Your series looks amazing, wonderful job They definately need the turbo's, if anything, it's dead easy to turn up the fuel and boost if they're still too slow . What turbo do you plan on fitting? Which gearbox are you putting in? When I had a v8 in my series 3, the gearbox was a hybrid 2a/3 that I built, it never gave any trouble, never treated with care or respect, just kept reliably whining away! I replaced it for an lt77 as I needed an extra gear, and another challenge Cheers mate It's all quite a way off as it needs a cage, proper seats and disc brakes first ideally, but i've been looking into T28s a fair bit recently which seems like i should be a good shout and an easy enough upgrade to the current T25 that's on there, however in all honesty it'll probably come down to what stuff i can pilfer from anything Japanese that's in the scrappy at the time haha. We'll see, got plenty of time to think. Just wanna make it more than just another TDI'd series really, if i could see 150bhp out of it i'd be pretty happy! Interesting gearbox you made! I've got another 2a unit to drop in, cost me £20 so at that price i can afford to put a 'new' one in every year haha. Would love to LT77 it but space is the killer with an 80 - the rear prop's about 12" long anyway, so with that and the inevitable salisbury axle conversion it'll end up just having a UJ stuck on the end of the gearbox

Would love to LT77 it but space is the killer with an 80 - the rear prop's about 12" long anyway, so with that and the inevitable salisbury axle conversion it'll end up just having a UJ stuck on the end of the gearbox I've just taken mine off the road, and will be fitting a set of Range Rover axles, though it does currently have stage 1 v8 front brakes, which do work well at leaving a pair of wobbly black lines down the road ;D I've tweaked the pump up, and wound the wastegate in so it barely opens, the boost gauge rises to about 18psi, and it goes like a v8, next to no lag either, but it is a rough diesel. Plans are to fit a Mercedes inline 5 for a little bit more refinement and power, 150bhp and 200lb/ft as standard, more if tweaked ;D The T25 on my Rover P6 has larger ends (I'm no turbo expert) and I have wondered if it would be a good small upgrade to the dinky Land Rover turbo, before going considerably larger. I have been told about someone local to me who has compound charged a 200tdi, using the stock T25 and a Holset HX35, it supposedly goes well! My gearbox was mostly series 2a, with the hydraulic series 3 bellhousing and clutch, and worked really well, I just banged it through the gears, none of this double de-clutching nonsense . I can't remember how much I cut out of the rear prop, 4" I think, but yeah, anything shorter on an 88 will be too short for any form of off-road action in my opinion, so practically a no-no on an 80 unless you sit the engine over the front bumper

Not bad at all! I'd highly recommend a Mazda SLT 3.5 if you feel like a true hero, they're heavy but shiiiiit do they have some power! That's a fair mod, I just ripped the whole lot off on mine as the clutch is mechanical. Anyway, little bit of this happened; Bought the "new" gearbox for £20 off of a friend 3 and a half years a go, was sat in his garden for god knows how long before then. Stuck it in and job's a good'un! So weird driving around thinking about where it came from haha. Can't believe the difference the new clutch has made, genuinely got scared a few times on the way back from the workshop - frighteningly quick now. So nice to have a full set of gears to choose from, too

Your series looks amazing, wonderful job Just wanna make it more than just another TDI'd series really, if I could see 150bhp out of it i'd be pretty geaat You can get 140bhp just by tweaking the pump and fuelling... I've heard the Rover 820 Vitesse works well too. I've gone for an Audi 2.5tdi turbo. On the Audi it made 185bhp from the same size motor, and it's a vnt turbo, so should have a much wider power band. Dunno if it fits yet coz it's way too cold to be outside messing with Landrovers! :-(

True! As i understand it though, the originals are so inefficient when you start playing with them i'd be a lot keener to put something better on there straight off! Do need to up the fuelling a little though, i think it's a little lean at the moment with the 300 turbo and nothing else changed.
Interesting shout on the Audi turbo though! Look forward to seeing how it goes for you
Top of my list now is a new set of wheels and tyres, there's a horrendous vibration at the moment which could be something to do with the massive chunk missing from the front tyre and the flat spot on the rim... Tempted to get some standard steels banded wider than 2B rims, could be funky.
New gearbox is doing well! So nice to be able to pull away without being terrified of it jumping out of gear.

