I would say that I've run my cars on 'Bangernomics' principles for my entire life, not by choice but because I've been a Uni student up until now and haven't had the money for a modern car. So far, the newest car I have owned was built in 1990 and I've never taken out a loan to buy a car, but I've always made a profit on every car I have owned. I do all my own servicing and repairs, using used parts wherever possible, so running costs have been extremely low. Despite being a huge car enthusiast, and enjoying every car I have owned, I have spent less money on cars than anybody else I know. I bought my first Beetle, a 1970 1500cc, for $300 with no rego and bald rear tyres. $150 for a pair of cheap tyres and a few hundred dollars of rego later, I was on the road for about $700. That car lasted me several years of motorsport and was used as a daily driver for a couple of years before I wrote it off. Over the years I repaired the rust on the bonnet and painted it, replaced the rear shocks ($150), changed the wheels and tyres ($450) and upgraded to a 1600cc twin-port engine ($750). I sold the 1500cc engine, fuel tank and a few spares for the original purchase price of the car, and re-shelled all the other good bits (including the 1600cc engine) into my next Bug. Hopefully that gives people a rough idea of what things cost in Australia. Please note that I'm lucky enough to be in South Australia, where we have no roadworthy inspections of any kind, so you can drag any old car out of a paddock and register it.

I always was under the assumption that bangernomics was about risk free motoring I.e. you buy cars that are <£500 so that in the event of an expensive failure/repair being required you can sell a few bits off if, weigh the rest in and lose a small amount of money. A 2 grand car is right in the wrong price range for a car to be to fit the bangernomics principle as it is too expensive to write off if something catastropic goes wrong. Say you buy a car for 2 grand. 18 months down the line something breaks and you're faced with a 500 quid repair bill. The car in GWO is now only worth 12-1500 quid due to depreciation. You can't just scrap it, as then you're 2 grand down, but if you repair it you've then got 2 1/2 large in a car that's worth £12-1500, so you're still a grand down. Bangernomics is always about buying cars at the bottom of their depreciation cycle. Most cars with MOT and tax don't go much below £400, but aslong as you keep them MOT'd and taxed they'll be worth £400 if you want to sell. If something breaks and its a big repair bill you'd get at least £200 back from weighing it in, and if you pull a few bits off first its easy enough to at least break even and usually turn a profit on them. I'd say this is spot on. Rather than £500 as an example, I've always seen it as being as much as you can afford to lose in a worst case scenario.

I'd be inclined to re-focus the way you are publicising it then. Mentioning the £2k value seems to have elicited a huge amount of negative response, probably even to the point of putting people off of joining. In fact I suspect that it puts doubt into many peoples minds that you really understand the concept of bangernomics. If I were in your position I'd be asking a forum moderator to pull this thread completely and then I'd start all over again. You can please some of the people some of the time but not all of the people all of the time This thread has also highlighted that depending on where you live in the world even £2k+ can still be Bangernomics. As i have said £2k is the limit but its not written in stone its a ballpark figure and people who know they run a Bangernomics car know who they are and identify with Bangernomics so why not come check it out anyway The problem is if i hadn't of set that maximum limit (remember its a limit not an aim) somebody would of come along with a car they payed for or are selling for over £2k There had to be a limit.

i paid £395 for my last fiat marea weekend 2.0 20v hlx (top of the range don't you know lol) needed some tlc, a good clean, got given some leather seats and popped them in, flew through the mot (well just needed new rear pad but only £60, fitted a cheap steering wheel changed the springs on my drive £80, then my tyres started looking very bald, so i sold the wheels for £60 and paid £200 for a set of team dynamics 17" with good tyres, never let me down all electrics worked perfectly sounded awesome went like stink... this is what it was like when i sold it oh and i sold it for £750 lol then i added £250 more and bought a 53 plate fiat stilo jtd dynamic estate, full cream heated leather, digital climate control, massive sunroof, upgraded wheels, costs me £135 to tax a year and does 55mpg although i did have to go to birmingham twice to get it from essex was a fun couple of journeys, all i have done so far is get the tracking done and put some new tyres on the front, flew through teh mot (full detailed history with all the major bits done) i see this as a new car.... its no way a banger

I would find it very interesting to see how people outside the UK do this in comparison with ourselves. after watching that old top gear US special about buying Yanky motors for less than a grand, and finding how hard it was I would be intrigued to see how overseas retro fans get on with theirs If you liked that, you'll love Roadkill on YouTube. It's a couple of Hot Rod magazine guys that present it, it's produced by Hot Rod and Motor Trend so the focus is on big 'ol yank tanks.

I'm not arguing just seeing it how life is. forget the 2k thing even my MK 4 cossie cortina hits the 2k target ~(just) !!! Like I said before my old dear wouldnt even spit at owt near 2k its about the love for old cheap wagons You need to love retro's and have the love to keep them going and all who read this do

My seven daily drivers over the last seven years or so have cost me £1400 in total, and grossed me about £750 when i sold/baled them. My last Xantia cost me £225, needed a breather pipe replacing, did that, flew through the MOT a couple of months later. Ran it until the bottom end started knocking, sold the wheels/tyres/battery for £50, put the rest over the bridge and got £205 back. 14000 miles and I ended up £30 up!
Even the Benz only stands me at about £550 after buying it and sorting a couple of niggles. If it fails the MOT on anything spectacular it'll get the same treatment if no-one wanted it as-is.
You can do it on a complete shoestring, as long as you're not bothered what you drive.
