This is my new "project" that I acquired a few week's ago I bought it just as a little project as Ive always had a keen interest in car's and needed something a bit simpler to work on than my daily car. I'm planning on just taking my time and doing what I want to do the correct way the first time round These were taken at work before I tried to drive it home... After testing it the previous day, all was well.. Took it to work as I was leaving my daily car there, I was going to drive the polo home to the garage, but I got about 2miles where it broke down, and I caused rather a large Que in the middle of warrington... sorry if I held you up lol Managed to get it towed home in the end anyway, and after some research and some farting around with it, Ive put down my trouble to the current carb that's on it, with a dodgy autochoke... So this is how its sat in my garage for the past couple of week's while I sort some funding out to get it running again. Got fed though as I'm skint at the mo, had some high temp paint spray laying about so just painted the rocker cover for now, going to re-do it gloss black eventually though lol Anyway.. I've changed the thermostat, and going to put a new rad on, and change the water pump possibly next week, while I source some bike carb's for it, as I really cant be bothered sorting this stupid auto-choke thing out.. Plus I really like the way bike carb's look/sound lol Hopefully change the exhaust system next time fund allows, including a new manifold, and then get it slammed Any feedback positive or negative will be taken on board, hopefully some of you guys will be able to help me out/give me inspiration. Thanks for looking anyway

if you havnt allready... i think bogg brothers are stil the people to talk to regarding bike carbs as they can make a custom inlet and get it running on them pretty cheap... as for exhaust speak to philj on here.. he can supply stainless throughout... thats what I'm going for when money allows i think on my loon... and possibly on my mk1 if he can make a standard one in stainless... oh and blowtorch your bumpers.. do it slow and do it a couple of times... i read someone mentioning it makign the bumpers brittile... it only does that to bumpers that were meant to be grey in the first place, Like late mk1 polos and some golfs... yours will be fine. Ive done it to all my mk2s and never had any trouble... Looks great straight off too

I was just going to try this turtlewax back to black stuff.. Ive used it before on my Leon, but the rubstrips on that wernt as faded as these lol, the paint dosnt have much fade to it though, once ive got it running I'l be giving it a full detail so we will see what the paints like.. Yes, Ive seen philj off polo-club, also will be speaking to him about going low.. Ive heard that the carb's off a bike would be pretty much a straight swap but the guy I was asking off polo-club has stopped replying lol All the info I got about it, is to do with a mk3 with fuel injection so I'm still confused to be honest lol, but i did hear that boggs bro's are the curse word hot for fabricating inlet manifolds though, but ive seen all kinds of way's you can "bodge" your own up... Thanks for the advice, any more help with the carb's would be great though

personally id be getting a new carb fitted up.. Or just replacing the existing autochoke... bet its the pulldown unit tho... Ive had it before and its usually just needing adjustment.. they are so fiddly... ebay number....: 150421289466 but they are a bit pricey that way... id be looking for a breaking mk2 that runs and gettin it off that... no bike carb set up is gonna be plug n play.. jetting or at least tuning will be needed.... and you will need an electric fuel pump, a fuel king regulator, and to blank off the orignal fuel pump hole in the head.. Youll also need the manifold to have a takeoff for vaccum for the dizzy advance... all in all alot of work oh and bumperwise... that back to black only lasts a month or so... blowtorch looks better and its permanent.. or at least makes em look new I don't mean to be funny, But thought id Say . If your looking for decent advice... stear clear of clubpolo. I know that might be harsh to some on there but there are alot of people willing to screw a newbie over for a quick buck by talking curse word. polo 3 or here are your best bets for honest people and lovers of the mk1,2 and 3 polos.. clubpolo tends to be full of mk4 onwards owners with mk2 bits left in there sheds...

hey no worries mate, all I'm after is help and advice, and you seem to know your stuff as I am a noob lol, I had been concentrating on learing on how to make my derv quicker, but I like the old skool stuff better, but lack the knowledge, so I want to learn and have fun hopefully along the way Well this is the response I got to my question I asked about the bike carb's... "Well its far easier to convert your car than an injection model, its just the later car is the one most want to convert. Its literally a carb swap for pre-1990 cars. Your current fuel supply is fine, exactly as it is now. Your swirl pot sorts the pressure issue out. Same with the ignition, you have the correct one already. You can even use your accelerator cable if you cut most of the ball end off but leave half the crimp on like i did,all you need is a manual choke cable and a manifold (or my method of four flanges and longer vac tubing). The carbs shouldn't need any modification but for the main jets. If you use the '99-'01 Honda CBR600F-X/Y carbs I've been playing with you'll want the jets drilled a fraction bigger than standard at 1.35mm,even with economy in mind. You can probably run them safely straight off the bike, but then you could probably run it with 1.40mm jets without running rich. " does that not sound right then?

hmmm sounds about right... not sure on the fuel suply tho... Ive heard of people running bike carbs on 1043 cc polos and starving them on the standard pump before having to run a electric... Its not that it wont pump the fuel i think the pump just cant keep up when you stamp on it. and then you start running lean and pinking....
seems you found one of the few on there actually talking some sence haha

yeah cant fault your logic... Id go bike carbs if money was no object... but if it was a daily id go standard... depends what you want it for i guess... bike carbs do sound good tho. and coupled with a decent cam and 4 branch should make that go well... My old 1300 was pretty quick...

well, its not going to be a daily, but it has to be practical enough I can drive it lol, would love to take it to some meet's, and money IS an object, but as long as I can keep my patience than anything is possible...... in theory... haha

na bought them on here mate, ive found out since tho they are vw items... the ridge round the edge means they are mk2 gl ones you can get em on ebay, But the ones that come up are usually british ones and the vw wheels don't have the lip required to hold them on "properly"

cool, I was gonna ask aswell, is there a difference between a polo saloon and a derby?? From pics I've seen they look identical, but Ive never seen another saloon, nevermind a derby in real life lol

the derby is a mk1 polo with a boot the saloon/classic like yours is a mk2 polo with a boot..
the derby name didnt go down well over here so they changed the name for the mk2 version.
although supposedly they carried it on for one year of mk2's in germany.. I think personally thats a load of bull as the cars seen with derby badges have all been modified... so guessing badges changed at the same time. also vw themselves deny ever using the derby name on the mk2...

ah nice one fella, i just found a .pdf file on the history of the polo, I knew it all started with the audi 50 but its quite interesting how it progressed lol, Ive always pretty much overlooked polo's and looked at golfs, but they seem like they have always been cool little cars aswell. G40 sounds rather cool, didnt even know they were supercharged! lol
