Hello there folks... I am thinking about buying an e24 BMW 6-series and I thought I'd better get some insurance quotes before thinking about things too much (I don't want to be broken hearted after buying a motor!!!)... I got in touch with my regular insurance company and they quoted me over £700 The reasoning was is that they don't really insure BMW drivers unless they are over 30 years old (I think that means they rip off BMW drivers under 30, I am 29!!!)... I then went online to do my homework and the first stop was the insurance company with the annoying, singing, string haired cartoon lady we see on the T.V nearly every half an hour... There I put all my details in and I ended up with a much more favourable quote of just over £270 which isn't too bad at all... What I want to know is how on Earth the quotes can vary so damn wildly and I would also like to know how insurance companies are allowed (in a certain way...) to discriminate against younger drivers...?! What are your thoughts...

They can do what ever they want as without cover you're screwed, so all you can do is bite the bullet and pay up. Make sure to declare the modifications so they don't have any excuse not to pay in the event of a claim.

Insurance quotation is actually one of the fairer industries out there - they work from the data they have to calculate the risk to them of a given combination of variables. (this does not mean to say they aren't sneaky when they try to avoid paying - though if you have everything in order then they can't avoid it)
They are fighting a huge battle at the minute against all kinds of fraudulent claims etc. that cost a huge amount... this must be balanced somehow.
Also, younger drivers are more of a risk regardless.
p.s. I am a 23yo who has nothing whatsoever to do with the insurance industry

Erm... ever heard of classic car insurance? Should cost you around £200 from the likes of Herritage. I loved my 635. Used to give me back-ache though. Is the one you're looking at as good as the one I had? Any excuse to post the pics.

A lot of insurance companies specialise in a certain type of business. If you don't fall into that category then they will quote high as they don't really want your business, but they don't want to refuse to quote.
As above, ring round some of the classic companies for quotes.

The distinction is between classic or not. If you get a classic policy then the milage will be limited. But for me that was never a problem. The milage allowance was generous. Something like 7.5k per year. As I say, will make ordinary insurance look like a mugs game.

Footman james suck tbh since they were taken over by AON their customer service is curse word. RH are costing me nearly 1/2 what FJ were charging for the same deal. do your homework and shop around.

I've got two policys with footman James, asked for 5k milage on each, came back with unlimited milage on each fully comp on classic policys. Both policys very cheap too.

Hmm, but I don't buy insurance for the customer service!!! I pay the minimum needed to get on the MID legally. I would much rather we used the system they have in many other countries where you insure your car against damage if you want to. It would be much cheaper for people who wanted to protect their cars. I would drive around without insurance and that would be much cheaper for me as well. People who have valuable property to protect should insure their own stuff and not expect other people to pay for damage to the really expensive things they've bought.

The 2 cars I have at the moment are on a classic policy with Footman James and to be honest I am pretty happy with that company... They seem pretty helpful and I've used the free breakdown cover a few times too...!!! I was shocked they quoted me so much but their rule is that if you have a BMW you need to be over 30... Oh well it seems Sure Term are working out to be ok but I will have to pay extra for breakdown cover (better to be safe than sorry!)... I know that insurance companies have to cover their arses with regards to the readies so I shouldn't moan I suppose... Anyhow, let the 6-series hunting commence...!!!!!!! (ejenner your old 6-er looks the absolute business my good man... I think the one I've got my eye on might not be as prim but it's still proper!!!)

Just no mistaking it. Try and get a quote from Herritage. Those are the people I have used up until the point when I got a trade policy.