This makes the pain of living with this sans heater/ working wipers/ door seals through the winter completely worth it.

Sorry! Made it public now, just a video to attest to how great Land Rovers are. Been stood a year, old diesel, old battery, started first turn.
Lightweight in the first pic is a series 3, drove down from Yorkshire to help weld the bulkhead up!
Yours looks cool - what's the plate out of interest? A friend of mine had one that might have ended up over your way.

AWESOME!! Glad to see this back, its one of my favourite Landies I don't own!
driving in rain, especially thunderstorms, with no roof is Awesome! stay above 30mph & you shouldn't get wet
(I keep threatening to take the hard top off my 88" S3 while the weathers good & replace the screen with one that doesn't leak!)

It's been a while, but who's that on the cover of LRM this month? Still love this thing the most - been nice to be back in it while the Capri's laid up. Few upgrades in the lighting department, a small loom fire and a mag feature - been a busy few months with it. Next on the list is a heater for the winter, and after that I need to start looking into a new turbo, this one's getting a bit wobbly... Naturally the new one needs to be bigger.

Well it's been a really, really long time but the Landy's getting some love. Just saw the 2017 resolutions thread and thought i'd update this. Still been in daily use, fairly trouble free bar a broken engine mount, but it's time to do what I always wanted to/ should've done. Something strange but familiar ended up in the boot and something noisy and rattly and smelly disappeared from the engine bay. Need to get this flywheel redrilled to fit a series clutch then the fitting can start - 9.35:1 Rover 3.9 on injection with Megajolt. I think it'll be quite brisk.

I'm not usually one to double post my own thread but i've just noticed none of the previous pictures work, fairly poor testament to something i've owned for 7 years and rebuilt twice! A brief recap as it's our anniversary today (aww) Bought it in 2009 from Nottingham for £1000 looking like a bit of a shed, 3 rotten crossmembers, a ropey bulkhead and a V8 and a lot of horrible bodges but it was one of the cheapest 80"s i've ever seen Stripped it Built it a new bulkhead, retaining the lower pressed section and footwells Liked it a lot and got it on the road looking not too dissimilar to this, running a 200tdi Used it for a bit then it got re-rebuilt on a galvanised chassis in a weekend Ran it like that for a while and kept tarting, discovered the original paint was underneath the rolled on green so took a lot of sandpaper to it Which then led to it getting featured in Land Rover Monthly And then back to standard life as a daily, helping me move house three times, take 7 mates from uni to and from football matches, gave transport for my mate's wedding, and generally just be a cool thing Which leads us more or less to the above post. It's been great, the TDI's done me well and was great returning 45mpg but I can't tolerate the rattles and noise anymore; hence a return to a nice smooth petrol engine...

Went and caught up with the old boy last weekend, definitely looking a touch forgotten about! Popped some 235/85/16 ATs on for a little extra grip and pulled the old gearbox out all ready for the recon unit and 3.9 going in over the next couple of weeks. Also started the chassis work... The state of that. Engine mount tore through the chassis a year or so back, so it was very much a bodge up but didn't realise it was that bad. 65 year old metal's definitely got a little thin. Still, 1/4" plate's gonna see to the insides of the rails nicely. Next up is to order all the bits I need to make it happen - got a shopping list as long as my arm. If it all goes to plan, might have some burbly noises coming out the back of it by the end of the month!

Not seen this thread before - now bookmarked! Love a series one. Brother has a 3, it's fun but nowhere near the charm of one of these in my view. Look forward to seeing the next stage of it's transformation.
Out of interest where did you source the recon gearbox for the 3.9 from? Searching for one for mine but hard to know sellers that are good and those to be avoided.
