Watched couple of 5th gears earlier as nothing was on, made me think of episode when they bought a lotus and bolted loads a curse word to it to reach the 200 mph mark. I don't think they managed it, but do remember a sapphire cossie doing it, and a corrola (not the cool one) Also remember reading about a calibra with a omega engine in that hit 200 to years ago
So got me thinking, what car with what set up would have the potential to reach it? And why? What special considerations would you have to take?

Cool idea for a thread, I take it we're thinking in terms of buget (or just cool) stuff?
One of the cheapest ways I can think of would be to get a B5 Passat saloon, bolt an S4 bi-turbo V6 into it with a couple of larger turbos, some decent con-rods and a 6 speed diesel box on it, lower it a lot, add some simple aero mods (front air-dam, extra undertrays etc) and see what happens.
I'd be looking for something as aerodynamic as possible and front wheel drive, with the potential to quite easily bolt in a powerful engine and long ratio box. All of which the Passat fits. FWD would keep the drag from the driveline down, aero's seriously important at those speeds and obviously you'll need a fair bit of power and the gearing to suit.
Not very stylish, but it'd surprise a few people!

i know its deviating a bit but charlie broomfield from ppc mag is gonna attempt 200mph in his 27 litre meteor v15 rover sd1 so there are still people mental/awesome enough to attempt this,i personally think a tvr cerbera v8 would be a good starting point for a 200 mph car

^Hasn't Mr Broomfield being saying he'll do that for 10 years or so now? It's getting to the point where Tyrone from Snatch could've done it faster in his SD1.

2003 Cl600 v12 biturbo.........got a spare £15000? Tvr cheap enough to start with, I'd imagine it would fall apart first tho before it reached top speed Passat sounds mental idea!

I got nicked at 163 in my old mr2 turbo years ago, i don't think it would have needed many mods to reach 200

So got me thinking, what car with what set up would have the potential to reach it? And why? What special considerations would you have to take? An F40 in just a little bit over factory tune (for a little leeway) for me please. ;D Yeah, Bonneville would probably be the best place to do it too.

when i had the 347ci V8 and tremec TKO manual box in the Mk3 cortina van i did some calculations that weren't far of as i tested out the fourth gear top end (on a private road ;-) ) and i worked out to 26" tires 3.55:1 final drive and the rpm at 6500 (would rev higher with the spec of the motor but for this experiment kept it to 6500 ) = 4th gear would easily do 142mph and would have been around 221mph in 5th though aerodynamics would probably have been a pretty serious issue as it did vibrate quite a bit above 155mph

I tell you what Seth, I think that the F40 would struggle at Bonneville. The altitude and conditions make it MEGA hard to do 200mph in a road car. For me, with sensible hat on, I would get an Omega because of the excellent low drag profile and long wheelbase, cheap power would arrive in the form of a BMW V8 and a pair of turbochargers, 525d manual gearbox, and some big'n'skinnes To be honest it has already been done in an omega here - (Lexus V8 and two turbos inside!) The most difficult way I know of was by this guy - www.bobnorwood.com/As part of a learning exercise he decided to try and get the production 1L LSR using an MR2, the result was an engine with a MASSIVE turbocharger and a stroke shorter than an F1 engine

IIRC Fifth Gear had their own vehicle they were trying to break the 200 mph barrier with themselves, the Cossie and Fensport GT4 powered Corrolla were the competition so to speak.
From memory Tiff was piloting an Esprit V8 turbo, which shat its turbo's and gearbox and cooling systems, the corrolla blew its gearbox, and the Copssie owners Cardie wearing mate piloted the Sierra past 200 mph sat in classic one hand on the wheel the other on the knob stance.

Was he not also smoking a fag? That Lotus was a poor choice, lovely car but not robust enough for 200mph chasing :/

Doing it differently Falcon XY GT fitted with a big block and supercharger + NOx for the final push, then I'de need a long range tank I recon I could get down to less than 3 mpg at the top end. I'de have a try here: (after checking for the bear in the air) And obviously a nappy for the driver as things happen awfully quickly above 140! I can remember (possibly an urban myth) there was a recall on the Holden HSV Monaro's in the Northern Territory as drivers complained they didn't know how fast they were going when out of town as they were still going strong when went off the clock...No speed limit out of towns in NT!!!

Omega is a nice idea, I would go for a Chevy v8. Maybe slaughter a Holden for it. If it needs to be unreliable, a Renault R25 with a Venturi twin-turbo DRV. Or a 190E with a E55AMG donor. Although, these cars might only do 300kmh. Based on their amount of horses. If I can have 460bhp from a Renault F4RT (Megane R26R) and a Volvo 480. Tgat might hit 200mph.

A nice quote from the Bob Norwood site -
'Going fast requires a TON of power. Air resistance goes nuts with speed, increasing exponentially as the cube of the increase in speed. Air resistance over 120 mph becomes extreme, which is the speed at which a human body free-falling through the air (prior to pulling the ripcord!) reaches terminal velocity and will not fall any faster. If you could go 100 mph on, say, 80 horsepower, to double speed to 200 mph requires 640 horsepower! If you could go 150 mph on, say, 210 horsepower, doubling speed to 300 mph requires 1680 horsepower!'
