Hi all I have been speaking to a production company I know someone who works there and over the next three weeks they are concentrating in coming up with car related tv programmes to air on national geographic channels and such like, I have been in the motor trade for 17 years and as I said to them the only way to see what people want to see I.e car enthusiasts on their screens is to ask them so don't be shy I need as many ideas as possible to put to them to see what would work and what wouldnt, don't worry if its a crazy idea tell me about it it may just work ! post ideas up here or pm me with details and ideas you have and if one of yours is taken on maybe the chance to be involved !

I'd like to see something in the style of the old 'The Car's The Star', that Quentin Willson did.

Roadkill Drive/Big Muscle The 'reality' stuff just ruins it for many of us, concentrate on the passion and fun side of car culture

get presenters who know what they are talking about, don't ask dumb questions about mpg or practicality. Actually, find a car mad presenter and get him to drive around in one of his own cars (not something rented or bought specially for the show, i want to see him fixing it if it breaks down) and check out some of the best of the modified cars, including trucks and bikes.

Here's a mad idea - Make a car programme about the cars, not the halfwit presenters. Don't fill them full of fluff and bullsh1t. Most car programme viewers I know actually find most farcical and I've known people actually get enraged by the amount of staged cr@p that gets aired. We all know TG is staged, but it doesn't take itself too seriously either. That 'Wheeler dealers' is one of the biggest loads of wibblepoo on the tv. Buys car for £3K. Spends £1.5k on parts. Spends 100 man hours fixing it. Sells for £5k and calls it a profit! WTF?!?!?!
A programme along the lines of some of the internet based items would be far better recieved imho. Something seeking out the unusual, the wild and just plain cool. But concentrate on the vehicles (and a little about the builder). The show's presenter should be on the sidelines, not centre stage.
Or something FACT based about buying/running/selling cars, where ALL the real world costs are considered

i agree with all of this more reality rather than staged definately this will be one of the points i put accross. lots of good ideas there gonna leave it till the end of this week and send a big long email with ideas and points to note like this and many more so keep the pointers and ideas coming never too many, they seem to be going more towards something to do with sales side of it from what i gather what though i don't know, i will read all of these daily if i don't reply or respond its cos i work a lot but will try and cheack at least daily so i can comprise a massive email to put to them and let you know of the outcome and where this went. and like the fact based bit ownards from "Mrspeedy" thanks

Agreed the current format of British shows is curse word. The most informative car programmes in the past were those done by the vet Mark Evans ("is born" series. That is the only show that went into detailed info when restoring a vehicle Need a show with real info, something along the lines of: - Insight to VOSA SVA/IVA etc
- Insight to MOT's & classics
- Detailed classic insurance info
- speak to the cottage industries that keep classics alive
- MIG & TIG welding
- Speak to the owners/clubs/shows etc.
KEEP IT REAL

Please please please just get them to make a car show that's not money based. Every show on telly recently seems to revolve around making money, or saving money, or 'look how much this is worth' showing off. I wanna watch about cars, cars as machines, cars as things of beauty, the cars place in culture and history and last but not least way to express the joy of driving. Not cars as status symbols or cars as ways to pocket some cash. To end my rant I'm just gonna say don't try to copy top gear in any way, the budget will never match, the results with never match and the program would always be seen as a wannabe.

How about contacting some of the proper car mags (PPC Magazine, Retro, Practical Classics etc...) and seeing if you can come up with something with them?

You could try following the builds for the ppc £999 challenge you just need to get hold of practical performance car and have a word with them. There is some mutual advertising thrown in as well.

A magazine style show could work, where you have features on cars/builders/communities, reviews/footage of car events (which could contain interviews with organisers, and show goers), possibly some "how to" stuff that the "presenter" carries out with some guidance on a car that they work on over the course of a series (basics on welding, engine maintenance, minor body work). The garage this presenter is working in could serve as the place where they do their links to other segments of the show.
Yes this may be fairly ambitious, and possibly costly, but basically imagine your favourite car magazine you normally pick up off the shelves, and re-create it in a format that works for TV. If your favourite magazine was full of only one type of article, would you still buy it? Variety is the spice of life an' all that!
It may be that you actually team up with a magazine and do video features on the content featured in the mag, which may reduce costs and allow some form of sponsorship deal to be sorted.
Examples of car/builder features
Example of an event feature
Imagine this interspersed with interviews with organisers, owners, etc.
Example of a "how to"
Not the best example, but it's simple enough so as not to go over anybody's head!
And I agree with the points raised above about it NOT being about money (be it saving, making, throwing away, etc.). It needs to be about the cars and the culture that surrounds them. Oh and sorry for all the videos. Some of them are really worth a watch though!

How about a show about the history of car modifying in the uk? could look at the different changes in styles and tastes over the years and give a wider audience an insight into why people mod their cars in the way they do?

how about a show that buys a make of car, modifies it following ideas rubbished by the cars owners club/ forum and then visits an owners club/ forum meeting unannounced to see their reaction to the car.

What we need is a car show that does several things. The first is one that does not portray enthusiasts as anoraks or dangerous drivers or slightly strange. Collecting art is cool collecting cars is seen as wasteful. It needs to reflect the position motoring in all its forms means to the UK. Manufacturing jobs, repairs, sales, insurance, recovery services, road building. It is the single item that has done more for freedom and mobilty to the masses and is responsible for massive tax take that the goverment cannot do without. It needs to reflect the good cars and their owners do, charity work, for example how much has Chris Evans raised with his cars for Children in need? The sporting bears do similar things. It needs to start standing up for the motorist, instead of Brake getting all the airtime what about a programe that exposes the speed kills lie and how safety has been sacrificed for cash cow cameras. One which celebrates progress and engineering excellance without having to apologies for anything.
It will never happen as advertising and demographic types will still want to blame cars for everything.

Anyone remember the episode of The Simpsons where Homer got to design his own car ? So the idea goes ... Take some people from all walks of life ? Butcher, baker .... ?? Ask them about there selfs and what they would want from a car given the lifestyle, job, sexual orientation, blar blar ! Design and build there hideous contraption, on a budget, ala up market scrapheap challenge stylize Then take it out on the streets and see what joe soap thinks of it ??, pro's and con's (for the car, not the people) See if it was a success or a pile of toilet ? and or condemn it to the showroom/crusher ? I'll leave it with you .. You can paypal my cut to Slot@forthewin
