I'm getting bored of my '05 Focus and thinking about something old and daft - probably some sort of 80's barge, but it'd have to pay it's way a bit. So, my question is has anyone got their car on the books of FilmCars or one of the other companies that provide cars to productions and what can you tell me about it?

I wouldn't bank on earning much if any money from that source. But an older car will 'pay its way a bit' in the lack of depreciation compared to a modern.

The requirements are few and far between, the reward is usually pretty poor, and you run the risk of having your pride and joy damaged.
Of course, any damage would be repaired at the company's liability, but I wouldn't expect to make more than beer money every now and then.

Mate had a mint WWII Jeep wrecked by film company. They sprayed it with a mud substitute that ruined all the paint and interior. Add quite severe dents and it needed a total body restoration. No problem getting the film company or their insurers to cough up the costs but he vowed never to hire any of his vehicles again. I've heard similar stories from others and it's only those owners that actually drive the car themselves that can guarantee it stays safe.

I think it's quite tricky to make real money from this, although the guy who owns Alfie's Capri in EastEnders probably sees a few quid. That's in there pretty much every episode!

Chances of your car actually being selected for use are thin, and chances of it being used on a regular basis, even thinner. If you want it to pay its way, you're better having something that could double-up for wedding hire. Most wedding hire cars are old Rollers and Daimlers, kitcar Royales, etc. I know a guy who made a few quid with a Heritage kitcar in that style. I've seen some guys advertising cars for use as groom's car (i.e. the flash motor in which he rocks up to the ceremony ), but I don't know if that's greatly successful. Are you friendly with anybody in that business? If you're enterprising, is it worth asking them if they'd be interesting in some sort of arrangement and what sort of car?  ? |

Don't jump in on the wedding thing yet as the glorious government want to implement taxi style tests and licences which will render the monetary gains somewhat slender compared to how it all works now...!!!
As for film/tv hire I hear it can be quite profitable but only rarely, it is not a consistent money maker and you really won't end up holding that much folding...

I have had my fasty on the books of a film rental agency for 6 years and had one job. I did earn £150 for the morning and they paid for the broken copper brake pipe after the presenter ran off the track and into the grass.
Money aside, I did get a good wee film of my car out of it;

Why would the older car have to pay it's way? That doesn't make any sense. Your Focus doesn't have to earn you money.

sold my vitara a one off vehicle to a fil company because i didnt want to hire it out and them wreck it
they agreed to buy it at one pounds more than my asking price due to it being a one off they couldnt get another one short notice
paid out in cash
came to collect it and asked only two questions
is it petrol or diesel
manual or auto
what a way to sell a car
no tyre kicking just crispy fifty pound notes from a nice production lady from film company
stress its just a one off thing
cant see real money in it
maybe photo shoots but don't know much about that even though i work in a related industry my customers are more party people at heart

Er, check out my signature!! Cars are well looked after, and you should get a fair rate with the right company. I always asy though, don't look at it as a living, just a way to fund your car. You will either get your insurance or your road tax paid for, or both, but won't get rich on it!
