Cracking thread, enjoying your updates. Just one thing though, the lower wishbone chassis brackets tend to shear off!!! I've had to repair 3 Scimitars with collapsed front suspension & the wheels hanging off (these were all just standard road cars being driven normally). Maybe an idea to replace those brackets with beefed up items if you're gonna be chucking it about?

Two very nice Scim's there sir, lovely stuff...! Thanks, the coupe isn't much at the moment but it'll nice when it's done Cracking stuff. Thanks for taking the time to post. I'll have a proper read of your thread on scimitar web. I'm very interested to hear that you didn't bother to replace the metal inside the sills. I've not heard of that before (but not done much reading to be honest). It's great to see someone who must have felt as lost as I do now get cracking on with the GRP repairs. I'm at a bit of a loss of where to start but I think your posts have given me something to work from. Did you find any good reading material on the subject? Cheers! Thanks, I didn't bother with putting new steel in there as the theory is, Reliant only put the steel in there to brace the GRP while the resin was curing when the bodies were made. I know a few people that just replaced with several layers of GRP and they've been fine. I was really scared about cutting into the body but realised its the only way so just got the angry grinder out There's one really good book on fibreglass by (I think) Miles Wilkins or something. It's now out of print and quite expensive though. Cracking thread, enjoying your updates. Just one thing though, the lower wishbone chassis brackets tend to shear off!!! Thanks, the car had replacment brackets in the 90s then wasn't driven till I bought it so they should be ok for now. It'll be one of those things that I'll just buy if some cheap ones crop up Anyway, small update tomorrow as there's been a little bit of progress with the GTE

It's been quite a while since the last update so this one's going to be quite I long one I'm afraid The GTE passed its MOT with no advisories so that was a nice thing to get out the way, just in time for the national Scimitar meet at Curborough where the car spent 1 and a half days on track and then an afternoon of autotesting Curbs highlighted quite a few things: My new roof rack - absolutely brilliant; it didn't fall off though it was a little noisy at motorway speeds and it caused even more debate/arguing/general conversation that I thought, especially from people who watched it on track on the test day Brakes - very pleased with them but they need a little fine tuning to get them perfect. (See page 6, where new vented wilwoods were fitted) Tyres - confirmed that they're well past it. New tyres now sorted, see below. Suspension - works well and managed to make it better with some adjustment but it needs some tuning. After getting some advice off one of the guys, I'll probably get some stiffer springs as the car bounces around a lot on straight roads. Clutch - fine at the moment but might need replacing next year (I don't think the autotest helped ) but it's a nice easy job to do so I'm not fussed about it. Competitiveness incase I want to sprint next year - even after new tyres, an LSD and proper suspension tuning I know I won't be able to get anywhere near what one of the guys can get out of his 5a so I may be better off sticking with the car I already use next year. Reliability - this car is absolutely BRILLIANT driving to curbs and back and being thrashed for two days solid (apparently I don't have any mechanical sympathy but surely if something breaks, it was faulty anyway ) and the only problem was 1 wire fell off the starter motor. I even did 2 autotest courses running on five cylinders after a plug lead came off. The engine still ran great, the only symptom was a lack of power hence why it took us two runs to think there was something up Thanks to yet another very kind Scim owner, I've finally replaced the old tyres (with some T1-Rs). As good as they looked, they were cracked and I pretty much finished them off over the Curbs weekend. I also really need to sort the exhaust manifolds out properly. Even though the front shocks are set to higher than standard height, the manifolds hit most speed bumps and occasionally through dips in the road. I was going to live with it but after Cholmondely we were pulling out uphill onto a fast busy road near a blind bend and got totally beached half in the road. I thought the manifolds had snapped and the noise it made was so big someone came running over thinking we'd crashed. We had to get 4 people to lift the front end while I reversed back down. We then did exactly the same 5 mintues later over a bridge. My plan is to chop the collectors off and cut the primary that goes underneath the other two and re route it so the pipes run three abreast and fit new collectors to suit. This will allow the front end to be lowered AND the car to get over proper speedbumps. I also think the nearside headgasket has gone a bit. There's quite a lot of water being spat out the NS exhaust but nothing out the OS. I'll investigate that next week. The car leaks in a tiny bit (nothing really but I may as well try and get it as good as possible) so I bought some smoke pellets a while ago to try and see everywhere where there wasn't a good seal. It indeed confirmed the car leaked and all the places it occurs So the places it leaks: Passenger quaterlight (no suprise) but water never actually seems to get through and I like the feature so I won't bother sealing it up Passenger door seal at the bottom of the B pillar - can probably be solved by adjusting the door catch as the door sits proud of the body when closed Drivers side rear window in the top front corner - will try and get some sealant in there Drivers door A LOT around the top rear corner - the problem seems to be that the window frame flexes a bit so doesn't push against the seal as much as the other side. I've heard the door frames are a pain to mess with so I might try and push the seal out a bit more by wedging something between the seal and the body (the car already has new door seals) Very effective, this was a couple of seconds after lighting a pellet The packet had a warning for them being irritant but I wasn't sure if it meant the smoke or the pellets and didn't really want an interior covered in itchy residue but I decided to try it and find out seems fine after a bit of air freshener And to finish off, my favourite photo of the car:

