So I’ve finally got round to starting a build thread after lurking on here for a year or so a quick word of warning,
THIS IS NOT FOR THE MGB PURIST
I’m Mike, these are three of the previous cars iv owned
This was my first car when I was 19, 1991 BMW e36, I bought the car in July started work on the rear end immediately and then couldn’t get hold of matching paint, so rattle canned it matt black, had it on the road for about 4 months and decided that the absolute fortune I was paying for insurance and fuel was stoopid!
So I started looking around for something cheaper. I remember my parents mentioning cars they had when they were younger my Mum drove a Beetle and My dad had a collection of MG B’s straight away I was hooked on the Beetle and went to check a few out, had the money ready for a Bugged out beetles with cronic dish and lowered but Evil bay wouldn’t let the guy cancel it so he ended up selling it for less than I offered??? : S anyway
I moved onto MG Bs and after finding a gem in Sunderland decided to take a trip up there to check it out, I had a look around the car whilst nursing a hangover and wasn’t too convinced due to the dirty rubber bumpers! I looked underneath and Saw how solid it was slightly more convincing. And then….
I got inside…..
Biggest smile in the world, I had no insurance so my dad got in and drove it up the road with me passenger, I couldn’t believe it.
So needless to say the car was sold, we drove it back and halfway home even the overdrive started working, these are a couple of shocking pictures of the car on the day I got it back,
Modifications soon commenced and the bumpers were ripped off, I then spent some time fixing up all the little niggles and had issues with the starter motor and gearbox, I don’t have many pics of these times tho,
Anyway it wasn’t long before the Front Tyre’s got bald and me driving like an absolute warrior in the rain lead to an askident involving a stoop-idly placed cylindrical piece of metal holding up a light. Damaged wasn’t too great, and I suppose it was an excuse to buy a fiberglass bonnet! and it got me to buy a proper grill,
anyways the car progressed with crazy lows at the rear end (86mm down from stock) making the 20mm drop up front look non existent, I rolled around like this for a while,
And then like this,
AND WHO SAYS MGBS ARNT PRACTICAL!!!
Ahh was really starting to come together, just bought a set of sebring wings for it and about to Respray the bonnet and wings get them nice and shiny and then
Bam, Alfa Romeo to the nose
(Drove through a set of traffic lights that were hidden by a sign a bus and a pub I actually couldn’t see one light apart from a local petrol station which displays its petrol price in a green led light incidentally at the same height and position a traffic light should be…. Sure iv got a case here)
push comes to shove and a lot of arguing in court after being set to lose my license for the second time I managed to scrape away with 5 more points (totaling 11) and a hefty fine
Anyway, the car
Completely toasted the chassis rails and what was once straight, was now bannanafied, judging it too stooped to repair I broke it and started selling for parts,
I was gutted, started looking at insurance quotes on different stuff as I always said I would never own the same car twice, however I will never go back to a FWD project car so this limited me to pretty much all the expensive insurance stuff, I looked at a few midgets but kept going back to the B,
After a few months scouring the internet I came across an advert on eBay for few cars in a lock up for £250 each, biting the bullet I went to see the lock up 120miles away and had a look over THE 9-10 MG B’s that were there, and after the missus constantly shouting she wanted the blue one, £250 later I had this
[
OHH AND WE COULDNT GET THE engine started straight away so used the only car we had suitable for towing to get it up the drive
It was a shed inside panels missing and the engine bay was grim (still is a bit) but after a clean and swopping around of panels I had from the previous car, she looked alright!
It started out again with burning those terrible rubber bumpers, and me sourcing a set of Sebring panels from a local guy as I had sold the last ones, as this one was of the road for about 7 years I decided that I’d give it a once over before getting it back on the road, and get the Sebring arches on as I never ha chance to with me needing the car every day.
Fitted a sub: P and some 6x9s to tie me over until I fix up some components,
Also put in a bar across were the seatbelts originally mounted to mount the harnesses to
I also got the orange banded steelies on which were supposed to go on a black car, but will now get sprayed cream to go on the blue car. But it wouldn’t harm rocking the gulf racing colours for a few weeks
After trial fitting a Sebring front valance and from previous experience of these panels never lining up, I was reminded by the missus that I had a ST front spoiler in the shed, a quick jog down the garden and realizing that this would be a much better fit I thought balls to it that will do till I fix up a Sebring style one,
Got a MOT after blagging the guy that old car indicators never flashed they always stay solid: P tehehehe oh and a cock that walked past the car in the state it was in muttered s**t car under his breath at which point the old radiator exploded all over his lovely clean floor (Hi fived the steering wheel)
Did some spraying, got to say this is only a temporary rattle can jobby to last the winter start of summer shes going BMW Montreal Blue,
And due to funding lacking drove round like this for a bit
Then I got a grill,
And again.....MGB are practicall
And then I had an accident, there’s a local roundabout that’s renown for being stoopidly slippy, I’ve actually seen so many Beemers and even a triumph tr6 spin on here and mount the kerb smashing into a lamppost, so naturally its midnight and the rear tyres get a work out at the usual sliding spot and I got a little bit too sideways bottomed out the suspension onto an oil patch and tornado’d onto a grass verge destroying the ST valance and my ego as well.
I had sold the Sebring valance by this point and decided due to the shocking fitment anyways I would make my own valance with ducts from a rubber bumper valance. But just slapped it on till a later date to keep from getting in trouble
Got some Spax dampers in the meantime second hand and WOW just WOW what a difference these make! No pics I'm afraid tho
Found it rude to not remove the ARB whilst I had my head under there and my god the car really does stick in the corners now, severely impressed,
Parked up at a dodgy angle and decided that the cronic lows looked insane... but it scrapes too bad as it is so.....no
Plenty more pics to come but thats it for tonight
Future plans include replacing the standard electrics with my own loom and up to date fuse box,
MG C type bonnet skin with four bonnet pins for easy removal
Lower the front end further with lowering spindles and rebuilt chrome bumper lowered front sub assembly including spax shocks, camber lower wishbones and lowered springs
Respray BMW Montreal blue
Full roll cage, bucket seats and possibly new hard top roof
And once all that’s done a different power plant possibly Toyota or Lexus engine with manual box if I can find one. Maybe just maybe rover v8 be nice to do something different tho.
