Hi Guyz Just wanted to tell you i have just taken over the running of the Bangernomics Forum that was originally started by James Rupert from Autocar The whole original concept of Bangernomics was buy a car for under £1k and run it into the ground but i feel over the years the concept of Bangernomics has changed and with this in mind i approached James and offered to help with the Forum having run another forum myself in the past when involved in the Mini Scene. The Forum has been quite up to now despite being there for some 6 years but i feel that was in some ways it was very much off radar many not even realising it existed :crying: Myself and my Tech is currently Revamping the current Forum and it will be down for maintenance from tomorrow morning until Friday morning 1st February 2013 New way of thinking if your car cost you under £2k and you run it on a shoestring budget and would rather drive an old car that drag a drip drip finance plan around with you then Bangernomics is for you Please feel free to Join and if you are already a member come back and take a fresh look Please don't be put off by the jumbled up look of things tonight it will be more vibrant with more sections on re launch Click on my Sig to take you there and just remember it will look totally different from the current format come Friday Jodie

I loved Bangernomics! Great to see it back. I've been running hacks for my commute to work on the bangernomic principles for the last 15 years!

Personally i always thought the term bangernomics was a bit off what with the £1000 budget, and upping that to £2000 is getting more into "use and look after". For me, a term like 'bangernomics' would mean a car at around £500, especially if the aim is to just use it until it dies.

For me, a term like 'bangernomics' would mean a car at around £500, especially if the aim is to just use it until it dies. I suppose this is up to each individuals perception also. Personally I think it depends a lot on how long you keep the car. If a car costs £1500 and you run it into the ground over a 10 year period compared to a £500 car you run into the ground over 3 years, it works on the same principle? I think in recent years as well car prices have changed dramatically. 4-5 years ago I would have been able to have had a taxed and tested car on the road and usable for my daily commute for about £200 - i've had a few. These days you're looking at 500 quid just for MOT and then because of the tax & insurance regulations you have to tax it on top. I know that there are still some sub 500 quid runabouts out there, but when I was considering one recently I really struggled to find anything for less than £350 quid that had a half decent MOT on it (most were due to run out within 4-6 weeks. I did limit it to my local area (20 mile radius) but to be fair I'm not going to travel the country for a £300 car. 4 years ago I bought a Volvo 440 with 6 months MOT for £100!). They were also absolute wrecks too, where in the past I've had some good nick cars for next to nothing.

There's no right or wrong within reason There are a lot of great cars out there up to £2k i guess i just had to set a limit and there's members who have cars just over £1k If you can buy and run a car for a few hundred we welcome you too ;D But buying a car for a couple of thousand and keeping it long term rather than falling onto the drip drip that is finance is still Bangernomics There are different levels and definitions of Bangernomics and wherever you fit in doesn't really matter your still very welcome ;D

That is the concept it started with sub £1k but as jk667 said things have changed hence the £2k limit just to make it fair for those slightly over We may change it later but we don't want to alienate members who went out and bought a car for £1050 There will also be a For Sale and wanted section and we wanted to set a level for classifieds so £2k it is and we will see how that goes

Agreed there are still some around, but prime example, £400 car that is fine, its bloody miles away from me. Few years back there were numerous examples of such cars at such prices in every town. I was really annoyed about a fortnight ago, I saw a cracking Corsa on North Yorkshire Gumtree. It was £395 with decent T&T, only a 1 litre but in good nick would have been ideal for my daily commute tbh to save a few quid in fuel etc. Location said York, so about 1hr drive and thought to be fair, with the other half giving me a lift it would work out okay especially if I could knock a few quid off, rang up and the bloke said he was actually in Halifax which is a fair bit further away. No way was that extra hour travelling worth it for 395quid car! I think in term of a lot of the cars people on this forum drive though the Bangernomics principle probably still work. Mine cost less than £1000 each (£1500 in total actually!) and although I don't run them on a total shoestring budget (they want for nothing I just shop around for best prices and use second hand items where fit/appropriate then do as much of the maintenance myself to save garage costs) I feel my usage probably falls into Bangernomics territory. Either way, I'm a member of that forum, its dead to the world which is a shame and I look forward to the re-launch. The more the merrier 2k budget or not

If the £2k budget includes the initial home repair + servicing work that realistically anyone sensible would be expecting such a purchase to need in order to be reliable, plus the road tax, then it's probably not far off right?

2 grand would cover the cost of my last 6 cars and I've made money on every one. If you buy a car for 2 grand you've still got 2 grand to lose if it breaks. There are still loads of sub £500 quid cars around, you've just got to be prepared to travel. I bought the Multipla of Emdee on here for 400 quid with tons of tax and test. I'm in Leeds, he's in Caterham, Surrey. Total travel costs to get down there were less than 15 quid, including a sarny, couple of packs of crisps and a couple of cans of pop.

Three years ago I bought a '97 Honda Civic for the equivalent of a little over £300. Its rusty, but very trusty, and luckily we have nothing like the MOT in my part of the US. I've put about 50,000 miles on it since I got it.

Different things for different folks But as a fair few have said, Apart from my Cortina, every car Ive had has been below a grand, usually the 3 - 500 quid mark £2000 for me would be a bloody new car!! I see myself as cutting edge car design but ten years in the past My current hack , the Forester, with all the bells n whistles £650 Mighty bargain

I've driven from Edinburgh to London in a car I bought for...£200. Anyone who says a bargain car is too far away is simply trying to talk themselves out of buying it.

Agree with a lot of the above, £2k is not a banger. There are a lot of very decent 90's and early 00's cars around for under £1k that have many years of life left in them. I don't think that I have spent more than £1k on a car since the eighties. Currently I have a 98 Merc C Class estate that was bought for £1k five years ago. It has never gone wrong, never had more than regular servicing and never failed an MoT. I doubt that it has cost me more than £50 a year in servicing costs. In fact filling the petrol tank just once costs more than a years worth of servicing!!
Bangernomics is all about buying wisely and running wisely. £2k is a LONG way from banger territory. Sorry Jodie, you are completely out of touch with the concept of running a banger.

FWIW, I agree with the £2k threshold being out of banger territory. I don't even consider myself as operating under bangenomics yet I almost never spend even £1k on a car. Used cars are really cheap these days, pobably cheaper than they were 20 yeas ago. I remember paying up to £500 for old bangers in the late 80's and you can still but an MOT'd car fo that now!

Buy a car for 2k is not bangernomics in my eyes, the only way I'd ever spend 2k on a motor is if I'd won some money at some point and want to buy something special.