Very long time, no post. Not too much has happened, just some interior trimming. The main list of things includes: Homemade alcantara headlining New roll bar and C pillar vinyl coverings New radio antenna and speakers New carpet Bitumen sound deadening throughout Closed cell foam sound deadening throughout Stainless nuts and bolts for the seats and seatbelts New dashboard Refurbed the heater matrix, valve and blower motors Rear windows taken out and re sealed New hatch seal I did this over Christmas - probably the worst time to be doing an interior retrim with no windows in the car when it lives outside but it had to be done. My passed my driving test last week and I've already out over 100 miles on the car. It's absolutely brilliant it seems to win the most interesting car award in the college car park too Anyway, the photos Also, my new favourite photo, curtesy of sporting-reliants.com

Quite possibly not worth posting here but I may as well post some kind of update. I passed my test in February and I've been using the car as a daily since. No real problems other than my job not earning as much as I need to spend fueling the car Nothing ground breaking, just a few bits and bobs such as rebuilt brakes MX5 seat installed Engine had a few bits done on it and made shinier Engine bay repainted The bumpers and headlamp surrounds plastidipped in satin grey and the surrounds were given eyebrows And I bought another one

Fantastic car, a real credit to you.
Air ride sounds interesting, a good solution to the ground clearance issue.

Know the feeling of posting lots and no-one responding. Any updates on this?
To be honest, I would've kept the chrome instead of the plastidip. Looks way cleaner. And I think the tyres should have a higher profile again...

Sorry to disappoint everyone but part of the reason I didn't update this was because I had to sell the air ride kit. I was partly forced by my dad but at the end of the day, as an 18 year old student who has to have two jobs just to afford the petrol for the car, I couldn't justify spending over £1000 on air ride, especially as it was only going to be a basic setup with no computers. I had bought pretty much everything including compressor, tank, solenoids and pipe but I bottled it and sold everything bar the solenoids. I even test fitted them Having said (and done) that, this car WILL be on air ride one day. I just couldn't justify it right now. Know the feeling of posting lots and no-one responding. To be honest, I would've kept the chrome instead of the plastidip. Looks way cleaner. And I think the tyres should have a higher profile again... Don't worry about the tyres, I'm back on 205/60/15s now. I partly agree with you on the bumpers but there was a method behind the madness. The car is now fitted with fibreglass front bumpers so they had to be painted in some sort of colour. Black was the obvious choice but I think the contrast with the yellow is a little sharp so settled on the pearlescent grey. Since the last update, the car hasn't had much work done but it is driven every single day for work and college with a few drives too. It was part of Jack Mason's 12 of twenty16 project It also attended the Manchester show The clutch release bearing was changed over an evening and the next morning before college And it's become the work horse for moving my rebel and it's parts around

Did they make left hand versions of this car? I just love it, even the colour! So much win!
Kinda makes me feel like my 924 is just boring. Keep going!
- EDIT - Why the bumper-swap?

That's a really nice car you have there mate.
Shame about the air ride, but your better off leaving it for now and doing it when you have a bit more spare money to do it properly/ not be forced to cut any corners!

Cheers guys Yes, they did make some LHD Scimitars but they are rather rare. Most of them are in The Netherlands and France. The bumper swap was simply because I acquired the fibreglass bumpers and thought there'd be less chance of them getting damaged on the car than under a pile of rubbish in the garage A Rebel is the dinky little red thing on my trailer. They're one of the rarer Reliants as there's only 20 odd still on the road. There's some more on it in my other thread retrorides.proboards.com/thread/185157/73-reliant-rebel-estateHopefully, there will be some more interesting posts as I'm currently planning a European roadtrip including some Nurburgring action with a fellow Scim owner, so that should be fun. In the mean time, this other Scimitar may be of interest to some. Me and my dad compete in the Scimitar club hillclimb championship and have bought a new car for this season. Currently running 220bhp but we're fitting a two stage boost control to be able to switch between 200 and 250bhp depending on track conditions

So I just have to take a look out for one. By the way, I like your car, and your story (read through all your threads). Bump me a message if you really hit the Nordschleife, I may have a surprise for you. The track car seems interesting!
