5dr/estate fast low tax cars for a under 1k ?

Ok petrol heads looking for idea's
I not happy with my 1.6 avenger estate or 1.4 orion need something with a bit more go power.
So looking for pre 1991 (classic insurance)
Under 1549cc (cheap road tax)
Somethig that will return 26+ to the gallon (as thats what I get from mine round town).
Petrol or diesel
Standard car don't mind small mods like boost gauge or bigger fuel pumps
preffer estate (but consider large hatch or saloon)
suggestions please

civic shuttle 1.4 GL would get my vote. they've got about 90bhp if my memory is correct, do 40 MPGish and go well

Rover 214 hatch/414 estate? There are two versions of the 1.4 K series - one with ~85bhp and one with ~100bhp. IIRC the only difference is the throttle body.

Daewoo did a 1500 which was about as big as you could get while staying in the lower tax bracket. But it's in a Daewoo.

Might be easier to just "swallow" the higher road tax as it would open up a far bigger choice. Realistically the difference £220 - £135 = £85 a year or and extra £1.64 per week.

road tax is why I'm going to sell the Avenger. if it was lower tax bracket id keep it pay enough tax I only do about 2000miles a year between 2 cars as there both secondary and just depends on where I'm going or what mood I'm in. avenger has sound system, orion has tow bar lol

you could swallow the high tax bracket and buy a Volvo turbo for 500 quid, will work out cheaper and is MUCH bigger if your looking for load carrying and towing ability, 190bhp simply by fitting an MBC.

no swollow tax having to shed out more as have to buy my GF a bigger car and pay her increased insurance and road tax as I bought a caravan and will need to sell her car and buy a bigger one (modern) looking at going from a cheap astra dti to a more expensive mondeo tdci at mo. so trying to keep outgoings the same.

Admittedly mine is an auto, but I suspect a manual one wouldn't be that much quicker than an Orion 1.4 TBH. However don't let that put you off, great little cars.

If it's the same as the Metro the lesser bhp 1.4 k-series are only single point injection, the 103ish bhp models were multipoint.

A 414 goes really well IMO for a car of it's size and the engine.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but pretty much all of these cars are going to be pretty slow. You're looking for something, old, cheap and economical with a small engine. You're just going to have to get used to going slow. Whether you've got 70hp or 100hp, you're still in a 1600cc wagon, which is never going to be fast, especially with a load in it. My advice would be to keep the cars you have, as it's better the devil you know. On a tight budget and buying cheap cars, the cost of unexpected repair bills to fix a minor fault with your new car will far outweigh any savings on road tax.

What about fitting a 1.5 Isuzu diesel out of a Corsa with a Manta gearbox into the Avenger then getting DVLA to drop road tax band ?

The Metro spi was 8v - all the 16v engines were mpi. Two outputs in the 414 were 95bhp and 103bhp, with the difference in the TB.

what youre looking for doesnt exist.

no one makes fast cars under 1500cc, cos theyd be so highly strung theyd blow up every week.

the few kei-car exceptions are tiny two seaters, and more like 1000cc. suzuki cappucino for example.

were the only market that has the 1500cc tax break, everywhere else is 1600cc, hence most manufacturers starting at 1600cc.

people who buy small estate cars (which are an oxymoron in themselves) buy with pretty much one thing in mind- economy.

as such, i can think of two suggestions.

polo estate- only made 94-99 though. you can theoretically get one with any engine from the polo range in, including the 1.4 twin cam. in reality youll only find em with miser-spec 1.4 petrols with 40 less hp, and diesels, which are over 1500cc.

the only thing i can think of that really fulfills your criteria is a 1500 lada estate. not that quick, but not massively slow either. around 80hp factory, good enough and easily tunable. fits all other critera well.

tbh though, if you want a fast wagon, you go and and buy a bmw, merc, alfa, or even a passat. they're all truly 'fast', fulfill all your other critera, and are bloody good with it (except the alfa). and not get all funny about 80 quid a year extra in tax. if 80 quid a year means that much to you, it sounds like the lada will suit you perfectly.........
