ive just seen a very cool mazda 626 montrose sdx on the bay whilst looking for a daft retro runabout coz a) my Trekker is taking ages and b) I'm just bored of my daily the mazda is waaay outta my price range, I can only realistically blow 3 to 400 on "another car" so is it possible to buy a half decent retro that doesnt need oodles of welding and doesnt have mot? this all really started from John's Audi 80, which I love and made a cheeky offer on but was understandably refused, its just 1-200 outta my price range sadly I'm not being lazy btw, its just there are some jedi like skills on this forum when hunting down a cool ride so suggest away please cheers ;D

If I ever finished it off, I will have put a 1985 Skoda Estelle 120L5 on the road, with cool alloys, bucket seats, lowered and mot'd on the road for £200 all in.
Plenty of cars available in that price range with a bit of a hunt around, as long as you don't want a mk2 Escort Mexico or something equally unobtainable.

This thread has been done to death a couple of times previously.
Basically from what I recall, yes retro cars do exist for that sort of money, but if you want something remote desirable then you very well may have your work cut out. That and cheap cars are not as easy to come across as they once were (scrap value, cost of repairing simple items etc.)

It's possible. I paid £450 for the Princess I've got with 1 and a bit months tax and MoT until September. It's just mucky, and doesn't *need* any welding doing (but will need a patch later in the year, just to prevent the rust worms wiggling any further). If I weren't stuck with money tied up insuring the Polo I'd be out there using her every day already.
The secret? I put a note through the door and the buyer just wanted rid, I think, so got it for a great price. I'd seen stories of other folks doing the same thing but didn't think it actually happened, I now know it can.

D reg nissan cherry off this very forum, taxed and short tested, 35k from new and rock solid, easy to drop, wheels are 4x114.3 - 375 quid
I tend to find there are too many cars in this price range at the moment...

Almost on the road: b11 sunny breadvan, e36 tds, 325i skidcar,
nearly there: ford f250 tathauler, suzuki alto, u11 bluey
not for a while: ford pop, 32 rails,
not in this lifetime: ruby, '29 hillman

Old volvos. My last one was £200. My 460 Turbo was £425 from lumpyidle of this parish. It wouldn't take a great deal of work to make it mint. Some of my rarest and most unusual kit has been had in this price range. My rough but tested Piazza went for £400 on eBay, and my 305 Estate finished at a beer fuelled £206. With some rent supplied and classic insurance, it got me home from Norwich to Manchester and then promptly blew itself to pieces. As mentioned, it very much depends what you're after. Be open minded and you may find that rarity and condition are commensurate. An undesirable car in good or even mint condition could be had for the price of a 928 fuel pump. The Volvo is in regular use by my unit mate SCTSH_ANDY. Other than a clutch retaining bolt failing (a £5 special order via FRF Volvo) it has been an admirable piece of stand in transport. It's amusingly quick and yet anonymous enough to leave in some of the roughest parts of Manchester.

You will spend an eternity hunting if you set your heart on a specific car, in a specific price range. Be open minded, keep an eye on all the usual places and see what comes up

paid £50 for my polo mk3, T+T'd. just went straight through 2nd year MOT, only done rear brake cylinders, rear wheel bearings and a CV joint. i think £50 a year for bits is a cheap to run motor.

Lucky dude, we just got one at work for more cash to send round the oval. Thinking about it all my old cars from the last 5 years or so have been below this price with the exception of the cortina which was 425 IIRC

ok cars I have seen in the last couple months under £400. all had at least 3 months mot and some tax.
saab 900 (1987) (295) several micra k10s honda shuttle 1.4 (£300) plenty of peugeot 205s couple of mk4 escorts renault 5 suzuki swift (1987) £350
so yeah there are plenty of cars around in that budget, they just might not appear when you want them to haha
but looking at things like mk2 polos, k10 micras, that sort of stuff. and bigger engines tend to go cheaper.
wish I could find a nissan cherry for that budget near me. seen one drive past the other day and made me remember how much I oddly like them. ;D that and my jaw dropped that one was still going lol.

Go obscure and you'll be surprised at what you can find for very cheap.
