OK you have a 1985 Mini City. Nice nick, worth £1750? You buy a wrecked 1965 Mini, transfer the ID over, change a bit of brightwork. Total investment £500 or so, say? You now have a "modernised 1965 Mini" worth £4500 to an unwary punter and you'll save a bit on road tax in the mean time as well. And you wonder why the DVLA hates us... Auction title should be "Mini ringing kit, ideal for tax evasion, ripping off n00bs or cooling a stolen car"  |

Maybe, just maybe this will be reshelled into a new shell ? www.minishells.co.uk/Not sure they are fully "leagal" in the DVLAs eyes though ?? or a heratage shell ? would it legaly be a Mk1 and keep the reg if it used a new Mk2 shell ? |

Those wouldn't be as they are restored used shells, but you can legaly use a new BMH Mk3 onwards mini shell to reshell a Mk1/2 mini and retain its status. Plus BMH are making a prototype mk1 shell at the mo But you are most likely right that it will be used to re-id a younger mini. |

The very description itself is the same "pile of scrap metal, complete with V5 and vin plate" Who'll put their hand up and say they wouldn't do exactly the same though? I'd sell it. It's not my problem what the next owner does with their 'car'. |

It's not my problem what the next owner does with their 'car'. i cant be that 2 faced i've done it loads of times with old cars pulled out of garages (twas my job for a few years clearing garages), most ended up broken for spares but there are probably a few out there in other shells, 1 deffo in another shell, NOT a stolen one just reshelled as it was 1 of only 6 cars produced in that spec. I allways sold the shell with the V5 as a shell in need of a BIG resto with full ID. What's worse the viva sports hatch i sold to be broken for a morris minor hot road or the Mk1 mini that got reshelled into an already owned rebuilt Mk1 shell simply cos my shell had a number plate wother a few grand? I spose seeing this a lot having been a recovery driver i get desensatised to it ? |

I had a mate who re-shelled a '63 Mini logbook onto a late-70's Mk4 shell.....most of the Mk1 brightwork was easily sorted, but the funniest part was when he came to take the photos for his agreed-value insurance, when he ran some white pinstripe tape down the windows to give the impression of sliders, then carefully applied dummy external door hinges made from plasticine. A bit of accidentally-on-purpose camera shake (this was in the days before digital cameras) and he was good to go.
Obviously I'm not condoning such behaviour (although in his defence he's never actually sold the thing, it's still buried in the back of his garage). ;D
