Do any of these gearbox oil additives actually do any good? Any first-hand experience of any particular brands? Or is there a decent gear oil which will ease the situation? The manual gearbox in my Patrol is difficult when cold, being particularly hard to select 2nd - it'll graunch and go in, or just not even select at all. It's fine when warmed up, but now winter's here I've been having to either block-shift from 1st to 3rd, or double clutch into 2nd for the first few gearshifts. I don't believe there's a fault with the gearbox - they're quite known for cold gear baulking - and there's only 90k on the clock so I doubt there's excessive wear. I'm sure syncro wear probably isn't helping, but still. I'm going to change the oil to see if it helps, but I'm not sure whether to stick something like regular GL-4 spec 75w90 in, a more fancy synthetic oil, or regular stuff and an additive. Any ideas?

Drain a litre out and top up with ATF That seems a nice simple, cheap solution! I take it that the ATF thins the gear oil?

i'd suspect just changing the gearoil for the recomended grade will made a huge difference! Gearbox oil (and diff) always seems to get forgotten come service time.

Thanks for the replies / advice. I've read on Aussie forums that Redline MT-90 synthetic gear oil works well, so I think I'll give that a whirl. It's a bit pricey but will hopefully solve it, or at least ease it a bit.

Another vote for MT90 hear. Use it in Triumph saloon box and Supra 5 speed - improved the change on both. Try Opie oils - more reasonable than some places!

if your gearbox takes 75w90, stick 10w40 engine oil in! Its the same range, but should be much thinner when cold.

If you want something a bit cheaper, try the Total BV 75w-80, it's about £12 for a couple of litres.

My volvo used to jam in the cold, I changed the oil for the same recommended stuff and it cured!

Just renewing the oil may improve things substantially.

I hate coming across tech questions that have no conclusion on the internet, so I thought I'd update this one. I changed the gear oil for Castrol Syntrans 75w90 fully synthetic today and it's made a real difference. The oil that came out was very clean so I reckon it wasn't that old - evidently the baulking wasn't due to tired oil.
The shifts from cold are much better - no double clutching into 2nd now. I'll not get too carried away, as I've yet to try it in sub-zero temperatures but it's definitely improved things.
While I was under there, I did however find a leak from my transfer case... these old cars keep busy don't they?!
Thanks for the replies, fellas.
