I'm hunting a new daily off the back off my 156 V6 Wagon having done way too much hard work and needing a rest. I found out about these and now I want one - a LOT. pre-facelift isn't just as nice I think red is best, OK in white too look good modified a bit: The later ones came with a 24v 3.0L V6 that put out 210-225 brake and there was a Q4 version. Much want!

Do it! Guy up the road from me has one, always admiring it. Looks like they'd love a ferry too

Stunning cars. How bad is the rot though. My 145 was galvanised, but managed to rot underneath.

A fantastic looking car with great specification. I like the 166 too, but the cost of running it scares me. The 164 is a beautiful shape car.

I came VERY close to buying this last month. Location ruled it out - brain only just won against heart! www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C362659Awesome machines, and far more robust than anything wearing an Alfa Romeo badge would have you believe. Owned a Lusso V6 Auto a few years back. The noise alone was worth the price of admission.

Who doesn't want a 164? They look great, sound great, and are supposedly very good to drive. I was considering it before I got my Dedra , but that was too good to turn down.

I'm trying to! Only one for sale really is a black one with tan leather - will hold out for a red one with black. Hopefully. And actually it does have to be a V6! ;D

I've had several, and they are fantastic to drive. All of mine were US spec 3.0s.
Not sure if it applies to cars without Air Conditioning (all us 164s had AC) but the stepper motors for the climate control were a pain in the butt, I don't seem to recall rust being an issue, the gauges were often wrong, the Air Con always seemed to have odd issues but when it worked it kept the car nice and cool in a Florida summer (shocking for an Italian car). They just don't handle like a FWD car and I mean that as a compliment.
If you buy one change the cam belt. I used to assume they had a 2 year lifespan.
I'm sure they're rare in Europe but the automatics are weak.
The later cars are better, but the digital displays can give trouble.
Fast, comfortable and gorgeous. What's not to love?

Like the love child of a Proton and a Pug 605. In fact this one clearly took inspiration from Peugeots BTCC colour scheme... Still isn't out of my head...

The V6 engine can be trouble, the internals are not massively strong but they are massively expensive so make sure you get one with some service history or an obvioulsy loving owner.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

I've had a couple of 155 V6s, and they took the most astounding levels of abuse! My longest serving one must have done around 50k with me. Sound fantastic too.

Yeah seriously though don't buy an Alfa, they're really unreliable. It will definitely blow up if you buy it. Without a doubt.

[evil_villain] And soon they will all be mine [/evil_villain]I did a lot of research while looking for a suitable V6 engine for a project and I actually went to a couple of Alfa meets and joined a forum and asked owners who had owned various models of them for years, I like the Alfa engines because of the noise and the good looks and it was going to be mostly exposed. Even the hardcore Alfa fans told me the same thing, never buy a shabby V6 the engines can let go (chocolate pistons mainly) Alfa replacements are an arm and a leg and uprated ones will add your first born to the bill. No one said it was a curse word engine just that if not looked after they have a habit of breaking in an expensive fashion. Sudden defensiveness when something is criticised is often a pretty telling sign that it's justified. www.alfaworkshop.co.uk/V6_engine.shtml

Yeah but Alfa V6 (it works with the twincam, too!).
164 are cool but I'd want one with AWD. FWD seems weird on such a big powerful car.

Okay, so firstly from what you say it doesn't sound like you've ever actually owned one, whereas Ade has put 50k on one. Correct me if I'm wrong. Also I've found that what a lot of Alfa owners say can sometimes be taken with a pinch of salt. I was told not to buy a 155 - something about rattly engines. So of course naturally I bought one and have been dailying it (hard) for the past 9 months. The only problems I've had are; the clutch went (normal on any 17 year old car - also very cheap to replace) and I cracked the sump because I made it too close to the ground The thing is, it's running brilliantly and the amount of fun I've had driving it has made it worthwhile even if it blows up tomorrow. After all, it wasn't expensive to begin with. Anyway. 164s. Bought one yet?
