For those of you that missed the main story of how it travelled 10,000 miles to set up camp on my drive...... retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1083781st things 1st....see if it goes, however previous owner obviously lost the keys at some point.... original switch.. replacement with no keys.. luckily I had this one in the garage...with keys Swapped a few wires back to their rightful places, popped on a battery and..... It goes!! Sadly though it looks like one of the headgaskets has catastrophically failed so guess what I'm doing tomorrow on another note I have removed the roof bars which is an improvement.....

Sad to see the previous owners thought they knew something about wiring. Glad its solid though & certainly has plenty of potential.

Dedication bringing that over! Did you know about the head gasket? Looking forward to seeing this rolling in the UK. Is it keeping the Aussie patina?

The guy i bought it off did say there may be a head gasket issue with it but i think on the way over its let go fully and all the coolant is now in the sump.....still its a simple job to do,i was gonna do them today but got sidetracked picking a mate up from gatwick so gonna have a day of it tomorow Very pleased with it tho, considering it could have been a right dog,it needs no welding, the exhaust is all there, the clutch/brakes work, electrics work, shouldnt take long to get it through an mot As for the patina itll be keeping as most of it as possible that doesnt threaten to turn rusty and dissapear by next summer lol

Right, today i set out to see just how bad the head gasket situation was....... Here you can see the reamins of the ozzie emmisions control system Unfortunately one of them broke when it was removed,so the decision was made to replace the heads with some uk ones i have on another engine. It didnt look good as soon as i removed the rocker cover bolts it started oozing...... Urgh....engine? or glue factory And the other side.... Undid all the headbolts then came across a bit of a design flaw... Feck..... So i ended up with this... New heads removed and soaking in a bucket of parrafin... Tomorrow is valves out time, managed to get a complete head gasket set and clutch kit for 50 quid! bargain ;D Random pics

I know you want to keep original but could you not put a sport engine straight in looks like it would be a straight swop

Flat four? I was a bit confused about the mention of two heads until I saw the engine coming apart, then it made much more sense.
Horrible looking Magnolia paint filling the engine there though.

What a cool wagon! I have not seen one of them about in NZ for ages!!! Not surprised you imported one to the UK as it looks so wicked. I hope you do keep it all as is, ropey and workhorse like.
We have just been given a 1990 legacy wagon last week. all taxed and tested. Drove it 120kms yesterday and it too uses some water but only a tiny bit. No emulsion under the cap. I think it must be losing it straight into chambers? But no bubbling in radiator either? weird. Used about 100-200 mil of coolent.
I like your wagon and I'm a watching it !

Plans are just to run it standard for now,i do have some original 70,s alloys waiting to go on it tho,its a 4wd so lowering it is a bit pointless i case i have to take a shortcut through the bush to the shops or summat Seeing as everyone keeps asking I'm not gonna be specific but i aint gonna see much change from 3k by the time ive paid to register it,that includes price of the car/shipping/customs not anything ive spent on parts since its been here. It helped that i only got the car for less than 200 ukquid meaning i wasnt stung for very much at the customs office. Apparently its cheaper to do roll on roll off even tho it apparently takes longer,it took mine 6 weeks in a container.

Not too much to report, progress been a bit slow but today the engine went back in! Looks small don't it lol All ancillaries refitted, fluids added however by the time id finished it was getting dark and I had that feeling id forgot summat so I'm gonna wait till morning so I can check it over properly before I turn the key On another note ive stripped and replaced one front and both rear brakes, added new discs/pads/shoes etc and removed 3 live spiders and a large hibernating bug thing...... just the drivers front to do now then it should hopefully be good for an mot. Ive also got a set of these being refurbed for it as I type ;D Special thanks go to grunty for my shiny yellow rocker boxes and for overseeing the wheels

This looks really great. I'm amazed how dinky the motor is with all the bits stipped off it. Anyone who replies to a for sale thread saying "I would if you weren't so far away" should immediatley be re-directed to this thread.

Yep its an all alloy setup..
Heads were checked,i know the engine they were removed from had no issues so left out skimming them.
Its doing it right from startup so not heat related, temp gauge shows 1/4 sits there happily,hoses/engine don't feel excessively hot to touch, all pipes and heater are warm....
Will check oil tomorrow to see if its got water in the oil again, and maybe try torqueing the head bolts up a notch see if that makes any difference.
I'm unaware of the cars history which doesnt help, the fans been hardwired permanently and the thermostats awol,it could have been trundling around like that for ages down under so maybe it has been cooked a few times
