I also find that having the photos helps in given boost. When you start to think that you’re not getting very far. You can go back through the pictures, and then you actually see just how much you have achieved.

We brought a little Aygo for my better half as a runaround. I have to say that I’m very impressed with it. It’s free to Tax cheep to insure and just sailed through the MOT. Its also fun to drive, with that 3 cylinder thrumming away. And You can actually work on the car and do your own servicing your self. It is even telling you that you can in the owners manual.

I knew this would be a hard job, but I didn’t think it would take me three weeks to do. So I had to finish off the inner structure. I made up a couple of repair patches. I just hammered some small bits into shape. Using a hammer and a socket in the vice. And then weld them into place. Then it’s onto the door skin. After a bit of trimming it’s tacked into place. Once happy with it I fully weld it in. Next onto the second half of the door skin. First tacked, then fully welded. After that it’s a case of dressing the welds and tidying up. Putting the door back on the Austin and it’s not to bad. But there’s room for improvement. So I will do some more tweaking. And hopefully get it looking right. The other door should be a bit easier as the main structure is in better condition. I wish the repair panel was in one piece instead of two. Having a joint right where there’s a crease in the panel makes life difficult.

I can confirm that a XF seat is one of the most comfortable things you can sit on. I regularly drive across Europe in mine. Also I have a seat at work that’s out of an old SAAB 99 and that’s really comfortable. In fact so comfortable I sometimes fall asleep in it on my dinner break.

Well I was going to go out for a bike ride with my better half. But the weather put a stop to that. So after doing some housework,I spent some time in the garage. Carrying on from yesterday I started with this part. Which I cut out a small section and welded in a new piece. I forgot got to take as many pictures today, but the next bit was the corner section. Which has a curved shape in three ways. This took some time with a hammer to get it in to shape. Plus it needed a lip for the new outer skin to attach to. And eventually I managed to get it into the correct position. I used the new door skin as a guide. And this is how the front is looking now. Getting there slowly but getting there. The next bit along feels solid but is quite frilly. Especially after going over it with a wire wheel in the grinder. I might have to get hold of some more metal. At the moment I have been using up the left over pieces of repair panels. That’s it for this weekend.

DPF’s are giving us all sorts of problems with are work vehicles. We have some Rangers and Hilux, as well as some Vauxhall vans. They are always trying to do a regen. The fleet of old Land Rovers we have are actually the most reliable.

Had a box of goodies turn up this week. So I thought I would have a crack at repairing one of the back doors. It’s a job I have not been looking forward to as it looked like a tricky job. I decided to go straight in at the deep end, and have a go at the one in the worst condition. Not much better looking on the inside. After spending ages sanding down the wings last weekend. I thought I would get hold of some stripping discs for the grinder. Wow what a difference. The car has been painted in enamel and sanding discs get clogged very quickly. But not this disc, it just removed it instantly with out clogging and just left shiny metal. This is the result. There was a load of filler in there as well as fibre glass and paper. Once removed it became clear that it was going to need more work than I originally thought. Annoyingly you can only get repair panels for the front and not the back. Which seems odd as its one of the areas that always rot out. Next I decided to start chopping out the rotten areas in the door skin. Yeah that’s a bit on the crusty side. So I started to make up small repair sections. Starting on the top bit. Then a little bit of the side. And then the bottom bit that the skin is folded over. And that’s as far as I got today with it. I have to admit that when I first removed all the paint and rust. I thought maybe this was one repair job that was beyond my skill set. But I thought sod it I couldn’t make it any worse than it already is. So just do one small bit at a time. This might take me a while, but hopefully I can pull it off.

My Trabant is running a bike carb. It is fitted with a proper rubber manifold with a grove in it. So far after three years bouncing around on the potholes and country roads, it hasn’t dropped off yet. This is an old picture of it. It now has a pod filter fitted. Keep up the good work. If it wasn’t for the fact I have a fully rebuilt engine ready to go back in my Austin A30. I would have been really interested in this conversion for it.

Another weekend another relaxing day of cutting welding and getting covered in c**p. So Last time I tackled the passenger front wing. So might as well do the other side. As you can see this ones even worse than the other side. After seeing how the new panel lines up, I took the grinder to it and trimmed it down. Then cut out the rot in the old panel, and clamp in place the new section and start tacking it in. After lots of carefully welding and cooling with the air compressor. The new panel is permanently connected to the old. Followed by a bit of grinding with the a flap wheel to tidy up the welds. While I’m at it I might as well take the rest of the old paint off. And a quick coat of primer to cover the bare metal. So another bit of the puzzle done. I will probably order up some more repair panels for the two rear doors. Plus I still have to come up with a plan for the rust damage on the front panel. Well that’s it for another week. Roll on next Saturday.

Weekend again so time for some work on the Austin. Late start today as I had to take the Aygo for it’s MOT. Luckily it went straight through. My first plan was to tackle the rust hole in the front panel. And that’s what is lurking underneath. There’s about 4 layers of metal that has rotted out. And I’m not quite sure how I’m going to tackle this. I will probably have to cut large section out of the front panel to get access to the area. So plan B. I will have a go at one off the front wings. As you can see, the front is looking a bit frilly. And when I place the new panel against the old, you can see it’s not quite right shape. Best option was to cut down the repair panel and tweak it a bit. I used the clamps to hold it in position and put a few welds in place. Once happy with how it looks it’s just a case of carefully welding it in a bit at a time. I used my air compressor to keep the panel cool. After that it’s time to brake out the grinder and grind down the welds. Then I got a bit carried away and got busy with the sander. Almost as good as new. Then I gave it a quick coat of primer. The panel is just hanging there in that pic. When clamped into place it does lineup well. That’s it for this weekend. Hopefully do a bit more next week.
