grunty has acted respectably and in good faith, he didn't know or intend, lets be clear on the theory and the actual in this thread
if the car was a minter when it was nicked, this could get tricky, if it was in a similar state to the pics on page 1, then hopefully for grunty, they didn't claim on the insurance, and an element of "i'm glad she didn't get bangered/scrapped" will prevail and a deal can be struck

moral off this story always buy car with logbook ?? WTF ?? What planet are you from? Just because a car might not have a logbook doesn't automatically mean it's stolen. I think you're generalising just a little bit too much there. I can guarantee you there are plenty of stolen vehicles out there with logbooks so you're holier than though "moral of the story" doesn't wash....Alan was unfortunate but that's exactly it, unfortunate. Log book or not. There are so many genuine cars out there without log books that need saving, if everyone listened to your 'wise' words then they would all be doomed. I bought a car a month or so back with no log book....it was a genuine purchase and if it turns out the lovely lady selling it is involved in some kind of stolen car racket then I'll happily give all my away. Please don't make speculative generalised statements like that without good reason. Sure, it does happen but that doesn't mean it happens every time. Some research, some common sense and general checks can minimise the risk but by no means is it a dead cert that any car without a V5 is going to get you in trouble with the law.... Al, gutted to hear the news buddy, really & truly gutted for you. After such an awesome & speedy revival and the amount of work you put it I can't begin to imagine how you must have felt when they gave you the news I really do hope you manage to reslove this, one way or another this car needs you and deserves you. I'm keeping my fingers well and truly crossed Amigo.

The story is not 'BS', we don't know who the registered keeper is, ok fair enough, i just wondered how it had what appears to be a long family back story if it was stolen 2 years ago. in any case the point of my reply i live in kent, possibly near the origin of this vehicle, if i can be of any practical help then PM me

Locked.
From what I can read in this thread Grunty is trying to do the right thing and is a victim in this, even is he is currently in possession of the car. In my opinion there is a big difference between someone who steals or knowingly receives a stolen car and someone who finds they have one through no real fault of their own.
I'm sure we'll re-open the thread when there's more news. Hopefully it'll work out for all parties.

'ang on, that's a paid-for tax disc on a '62? Presumably now it has a log book it can be taken to a VRO and put into the Historic class appropriately?

^^ correct! You have to buy one first, then claim it back, then it goes on historic (gawd knows why..)

So what was the outcome with the previous owner? Looking at the photo's at the start of the thread I don't see how you could be painted as anything other than the victim?

Awesome! This looked brilliant at the Beach Party, trying to fathom the column shift looked like great fun. And it's even better now that I've read the story and it has a happy ending ;D You must be made up.

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

ha, mr hardcore is on the ball Well yes DVLA made inquiries and are now happy so we have a logbook. I am currently liasing with Kent police regarding dodgy entries on the PNC and Genesis computers which should be cleared up this week. I wanted it taxed so I could move it and paying was the quickest way to get a disc, will now change class and reclaim -1 month. Hopefully before weekend I can bring her back out and do some repairs so I can drive it about and find out what else is wrong This has been a heart ache for me and I feel for the other guy, although I still do not know what the circumstances were surrounding the theft,or alleged theft, as due to data protection etc I was not involved in what ever communications he and DVLA had There is still a grey cloud floating around but for the time being I am happy to have rescued her from a very certain fragging which would have been a very sad end to a great car. The champagne we had on the beach will be nothing compared to the glasses we will raise when she is parked in a field next to Prescott hill climb on a certain weekend in August ;D Thanks to many for the support during this
