from an MX5 2.3 16v i4 with RS2000 head and Kent Reground Cams, ITBs and aftermarket management. (Hoping for 200hp) 6 speed RX8 Gearbox. Bodywork wise very clean and tidy, standard colours, subtely wider arches ( scaryoldcortina had a cunning plan for that). Mk4 Grill. Rota RKR 15x8 front and 15x9 rear with chunky tyres. Interior would be Recaro's trimmed in black leather with centre panels in standard grey Carousel Cloth. I would never have got it done! The Polo.20180220_155204 by Tom Horn, on Flickr Full body resto, new rear panel, boot floor, both rear quarters and sills, doors and front slam panel. Respray in Tornado Red, Coupe S Arch trims and skirts Gaz Coilovers, PPP Stage 2 Subframe, Polybush everything. GT/G40 Rear beam with custom ARB. 256mm front brakes, Polo GTI rear Disks, 22mm Master Cylinder Staggered 14x7 and 8 RSL Cults. High Compression Hybrid 1.6 AFH on ITBS with Schrick Cams. 8p Gearbox with LSD and short shift. Interior, much the same as Cortina, Recaro's retrimmed in black leather and original Fox material centres, Audioscape Doorpods and decent speakers. Hopefully the Polo will get a pared-down version of the above over time. Tom

Today I did a longer journey at higher speeds and when I got home I felt confident enough in the car's abilities that I didn't even open the bonnet to check "just in case". That's a milestone in old car dailying as far as I'm concerned. I had a weird almost-nostalgia moment too because today felt like the good days I had when I was dailying the car a few years ago. It's put me in a right good mood. I strongly identify with both parts of that post! The moment you can just use your retro as a daily without really worrying or having to think about it too much is an excellent feeling. I also get so much enjoyment out of using a car that I have put so much effort into. Its very satisfying.

Just looking at the picture where you parked on the roadside...How on earth did you get that car in there?.....push it sideways! JP I was at the jct for the roundabout so had to do a kind of 3 point turn and then shove it backwards up the kerb. All with an unhelpful truck driver making uncomplimentary gestures haha.

Love it! Use to have a few breadies/saloons in the past. My first car was a Gt, and then had two G40's after that. Never had a coupe though, how do you find driving it in modern traffic? It looks awesome! How is the paint holding up? I always wondered what it was like to keep clean. I tried it once but the dirt just got ingrained, but I think I used the wrong one as it came out really matte/orange peeley and not smooth. I've had 7 Polo's and this is the worst I've had! The paint is quite Satin and has an weird not at all smooth finish. Seems to hild up quite well though, although it ja desperate for a clean. It holds up quite well. I mean its really slow but apart from that is does everything I need.

Personally I like the Dacia Sandero. Failing all that could you not just lob a set of Clio wheels on one and whack it with a lowering stick? 👍🏻 I can see one in my future at some stage. I'm with you on this! One of the little 0.9 turbo ones appeal to me!

glad its getting better... does the fuel system hold a good vacuum?...any leaks anywhere that might let air in?.....My Dodge truck seems to be fixing itself too lately as Ive had an evap code coming up that I have been trying to trace....the light has been off now the last few days...and I have a fresh inspection sticker (MOT) so I can take my time tracing it. It also does not leave me stranded anywhere... I checked all hose ends and added some fresh clamps on suspected fittings.....maybe I fixed it....maybe not?... JP I think it holds good vacuum. I'm going to give the whole system a good check over, unfortunately I'm on decorating duty this weekend so probably won't get a chance. Will have to wait until weekend after.

Is the tank clean inside?....do you run an inline fuel filter too? Does the fuel filler cap "breathe" properly? JP Last time I had the lift pump out it looked pretty clean, but I'll check it this time as well. There is a filter after the main fuel pump which I changed at the same time I changed the pump. It does seem to be getting gradually better. I'm windering if its just little foibles from basically sitting unused for 18months.

So Polo has been in daily use. All was going well until last Friday: 20180223_125312 by Tom Horn, on Flickr Felt a lot like running out of fuel......but I had only done 138 miles on £30.......hmmm thats not a lot. Funnily though, when I filled it with fuel it worked.....some investigation revealed that the overflow pipe had not been reattached by whoever had installed the tank, so it was all slosing out. Oh thats fine....I'll just poke this silicone out of the hole...... 20180225_145148 by Tom Horn, on Flickr BUMHATSNothing sometime with the weldy stick won't fix, but not in this weather. So I reattached the overflow pipe. Seems to be fine(ish)* and I have been using it in the great weather we're having up here! 20180227_210913 by Tom Horn, on Flickr 20180227_064447 by Tom Horn, on Flickr 20180228_065815 by Tom Horn, on Flickr *although it does seem to be running pretty well, it has done this weird thing a couple of times where it seems to act as if its being starved of fuel. I've already replaced the main pump, so I have bought another lift pump. Tom

I was with Admiral fot my daily and they were fine, even when I made a claim.
With HIC now for the Polo as they were the cheapest when I rang around.
