Been a while...long story short after a year or two away from the "scene" (oh I hate that word) my father, who was is the source of my inspiration and interest on cars suddenly passed away last year. He was reasonably well known in both the classic mini community and most of my weekends when younger were spent at one show or another...however my life of late has meant iv been away from cars for too long. His passing was the bump I needed to focus less on work and more on "life"... Anyway, as a result I aquired his Bay window camper project, over the past few months have been slowly putting it back together. So bare with me first post is catch up to were I am with it now... Two things first todo, put together the 1776 engine on the bench and rebuild the interior... Plenty of spare ply meant materials where no probs... Full length rock and roll Door cards back in... Cheap sink? Try a stainless dog bowl

With the interior coming along i moved back to the engine... New tinware, supposibly the best aftermarket tin you can buy...but not even close to the fit of genuine tin. Plenty of persuasion was required in places. Support bar needed a tickle to clear the berg oil pump cover... Eventually got the thing in...and 3 exhausts later (seems manufacturers forget an early bay has a support bar...) Moved her outside under her own steam Now just trying to solve a sticking throttle issue, fitted a CSP bellcrank linkage to get rid of the awful EMPI kadron linkage...new cable this weekend should solve it once and for all Then iv just gotta weld this baby in...

Had another look at my throttle linkage today in an attempt to solve my sticking throttle pedal. So new cable, return spring and liner fitted and STILL sticks. Had a closer look at the pedal and noticed some numpty has welded it on a shaft supported by two nuts to the floor and of course no spring is present! So gives me an excuse to fit one of these now... ...bloody got to wait for it to arrive tho, so another wait till we hit the road for that mot

Sorry to hear of your loss chap. That's a very pretty Bay, looks nice & stock on the outside too I was going to suggest checking the state of the accelerator pedal as the Bay I had did the same thing (the numpty that fitted the new pedal assembly had muffed it up which gave me a sticky throttle). Any other plans for her? Nice job on the interior, I don't know why more people don't build their own, I helped a mate build a 'boat style' (lots of destressed wood) interior for his early Bay & was amazed how well it came out. Bit of planning, choosing of materials and a bit of patience certainly yields a result. ;D I notice another flat 4 on the bench, have you got other VW's?

Cheers Dungbug Yes always the way, checked the most obvious thing last! my gearbox tube was shot anyway so not a total loss. Now have a nice teflon lined tube running front to back so once the pedal is sorted it should be silky smooth. Il get a pic of the comedy bodge done to the old pedal next time... Little handy with a jigsaw and some paint so thought "why not?" and anyway had all the ply needed already so was zero cost...the best way! the bed alone saved £400 over a steel bluebird or JK one. For now plans are just to get her running and enjoy, the 1776 should make it a little more lively without being unreliable. Really want to just get to some shows and meets this year...my last one was in 2010! Long term if i ditch my other projects and just have this one (misses wants a house etc...) then i will probably look a EFI and maybe a turbo for bit more pep...then of course is the tintop roof clip i have that may get put on! Oh and well spotted, yes i have a few others...a 1303 and a 1970 1300 from SA in my lockup and i did have a T25 till last year...

SA Bug, very nice :-) That bed look really well, like you say, saved a few bob towards other nice bits ;D T25's are nice vans, but I do prefer the look of the Bays. Don't feel bad about the lack of show 'action', my last VW only show was way back in 2007.

Well its been a few months but we did progress forwards! Pleased to say she sailed thru her mot and is now home with me, and hopefully on going with the mrs away for a few days camping next week! Main distraction (and lack of updates...) was me finishing this and moving it out the workshop and back to its owners house After a ticket and a good clean... New floor... And got the bed mostly sorted and then some gauges... AEM wideband was good investment...I'm paranoid about running the 1776 too lean Sure it will be fine....least if we brakedown we've got a working telly!

I love that, why not grab a cheap PS2 so you can have some DVD's while you relax.

Thx for the comments peeps "LuckyGti"- great to see how your 205 has come along....makes me miss my GRD soo bad! I love that, why not grab a cheap PS2 so you can have some DVD's while you relax. Hearing you on that one - dvd player built in, and sound from telly runs though the Kenwood headunit - F1 is great with the sub!

Well back from a few days camping, and aside a few niggles like a dead leisure battery she was faultless great fun...even the Mrs enjoyed herself Campsite was fantastic. Normans Bay near Eastbourne - view from the van at night... So now I'm back and with a few days hols left...be looking at refurbishing the awful brakes - cue Machine7 and a load of wheel cylinders, shoes, and bolts... Oh and hopefully new tyres on Monday to stop the bloody scrubbing on the front!

Looks a nice camper, and a lot of fun Loving the changes to the interior you've done as well Thanks, works for us and will be ideal when i put a new tintop roof on in new year... Think i have solved the steering lock, but wont know until i drop her back down tomo. Just waiting for a Heritage order to arrive in the morning, and a mate to bring back my front wheels with some fresh - lower profile - rubber... Will hold off on the new beam for now, have got recon lower torsion arms with balljoints on the way to finish the front end off....however if my mini sells this week then i may just make that phonecall to Creative Engineering an get a Weedeater beam on order

Heritage parts arrived bang on time, so set about finishing the front axle. First made up new balance pipe - rite nightmare! Has to be spot on or it hits the shoes, or the springs... Then wheel bearings greased, drum back on, new hoses + bleed nipples, and adjusted up not too bad once you get going Now just waiting for my mate to bring my wheels back after he finishes work and i can drop her back down again - then the fun starts all over again with the rear.
