Who the hell gives a Four-X about modern cars or how they compare to retros? The question can be comprehensively answered in two words; they don't.
Parameters have totally changed over the years. Modern cars are sold purely on economy and how nice a place it is to have a crash. Retro cars are/were sold on being interesting. Don't waste everyone's time comparing a Mondeo to an Anglia or whatever, what's the damned point? No-one looking at buying safe economical transport with a weather eye on what tax bracket it falls into is going to think "actually, y'know what, I wasn't sure if I ought to buy a new Signum or a 40-year old straight six Kommodore but now I realise what my life was missing all along was rust treatment".
Modern cars, to paraphrase Blur, are rubbish and TBH I'd struggle to describe one ten seconds after looking at it. The only difference is how stupid and overblown the designers can make the chromed headlight inserts. [/rant]

Here's an idea which needs very little outlay: A half hour or hour long round-up of grassroots motorsport, with maybe a few spin-off 5 minute features in between on some of the involved vehicles and their creators. So you have 5 minutes of 4x4s plugging around a quarry, and a 5 minute feature on one of the cut-down Discos with 500Nm torque and 38-inch tyres. Repeat with autograss race and winning Mini (eg.). Then Break. Come back, do same with truck race and a Scania build, then do classic saloon race and how Joe plum is building a MkX for next year. Break. Come back, do local rally coverage, wrap it all up. (Local show in N. Ireland called "RPM" does 30-60 minutes every so often covering each leg of the Irish Tarmac Rally, and there is another one doing each leg of the Road Racing champs called "Bikes!" Both on mainstream channels (1 & 3) but usually late night just after peak times, like 11.30pm, but both get good viewing.)
Presented by Chris Barrie?
Other idea is a real life docu-soap about a breaker or a used car sales place. With lots of footage of the crazies that come in every day. I get people that would make some good TV all the time; the guy that called me and my employees "a shower of *******" because we wouldn't sell him the plastic trims off a rare and complete bumper; the guy who came over 100 miles to buy a replacement roof for £75 and spent 45 minutes inspecting it with an oscilloscope only to find some miniscule rust and walk away from it (like whut...?!). If my CCTV had voice recording on it you would have your standard 13 1-hour episodes no problem. Car sales / restoration one would be good too, a mix of modern and classic, maybe a little bit of resto work, sort of like that California Classics or whatever it was called, but less shouty (and dare I say it, less American?). Again, with the interesting people and weird customers making for good viewing for average Joe but also car-nut Dave getting a good bit of car looky looky.
Or just bring back "scrapheap challenge". There was nothing wrong with that and Robert Llelwynn clearly needs the money (see Red Dwarf re-hash) so would be easily convinced.

i was thinking along the same lines as 'surprisingskoda' something about all the sunday racers who struggle with little or no bubget to do what they love.banger racing was covered recently as the entry level motorsport.there are so many types of 2 and 4 wheeled motorsport going on all over the country.this would give so many options for endless interesting shows.i would like to see scrapheap challenge back too, with Lisa Rogers the classic racing scene does seem to be ignored by tv compared to the dull modern touring cars.only a couple of minutes of races as an after thought on tv.i'd be more interested in the pre-race story.all that said i bet we get more of the same fake banter mockney nonsence! i have had a small involvement in a recent tv show and it's all smoke and mirrors, more comedy low-brow tv for the masses, sadly.get Mark Evans back.humour and real enthusiasm, all too rare in tv these days.let's hope things look up

Another vote for Chris Harris. So refreshing to find a motoring presenter that is actually a proper driving enthusiast, while still being able to convey an engaging review.

you could do a doc on the motortrade ins and outs, stuff like auctions, scrap yards, repo men, salesmen and do it gritty warts and all style, then theres the grass roots motorsport as already suggested, road rallying, hill climbs, sprinting etc just no drifting. then theres the classic car interest, stuff like wayne carini does with barn finds, customers, auctions and shows etc but in britain,so the mantra is with that if ya can't beat them.............join em !!!!
*edit* tbh I think a show called "Barn Finds" would be cool in the UK,a couple of geezers hunting down the rare weird and wonderfull found covered up sleeping in barns sheds and council garages etc to sell on to people who will use them, people love a Barn Find.

Another vote for grass roots motorsport, trials bikes and trials cars, easy to set up to film lots of off's and opp's moments dirt and dust flying, sidecar trials as well. Also autorally?cross (remember that from grandstand in the 70's) was always spectacular, I've never seen a Supermoto meeting on TV either.
Please no more constructed shows like scrapheap challenge, no more cocks who spend all the show shouting because they're in charge unless someone turns round and tells them to calm down or f--k right off unless they want to do the job on their own, nobody puts up with that sort of curse word in my/ the real world.

