Just been listening to Radio Le Mans. Sir Stirling has just come into the pits after a couple of laps in qualifying for the LM Legends race on Saturday and announced that it's the first time he's been 'scared' driving a race car. he said, "I always said that I would give up when I no longer enjoyed it and I didn't enjoy that at all". "I will not be racing at the weekend" The end of a great racing career...

Legend of motorsport I hope I'm still driving like that at the age of 81!!! He's done well to even drive again after breaking numerous bones in his legs and feet after a three storey fall down a lift shaft at his house last year!

I accept that he has made this decision, but if he never takes another Bentley Blower round Le Mans, drifting it sideways through the esses I'm prepared to eat my hat. In fact I'll go and buy a hat especially to eat.

Once, when I was little, my dad had a red Sierra (like the police had) and did an exclusive magazine interview with him while driving him in a high speed police convoy towards the airport. I'm assured that he was the epitome of gentleman-ship but at 5/6 years old, you're more fussed on how many cakes you can eat. Hopefully I'll meet him again

Met him several times in my life, (went to school with his son, same year/classes ect) total legend never seemed to mind being asked 1001 inane questions by some speccy, spotty schoolboy when he probably just wanted to get gone...
Watched him race on numerous occasions the best by a long shot was at LM legends about 5 years back did about four laps against (i think) Johnny Herbert both in D types, i think at most there was a metere between the two cars for the whole race, the most amazing driving I've ever seen, total LEGEND...
End of an epoch.

That is very sad news indeed but I suppose there comes a time, when you come to a certain age, that you just have to slow down (especially when you've been speeding around for about 70 years!!!)... It can't have been an easy decision for him but if that's how he feels about racing then so be it... That chap is a legend and that's a fact, the track will miss him dearly...!

I have the upmost respect for the older drivers. I would love to meet him, or any of them for that matter. A true legend.

Saw him a few weeks back at an Autograph signing and he looked in good spirits, but as he says, if you're not enjoying it, what's the point?
I hope he still enjoys his weekend at Le-Mans.

Apparently he's doing his 'final lap' at Le Mans at 12.30 Not a bad way to bow out

It's an overused word these days, but he really is a legend.

Yeah, anyone who has a carbon fibre lift made by Williams F1 in their house really can only be described as a legendary

It is great that he has been able to choose when to retire after such a full racing life when so many of his contemporaries never made it.
