Got asked very nicely to pack up and leave the yard last week due to them needing the space, so today a couple of mates came up to help me move things. We could've made two trips, but Jon wasn't having any of it. Trailer featured; 1x 80" in bits 4x sets of hoodsticks 1x 2.5NA Diesel engine 1x spare 2a gearbox 1x hard top and a myriad of assorted spares/ parts. And in the back of the above Range rover was the wings, front panel, steering wheel, random spares, and the windscreen conveniently crammed in on top of my head. Being 6'3" in the back of a Rangey and under all that is not a pleasant way to spend a half hour drive. All in all, good day monging around Essex laughing lots. Hopefully having it right outside my back door will encourage me to get it finished...

Jeeeeez, haven't checked this in quite some time! Now you mention it, the cyberman comment is spot on hahaaa! Thread seems to have deleted all my old photos which sucks majorly hard Anyway, to catch up here it is from when it arrived on my driveway end of 2011; Got a good friend of mine down to finish welding up the bulkhead Which is kinda where it sat for a while, got to the stage where it needed an awful lot of work donewhich wasn't easy on my drive especially without access to welders and hoists, so it headed off down to my friend's workshop in Portslade for a month and a heart transplant, with regular visits from me to help out. Out with the V8 and in with a 200TDI removed from a Discovery. Flew through it's MOT in June; (pic removed for screwing with the thread) Then i parked it in some railings at 40mph and killed it. Meant far too much to me to give up on though, so i bought a new chassis and put it back on the road in a weekend with the help of my friends. Set to it on stripping the truck down and removing the engine mounts and battery tray from the new chassis; ...which was all good 'til we found some very rotten metal underneath the original mounts - go steady when galving old chassis' kids! This pedal shaft took literally the best part of an hour and a half to remove; Engine and box out; New engine mounts on; Another cheeky little upgrade we did while re-building this was fitting parabolics we had made to fit the narrow spring mounts on the rear of 80"s - shortened and machined at the ends, they are amazing. (These things are absolutely incredible, driving at 60 across some fairly uneven road on the way home last night and it barely noticed it, so good!) Rear axle on; Front axle out; Front axle on, loosely fitted with the old crash damaged springs (we changed these the next day for parabolics) Engine and box back in; Donor chassis number three brought in to give some body mounting tabs. End of day one; Rear tub and bulkhead on, needed a little tweaking to fit and the doors are still sitting a little high on the back but I think this has something to do with the tub not quite being mounted high enough at the back where we welded the new tabs on, it's all good though - i've seen worse! Coming together... All done! And here he is, parked up at my uni ready for something awesome to happen. There it is really, how to un-write off a car in about 18 hours. The old chassis is going to be repaired by a good friend of mine who intends to put it under his land rover when it eventually sees the road again, so it's not the end of that! Current plans are to leave it be, bar adding a front bumper, new tyres, a roll cage and some decent seats and harnesses just to keep things a bit safer. So happy to have it back on the road, can't wait to give it the use it deserves! Haven't seen much in the way of sussex meets or anything, but if anyone wants to go to the pub sometime gimme a shout!

If you want some different tyres I have a set of Black Modulars with Recip Mud Trials on, All with a fair bit of tread left. 4x with good tread 2x spares with bad Tyres Bald on one side...I'd swap them for your nice Wolf Rims with the 7.50's on... Or you could just get some huge Kuhmo KL71's for it... Nice Land Rover, Wish I had the patience to rebuild mine after I wrote it off...

I always enjoy it when you post this on trials-forum, it definitely makes a nice break from all the VAG stuff that's usually on there!
Glad to see it's on the road and going well, I do love this old truck. I wish I had an excuse to own a landy, but I know it'd never get used as intended. Maybe later in life.
PS, the dead photos are a facebook thing, they seem to have changed the addresses of all the pictures a little while back, my Scirocco thread's missing a few because of it too.

If you're having trouble with the TDI eating gearboxes run it without the turbo.

If you're having trouble with the TDI eating gearboxes run it without the turbo. Where's the fun in that? If anything it's getting a bigger turbo this year Seriously though, this box spent a lot of it's previous life behind a 3.5V8 so it's not had it easy; i'm really not surprised it's given up now. 10 years or so handling 3x more power than it was ever supposed to is always gonna take it's toll. I've helped out with a few 200di conversions and they're all been a bit disappointing. I've just ordered up an AP Driveline clutch for it and am gonna do the gearbox swap saturday with any luck, hopefully that'll kill a few birds with one stone. Has a good habit of vibrating and making more noise instead of accelerating at the really torquey bits of the rev-range, so hopefully this'll cure it. And if it doesn't, i'll be proud of myself for having a 100% Britpart-free Land Rover haha! Oh and Robin, you should definitely get involved! A cheap 2a or something would be perfect for the summer - this doesn't get used "properly" per se, but it's enjoying it's retirement ;D

Your series looks amazing, wonderful job They definately need the turbo's, if anything, it's dead easy to turn up the fuel and boost if they're still too slow . What turbo do you plan on fitting? Which gearbox are you putting in? When I had a v8 in my series 3, the gearbox was a hybrid 2a/3 that I built, it never gave any trouble, never treated with care or respect, just kept reliably whining away! I replaced it for an lt77 as I needed an extra gear, and another challenge

ey up, i run the radial version of your tyre which is 50:50 road/offroad instead of 80% off, 750r16 and tube type so fit the traditional bill. more closed tread block than yours, they don't drum on the road and fairly good tarmac manners, but aggressive enough for most offroad work. www.darrenh.co.uk/landy/lrwheels02.jpg

That's an awesome Landy. I will own an old series landy again some day. But not for a while yet as I've just bought a tax exempt Scimitar!
