I considered a mk1/mk2 passat or early audi - then remembered the Santana The santana was based on the passat but was born as VW's flagship model to run alongside the likes of fords Granada and Audi's 100 etc.. The Top of the range Santana was the GX5 model, it featured power steering, central locking, electric windows deep pile carpet, 2.0 5 pot injection engine etc Happy days didnt realise how big a car it actually is, not as roomy inside as my B4 passat, but a gigantic boot and very comfy seats couple that up with a smooth auto box and a 5pot 2.0 injection engine (althought its running a bit rough) gives an awesome cruising machine!!! Yes it does need a slam, here's the pics from the advert - I might add some more when I take them... gonna use it a bit first, then a slam, then a re-badge as a slamtana!! lol

wso plan for now - sort cambelt, service and tune up
then run it for a little while - iron out any more issues - then consider slammin it
thinking of not doing much esle tho, tidy up the blemishes tho, then maybe some other rims..
also going to get soe fury seat covers for the full pimp look
any ideas how many left on roads - i've not seen another for ages n ages

Thats class in a glass man, I love those old Santanas, as you say they are as rare as a mutha nowadays. Your plans sound fairly sympathetic so more power to you! Be warned, a set of furry seat covers will not give you a 'full pimp look' though.

I guess they're pretty rare. Passat GL5s pop up on eBay quite regularly, but hardly any Santanas. It has the same engine as my old Audi Coupe, a real honey of an engine when running properly. Decently grunty for a 2.0 and makes a wonderful noise. Extremely snazzy car, it looks so unmolested. Please don't molest it too much!

Extremely snazzy car, it looks so unmolested. Please don't molest it too much! it needs a fair bit of rot sorting around the boot area, but otherwise not much will change main plans will be lowering and wheels - not sure on rims yet, as these are the stock from this spec - so might just get refurbed and with a drop they'd tuck up and look cool.. - thoughts??? otherwise i want to keep it as stock as possible - there's some paint blemishes and a few car park dinks that need looking at... could do with some stealth tunes, so been thinking amp in boot and just plug ipod in direct through a couple of speakers all hidden - i love the fact the original stereo has never been touched and still fully works.. just a bit gutted that the dash is cracked tho... and amazingly all the elctric windows still work for the firs time in a while - i'm now getting there with the cars i want to keep - possibly forever just need to swap my b4 tdi passat estate for a mk2 passat estate and i'm done

very very cool car... I had a 4 cyl one ... that was an a reg too... was on here for a bit in readers rides... I slammed that over some 4 spoke revos and called it the slamtana lol... even made a badge up that I still have here somewhere.... ahh found the thread... alas no photos retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=readersrides&action=display&thread=51376EDIT: just looking at the sales brochure I have here... the santana gx5 is: "the flagship of the volkswagen model range" the audi/passat derived 5 cylinder engine develops 115bhp giving the car a top speed of 114 mph.. volkswagens own words say "faster than a 2.8 litre ford granada gl" has this one got power steering too? standard on gx5's and options on the rest supposedly.... wish someone had paid a lil extra for mine lol oh and you do know these are a right to lower don't you? they only go so far before alot of work is needed for anymore... and being so long you don't want to go too far as even mine grounded out on peoples drives haha just to give you an idea of how low mine was with those issues.. (on bumpstops on front) and on 165,65,r13 tyres over 6j revos...

i remember seeing yours mate - thats what got me going with the slamtana name... lol
yeah i poste dup top about it being the top of the range - got the sales brochure in the glove box - but no other paperwork with it which is a shame..
yep has power steering - cracking car at themo - even with it running lumpy
i've been looking into lowering options and it does seema tad difficlut - so far found that a few 40-60mm springs available but thats about it - tbh tho - i quite like the ride height - jacked up will be the new slammed next year - stock height ftw - lmao

that's a nice one, should be a "JS" engine code, one of the best 5pots imho ... check the ignition leads, they are mostly the reason for not proper running, usually the plugs are corroded inside... i had one of those, it was one of the best cars i have had (even my wife thinks so), it had a smooth engine and was easy to drive with the power steering (in germany that was an extra, you had to pay 1500 DMs =750 Euro on top), i once had a 5pot without power steering = unusable ....
i would refurbish those wheels (the american term for them is "snowflake", VW gave them the name "AVUS"), they are getting rare over here, used sets sell for silly money... and for lowering, i'd buy a set of H&Rs and some good shocks, some upgraded dome bearings and you should be sorted.....

So todays trip to wallingford went well.. Cruised up to crazyquiffs - or should I say spluttered up there - misjudged the mileage tho and passed this on the way.. Wante dto get there at 130000 , but was 3 miles over - oh well.. So today Neil with a little help from me changed.. Cam belt full kit Fan Belt Oil filter and oil air filter Dizzy cap - after marking up firing order - see pics.. Rear brake cylinder fitted 3 prong spark plugs We tried to order a rotor arm to be told they are obsolete - so had a rummage around crazyquiffs stores and found one.. amazing what they have in the used parts section there!! - perfect fit and in decent condition too.. Also tried to order HT leads but were sent wrong ones along with power steering belt - luckily enough the old ones are fine.. We also gave the old girl a good going over, underneath she is suprisingly solid, hardly any issues at all.. Well chuffed - even Neilsaid it was a good solid honest car.. The cam belt was a bit of a curse word to change, front bumper has to come off, plus a few other bits too.. Neil had a good look over rest of car and whilst waiting for the parts to arrive I cracked out a grinder and some stone chip and tackled some of the bubbled up paint - found it was literally that and fairly solid - so grinded back to good metal, treated rest - filled and stonechipped... only really had time to do one side - but its a start!! I also treated the plastics to some back to black remedies (cheap tyre black, but it works) We then got car back together, checked everything and I took it for a run.. it burbed into life - AWESOME - the 5 pot sounds amazing now its running well - no misfire, no backfire.. pulls well and the auto box is smooth!! quick clean up in the engine bay - topped up the washer bottle (check out the size of it too!!!) - it was over half full and still took about 6 litres - its massive!! Then I drove her home.. so smooth - gave it beans ina few places to and she picks up well considering her bulk and age.. Arrived home - showing Mrslawsy what we've acheived and after a reading another post jumped in the boot!!! and for those of you who havemet me - you know how huge this boot must be!! LOL then just an end of the day family shot on the drive wth the mk1.... ps sorry about poor pics - only had my ihpone with me!!!

You'd be better off with Cris's thread now retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=readersrides&thread=64395&page=1Nice Santana. I'm sure as I said on my thread that this is the 'other' local Santana. Looks great! Big fan of the 5Cyl, I have a Passat wagon with it in and I went off the clock (more than 120! Private track I must add! )