I read somewhere the other day that channel 4 are doing a show on scrapyards unfortunately that's all it said so I don't know anything about it.

Best of luck with it Groundedescort, I've been involved in motoring TV myself and it can be a massively frustrating process.
All the ideas on this thread are the type of stuff I'd want to watch, the .....Is Born series' with Mark Evans were my favourite car telly ever. I don't know how good the Is born ratings were, but we've not had anything like it in the 8 years since it ended.
The big problem is all these channels (Discovery, History, Natgeo etc) have a copycat mentallity and once they see one channel doing well with something they want to commission something that's almost exactly the same format, hence we get a glut of people opening selling storage lockers to sell utter tat, men on fishing boats and people uncessfully mining for gold or what have you. Telly is very flavour of the month.
It's very very difficult to get true car enthusiast telly commissioned, hence why the good car stuff ends up on you tube, and the networks are full of loud mouth aggressive cockneys and other such 'personality' based rubbish.
The budgets for these things are also a lot smaller than I imagine most people think they are, doing a decent car resto or a motorsport entry could use up an entire episodes budget with no cash left for actually filming the thing, and the networks will not pay for it, it's got to pay for itself.
Another thing is that the people in control are for the most part not interested in cars in the slightest.
Feel free to give me a shout if there is anything i can help you with.

Cheers Daz !
I love scrap yards I do,back in my early days of motoring I was buying the best mk2 escort stuff that was fitted to mk2 rs2000's off of sports or ghias etc and moving them on which was a speciality of mine, back then it was about saving money to make money and the cars I bought and sold always got scrap yard parts from the back of the automart or local yards before I shelled out for new stuff. Nowadays its called recycling...... you couldn't make it up !!!!!!!
if you did a prog on classics please call it Reverse Gear lol.

All this talk of "grass roots motorsport" and not one mention of lawnmower racing. Actual grass roots (cutting) racing.
Thank you very much. I'll be here all week. Try the fish

I've always thought that Retro Rides in general would make a good TV show since you always have a lot of different things to interest different tastes. In an hour long show you could have a modified classic, a restoration project, a sub-£1000 car and some kind of historical or informative feature. Perhaps put the odd tongue in cheek challenge in there too and you have a willing formula. I would certainly watch something along the lines of a look round Seth's MX5 Herald, a check in on the latest seemingly impossibly resto, a blast around Sheffield in Ryan's sub-£1000 Micra and then a feature on the history of Street Machine magazine. Have an end of series finale of something like taking one of BL's finest from Lands End to John o' Groats on a budget of less than £1000 and you have something that is full of win.

How about the worlds most shocking state vehicles, true south african examples to start 1.Nelson Mandela gets taken to hospital in military ambulance which breaks down along the way, and Mandela has to wait 45 minutes for another to arrive. 2. In a small town in kwazulu natal fire engines cannot leave the fire dept. because 2 are broken down and cant be repaired and the other 3 have expired licence discs, and the community have to rely on a private companys bush tenders to fight house fires 3. my favourite i was pulled over by a local police man in a marked car because i had a faulty brake light an argument ensued and i called the provincial traffic dept. they automatically impounded the patrol car for having an expired licence disc 3 worn tyres 1 working headlight and a crack across the wind screen in the drivers view a hole in the exhaust and no petrol cap. it made the newspapers the following day i got a slap on the wrist and a pat on the back the kadett(asta)mach2 got a slap on the tail light which got the bulb working again.

Does anyone remember GT Racer where the show followed the classic car racers weekends, something like that but with club racers or car show enthusiasts would be good rather than the expensive Ferraris/Astons/Bizzarrini etc.
That or bring back the Rev. Bob Torque!

Telly is very flavour of the month. I worked for the production company behind the ...Is Born series for a few years, unfortunately starting my career just as they were finishing An MG Is Born meaning I missed out on all the fun. I can tell you they were very much a ratings success, one of Discovery Home and Leisure's real hits, which is why they made 7 series over the years. Unfortunately Discovery made two major changes to their commissioning policy around that time, firstly deciding that they wanted Home and Leisure to appeal more to women as well as men and secondly that anything they commission must appeal to american audiences as well and european. It basically killed the channel, and any future chance of a new ...is Born.

goldnrust, it's such a shame because Mark was a fantastic presenter, really enthusiastic and the programme seemed to be the perfect balance of tech to entertainment.
I get the feeling that even something like Wheeler Dealers wouldn't get a look in as a new commission nowadays as it would be seen as too specialist and geeky, or if it did it would have that ass Bernie effing and blinding at Edd, and a couple of staged accidents for good measure.
I think in the current climate, if you want to make car enthusiast telly, you need to forget about the channels and do it on youtube.
