I've had a couple of free Mk3 Cavaliers (and one with T+T that cost £72!). Many of my cars have been sub £500, including my latest '99 Passat V5 estate with full MOT.
Depreciation seems to be the biggest expense in driving for most people, so I avoid it wherever possible by only buying cars that are worth at least as much in parts and weigh-in value as I pay for them...!

Over the years I've had 250+ cars and the vast majority were free, or even better I charged to remove them. These include Daimler DS420 limos and hearses, Rover P5bs, Jag XJs, XJSs and even a MK10, Volvos, etc, blah, blah. Most, if not all went round the track. Sorry about that, but all were not worth doing anything else with, and it was the 90's. Most of my dailies have been sub £200 (current ex-police Focus included). The best one I actually paid for is also the cheapest one in this thread so far! 1989 (F reg) Rover 800 Sterling 2.7 in BRG. Taxed and tested, FSH, 1 owner, fully loaded and no faults. £1 ;D That car served me well for a year and 25,000 miles before the autobox started slipping and I sold it to a Rover breaker for £200. Had a MK5 Cortina that I paid £40 for, that lasted 32,000 miles, and I bought a Montego 1.6LX from my exes car dealer housemate because it was cheaper than getting a taxi home, £30. Best result was a 1996 Jeep Wrangler I bought with rough running for £600. New TPS (had a spare) and 2 tyres (also already had), a quick wash and hoover and MOT, and sold it for £3800 on Ebay ;D

Sold within days for £85, from memory (it was about '96 or '97).

I think my best one ever was about 8 years ago - a guy rang the garage wanting rid of a Rover p6 V8 so I went over with the truck. He asked me how much and I offered £50, expecting to haggle upwards. He got his wallet out, and gave me £50 and the V5

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

I started my car career after scrap prices went up. My cheapest has been £200 for my 360, all it needed was a new gearbox. And lows This ^^^^ will put bay to a lot of you younglings getting the exceptional deals we got back years ago but sometimes it's worth scouring your local freeads to see what's about,I was home last week and there was an ad for a free astra 1.4 with snapped cambelt and no t&t,focus 2.0l with t&t for £50,worth keeping an eye out for. Another issue on free or scrap motoring is that years ago before the days of ANPR buying a car locally and driving it a few miles home negated the need for any legalities if you timed it right and drove sensibly,I got stopped once, explained to the copper I had literally just bought it,was covered in a roundabout way via 3rd party any car driving and was told to "get home sharpish",these days I'd be locked up in the tower of London for 300 years and the key thrown away. Still,if you got caught breaking and entering back then you went to prison so the cops did actually have some real work to do. ANYWAY. thread in hand: Fiat UNO 45s,dented wing/door,taxed/ticket,£100 in 1995,sold for £550 after buying the colourcoded parts for £40. E reg xr3i,£50,rotten but ran D reg xr2,£100,cost £100 to Mot etc but a cracking little car, pretty much rust free big regrets selling it!! Mondeo v6 estate,£100 straight through ticket guy thought engine was siezed, aircon pump was and preventing engine starting, cut belt, drove home, put aircon delete belt on,sold £250 a year later. Scorpio v6 e reg, free, put a battery on,drove home, pooped myself regarding fuel economy, sold that day £100 Scorpio frogeye Cossie, free, needed 2x lambda sensors so swapped for stihl strimmer and 2 mots. Astra estate,eBay bargain at £103 back about 10-11 years ago, still t&t and the fastest ever 1.4 car I've owned, saw 125 mph on my private test track home from work one day!!no idea what had been fettled under the bonnet but even moisture on the road saw tyres light in third??? E28 525e,free,boy told me the gearbox had gone as he pulled up to park, tax&long Mot,snapped gear selector cable,£5 from BMW,1/2hr to fit,job done. Sold cheap to mate for £150,another regret, nice clean car. Escort van,£100 for spares but actually better than the other van, needed 2x sill plate welded, about £40,buffed it to look mint, sold £450. Can't think of all the others but there's been a good few. If you've got even a slight bit of knowledge regarding basic car maintenance then bargain buys are the ones to go for, stick to 90's/00's stuff and generally you won't go too far wrong, particularly boring stuff as they tend to get looked after a bit better. Some people are of the mentality that the car goes to the garage and they just pay the bill believing that it's just the cost of motoring,I mean look at some of the stuff that turned up in the scrappage scheme,16000 mile Nissan micras like new, fiestas,ka's plus of course stuff aimed more at the retro rider such as old vw's,Vauxhalls etc,I saw a mint astra gte 16v at the local yard, that had to be worth £2000 but never mind. I've driven cheapish cars for years and not had a major breakdown in any of them,in fact I've had much more bother with newer stuff, and expense!!!just be prepared to get your hands a bit dirty, spend a few £££ on service stuff to keep it going and sort the probs before they occurr. Oh and if it's a ford, learn how to weld!!!

Whilst I've had numerous free cars the one that always stands out to me was a 1964 Sunbeam Rapier MKIV that I paid £20. 10 months MOT, good bodywork, mint interior, original bill or sale, under 20,000 genuine miles etc - but non runner due to duff condensor ! 5 year old breadvan Polo given to me by a neighbour also stands out. Totally abused, never serviced, every body panel badly dented, "hit and run" damage to front, broken engine mount and snapped gearchange shaft as well as interior full of water (battery tray rust : . Sorted out mechanical problems, fitted scrapyard wing and bumper to tidy up the bits that were hanging off, removed carpet and just had loose rubber mats. Ran that car for years as a "parts hauler", tip run, etc instead of messing up my XJ6 or wifes 1.6 LS Capri. Paul H

I actually didn't buy them.... Got a B3 Passat for free... Engine blew up on the autobahn. A year later I got a Micra K10 for free from my sister. Drove it for a 3/4 year andsold it for 450 ;D The cheapest I actually bought was my 250TD. Bought it for 530€ and soldit for 500 half a year and 20.000km later. And my 230TE breaker I bought for 200€, butthat doesn't count realy as it was not driveableanymorewhen I got it...

My Jag owed me £340 with 12 months test on, would have been less if I'd bothered to do the bits it needed myself. Miss that car. Blackboard paint and electrical tape added a tenner.

Bought a Mk 1 Astra back in 1996 for the grand sum of £45, needed some work but hardly let me down only through neglect. Sold it on a good while later for £40.

In the mid 90's I knew a guy who had a Mk1 Golf GTi. One night someone smashed the back window and nicked the spare wheel. The next night they came back and nicked the other four and left it on bricks. The cops came and said it had to be moved that day as it was causing a danger. The guy had no means of moving it so I offered him the contents of my wallet - £25- he said yes so I went home and took the wheels off my own Mk2 Golf GTi and brought it home. Spent £50 on a rear window and some steel wheels from the breakers and put it in Autotrader the next week and sold it for £550 ;D
Haven't been that luck since though!
