My AX was having real problems starting back in September. Strangely it was always fine first thing but I kept having to push it to get it started and leave work. The managing director in full suit pushed me one day! Anyway, changed the battery, seemed to sort it. But no such luck. Took it to the garage. Turns out basically everything in the engine is way passed it. No care taken by previous owners. I've had it for 2 years. So just not possible to keep. Not possible to sell. Confession time! I was drawn to the scrappage scheme! Shame on me. Got one of these in October. This model and colour but not a pic of mine. It's a great little car and I got a 3,400 euros discount! Can't help feeling guilty though. Twas the only sensible option though as I couldn't fix it, sell it and needn't to get back some of the cash I poured into previous repairs. Hope to get a retro second car some time. Anyone else done the same?

Ha ha. I sold my "comfortable" 54 plate golf to buy an "uncomfortable" 24 year old work truck... And I wouldn't change it for the world! So yes my friend you have sinned! I know an ax isn't one, but imagin the real classics that damn scrappage scheme has claimed!

Agreed, it's what gives these cars character and that strange connection between man and machine. It makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. Ha ha. You know when you love your car, when everytime you lock the doors and walk away, you have to look back one last time. My golf was a lovely reliable car, but that's it. I'd sleep in the garage with the caddy! ;D

Yes, twice. My Beetle 1200 was never reliable until I sold it (I cured the problem then) but some cars do get the better of you. In some ways Akku's Mustang II reminded me alot of how the Beetle treated me. I sold that for a Focus with over the twice the mileage and a 1/4 of the age. I enjoyed both of the cars in all honesty but I did need access to a reliable car at that time, and once the Beetle bit me, it was not it. The one time I did not wish to do it was with my '89 944 S2. Whilst I did do a good chunk of work and get it running quite nicely my modern work hack was a cursed car from the off. The daily seemed mechanically it would never stay on tune thanks to a multitude of bodges (I did tell my dad it was too cheap!). Due to work having a cut off date on the age of the vehicle I opted for the 3.0 Mondeo Estate in my sig. It did not help when people told me how they liked the car. To be fair that Mondy took me to Wales and back very well in addition to Europe. Quite an underrated cruiser in a strange way and a great drive for a modern car in addition to being very practical (way more than most hatchbacks). However regret is the wrong word. After all, variety is the spice of life and well, hanging onto the old cars would not have let me sample cars I did not think I would own at times (the Stag being one of them . The key is not to look back at what you potentially missed experiencing but trying to look forward to what you can enjoy.

We sinned as well if its confession time. Bought an 08 focus diesel, mainly for my wife's commute as 60 miles a day for my pregnant other half I wanted something warm, comfortable & safe. I still use my 16 year old landcruiser as a daily though & starlets as toys.

I love retros, but I also love moderns and new cars, the main thing that stops me from buying a modern is not being able to work on them yourself, and seeing another the same as yours on every journey.
If it's a Renault sport twingo that youve got, I'm jealous! They're a right hoot to drive! One of the best small cars on the Market IMO.

one of my best mates did exactly the same thing, in fact he traded in for a twingo sport. In fairness to my mate he stripped everything from his old polo before it went. twas basically a rolling shell by the time he scrappage schemed it. Don't think he has much love for the twingo anymore, as it costs him too much money a month. Its actually now sat on his drive doing nothing and he is instead using a 20 year old pug 205.

I didnt scrap anything but in 2009 I bought a 1 yr old Hyudai I30 2.0D for running too and from work in. Car allowance paid for the finance and I had every conceivable luxury toy, warranty, 300lb ft of torque and over 40 MPG around town. The TR7 could come out to play on sunny days and the i30 for the rest of the time. This year I bought a very cheap VW T4 Carravelle. 17 years old, no MOT, no air con. I thought I could use it over the Summer and then flog it for a tidy Profit.
For sale - Hyundai i30 Premium 2.0 CRDi, reason - Lack of use in last 9 months!

I love retros, but I also love moderns and new cars +1 An easier statement would be 'I love cars'. ;D I've had a lot of cool retros in the past. My daily driver these days is an '02 Leon Cupra 20V T. I'm not ashamed of this.

That is not necessarily a sin... A sin would be if you had something rare that only needed a bit of work to keep it going and you couldn't be bothered so you scrappaged it...
I would call getting free money from the government for an old legless horse common sense... Still loving the Twingo??

Also I'm pretty much in the same boat as dbizzle and a few others. I've driven retros my whole life as daily drivers, my '78 Cav being the most used, but everything from Mini's, Fiat 126's, 20 yr old Land Rover Disco's, Early Mk2 Astra's, Baja Beetle's.... all sorts. I recently retired the Cav from daily service and bought a '09 Skoda Octavia VRS diesel. Awesome car, comfy, Audi reliability, Vw build quality, inducing torque and 40+mpg around town. Just needed a car for starting a family with, and the Cav ain't it. But now I'll just get to enjoy her on sunny weekends and give her all the more care and attention and that's no sin! At the risk of sounding all mushy and soft, if retro's still make your heart go "ooooh" and you feel like a child inside, then having a modern daily is no biggie. Enjoy it!

I bought a "modern" for the wife, an R reg escort, only had it 2 months and so far needed a new timing belt, fuel pump, and a bunch of relays, regretting it already, it's cost me more in parts than it did to buy my dail P100 OK it's not that modern but the newest car i've ever owned ;D

I am still loving the Twingo. Comfy and pretty nippy. Quite rare in vanilla white. Just love the reassuring feel of it. It's not the RS unfortunately, but the same 1.2l motor untuned.
The AX was just as fun to drive, up to 70mph. But 4-speed and 1l, it wasn't useable for long trips. And I was never completely happy safety-wise. I had a few nasty surprises, luckily discovered before a nasty end, with the whole braking system and others. Looked pretty clean but had been badly mistreated by the previous owners.
The main thing for me is that I had the AX for 2 years. French prices meant it cost me 850€ (!!!!) and I lost maybe 3 times that amount in repairs over the 2 years. Including 900€ just after purchase. Pretty curse word for a car with a 2 month old MOT!!!
This is the only way I get any money back for my troubles.
I probs could have stripped it more but didn't want to take too many risks with the smallprint in the contract.

I have to admit I have sinned as well. The Triumph though is still with me but is not currently performing daily duties due to it being to small in the back. As much as I really want a classic daily I can't afford to run one that is big enough at present. Although anytime I don't need to transport my bro +1 the Triumph comes out. Its still driven 4 or 5 times a week but this new thing is driven daily. I have named it Sandra as its a sand coloured Renault Scenic. I will admit though its really cheap to run and quite nice to drive when I get used to not having keys or a handbrake lever ;D
