Just looking on YouTube at trabant stuff when I came across this. Mk2 Golf with a two-stroke 600cc Trabant lump in it. Now that makes a change from a VR6 lump Anyone out there come across strange engine swop's.

Red golf with white lump looks awesome! I wonder what the performance is like with a two stroke?

one of the commenters: "Revenge for the Trabant 1.1 " more sounds like it needs shorter gearing to match those massive wheels, i love it.

It's overwheeled, and probably has the same performance as a MK3 GTi Still interesting though. Would be better with some nice small banded steels.

And looking at the pic's that TerraRoot posted I can see that they have put The seat's and dashboard from a Trabant in it to.

You really have to forget the whole idea of whether the Trabant lump is a backward step or not, to consider that it is or to suggest other engines that could have been fitted completely misses the point. The car is an utterly fantastic exercise in function over design, simplicity over complication, minimal over maximum........ I don't think there is another "more suitable" engine that would have sat in that bay so cleanly( totally at odds with what it emits) a dashboard that couldnt have looked any more right in the car or seats that just need to be sat on. I'm not sure if there are cleaner looking cars out there but I bet there arent any that make the minimal look so damn right. You cannot take the engine out of context, it IS what the car is about. Brilliant IMHO.

I love it mostly because i love my two-strokes, but also because it's different, if some one put a 26bhp four-stroke in there i'd be very puzzled, but a two stoke i can under stand. besides some reed vavles and expansion pipes along with a few files would have that engine up to 60bhp in an afternoon. It could have been done better with a wartburg engine. Notice the interior? flat floor i think is from the trabant.

I would love to have 60hp in done in one afternoon.

Copeys Capri fits well in this 'well out side the box' requirement. Golf is fantastic. Zeb is right - it is the point of the car to be minimal, not to focus on the engine - that's why the doorcards are vacuum formed plastic.

Well maybe not an afternoon... but still I'm sure it's doable, apart from the blasted disc valves being buried by the crank. up the port timings, angle the tansfers (theres only two, correct?) directly away from the exhaust port, fit two ktm300 spannies and at least a 30mm carb. seen this? www.ldm-tuning.de/en/trabant_601/tuning_parts/engine/all.htm
