Has anyone got any clue as to a value of this?
Its a 1957 86" series 1 with a difference. Its on a shortened range rover chassis, so has coil springs, not leaf springs. Its also got a 300 tdi engine and LT77 gearbox out of the same car. Along with this, PAS from the same 300tdi.
I've driven this, and it makes a series 1 landy a genuine everyday car. Starts, stops and drives well.MOT exempt, but has a test until October anyway.
Totally solid all over and underneath, but the hard top has been brush painted......no landy would look, right without a bit of brush painting!
Anyway, I'm thinking of buying this, and could do with an idea off the more knowledgeable about its value?

oh dear....
well the only clue on value anyone on here can give you is what it's worth in parts.
that's because the landy, as you've told us, is in fact a cut down range rover chassis. this means it IS a range rover, BUT because it's had the chassis cut up, it's lost that identity as well...
the only thing thats 1957 about it will be the log book. and once the DVLA knows that, well then they'll want the thing sent in for a IVA test and then if it passes, it'll get given a new reg document and lose the tax and MOT exempt 1957 log book.
so.... make your own mind up.

Thanks for the reply. I hadn't even thought about that to be honest, and that'd obviously have an impact on the price.
Its a shame, because its a nice thing.......maybe I do a bit more digging about the chassis with its current owner before writing it off.

Basic searches on the net seem to agree with what you say. From what I can find out, the only way it would be "legal" with regards to tax and MOT exemption is if it was build before 1998, with proof. This, I don't have!
At £3500, its just too much of a risk for me.
Cheers for the heads up.

As an off-road plaything, it'd be great if you could pick it up for £1500-2000, but as said - the chassis/ id issues are what'll get you in trouble. With the advent of the MOT exemption, I'd hate to get pulled by plod and have to explain the fact it's got a chopped and re-welded chassis with no proof of who did it and for it to have the wrong log-book...
If you want a series 1, get on the series one club forum and you'll see something come up soon enough! A legit, scruffy 86/88 with a tdi won't set you back much more than what the coiler was up for. Series ones are worth big money now, best way in is to buy a road-worthy one needing work and tlc or get one as a project and build it up how you want it.
All the parts are interchangeable with later models which is great if you're not fussed about originality; mine's got Series 2 brakes, steering, gear box and a Disco 200tdi. Doing this can make the car really useable, i use mine daily with no problems. Got a big servo so it stops, later steering isn't totally vague, TDI starts first time every time and returns 40mpg, and with the parabolic leaf springs the ride's not bad either.

An original leaf sprung 80" series with a more modern engine isn't unusable as a daily anyway - as long as you don't need to carry anything in the back. They are amazingly small....A friend had a V8 80" with Range rover diffs which was far quicker off the mark than any vehicle of its type should be, fuel economy wasn't as bad as you might have expected either. From memory they are lighter than the air portable's as well...
