I'm looking to buy a Silver Shadow for £1800. It's a 1973 Shadow 1 with 5 month's MOT and tax. Runs and drives well, but is generally tatty. Interior and chrome is all good, body has some rust and filler etc., but still looks presentable. I'm looking to run it till the MOT runs out, then probably break it for spares, as another MOT is doubtful. My question is, would I get my money back by breaking it?

If it has a good interior, good chrome, and a good running engine and box i recon you'd get your money back.
Is a resto out of the question though ?, hate seeing old cars being broke that can be saved.

For that price, I reckon major things and cost would be involved in reparation any pics? Richierolls - guy on here would answer your question a lot better

How bad is the body and underneath? Unless its got a very bent MOT last time i can't imagine it being unsaveable 6 months later? Probably worth more as parts though, if the interior really is complete they are all expensive bits to buy.

From a distance it looks quite presentable, but the filler is obvious close up. Underneath appears good. What I don't want is to end up with a car that needs too much money spent on it for the next MOT, and not able to get my money back by breaking. I'm only considering it for a laugh, so I don't want to outlay hard earned and come a financial cropper...

If you can afford to buy it in the first place without struggling to make ends meet for the next 6 months, do it. Even if you use it for 6 months and it fails the next M.O.T. drastically, its still got to be worth at least £1100 spares or repairs to someone. So then you've lost just over £100 a month in "de-appreciation". But at least you can say you've owned a Rolls... Well thats the way I would look at it

Not to everyone's liking but I bet a banger racer would give you your money back. My mate had one and a German guy bought it to make into a BBQ, although I suspect that particular market is fairly niche.

Isn't the silver shadow the first of the Rollers with that dreadful hydro suspension? Each of those spheres has a 5 year lifespan and at least here in the states run well over $400 each and have to be filled with special RR fluid at over $100 a gallon.
Perhaps it is much cheaper for you gents on that side of the atlantic but I have had to do major hydraulic overhauls on low mileage Corniche's and my parts cost is well over $2500 alone. Remember if the suspension system fails you also lose the brakes.
I really don't like the way those things ride. They make me seasick. The whole cars are a major letdown to me. I don't understand the appeal.

Ask one or two of the specialist breakers what they'll give you for it. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Check it's MOT history online to check it's advisories and fails over the years.

Run it for a while and when the mot runs out, if you have space, hold onto it until the free tax kicks in next April, then sell it as a historic tax Roller needing work.
