Personally not a fan of any of the coach-built adaptations. However, if all of us were attracted to the stunners, who'd be there for the fuglies? Hail the fugly fans! On the flip-side, this one is a case of when coachbuilding goes right...

And just to point out, a coachbuilt car is just that, like a suit from a tailors, you have what you want, providing you have the money to pay for it. So don't shot the coachbuilder, he's just trying to earn a living. And the owners who have their fantasies turned into metal, good luck to them, they're spreading the money around and making the world a more interesting place. ^^^^ This. I spent over ten years working as a designer for a consultancy that specialised in disgustingly large yachts. Sometimes a similar ethos in terms of taste etc, however it paid for a lot of people's salaries (designers, engineers, fabricators, suppliers, painters, trimmers, carpenters, welders etc), as is the nature of most bespoke items due to their construction being so labour intensive. As for the cars in this thread, whether they are the pinnacle of automotive art (or not) isn't really the point. The mere fact that they exist, and that someone chose to commission such unique, personalised exotic vehicles makes them interesting.

I know I'm probably in the minority but I still like them all. Having owned a bug eyed multipla I realise that I have issues, but I do think that tastes change with time. Also having been a designer in a previous life I know how frustrating it is to create something you hate for a demanding client. Let's give them a break and celebrate the good ones.

Ferrari 330 GT by Zagato Ferrari 250GT Spyder by Zagato These two are awesome. I'd happily have either... The first one reminds me of one of my all-time favourite cars, the Lamborghini Espada...

This thing always hurts my eyes - the fact they just added straight-edged windows to the rear bugs the hell out of me!

This thing always hurts my eyes - the fact they just added straight-edged windows to the rear bugs the hell out of me! Next time you see a Volvo 240 estate, look at the rear doors: Same doors as the saloon, but without the saloon's sloping roofline at the back. Door top slopes down while roofline doesn't. I never knew that until someone at Area 52 pointed it out and now I can't stop looking at it.

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

I'd rather see a thread of nice cars than a thread of cars you don't like ... it is very un-RR to be honest.. and this is the second such thread. :/ very un rr I thought it was a forum for people interested in retro cars in general I think threads like this are interesting seeing some coachbuilders ideas of how a car should look not just about cars everybodies got to love

very un rr I thought it was a forum for people interested in retro cars in general I think threads like this are interesting seeing some coachbuilders ideas of how a car should look not just about cars everybodies got to love It is literally the MOST RR thing. It is in many ways what makes this place, this place. From here (2nd point) : retrorides.proboards.com/thread/45829/retro-rides-modus-operandi-readIt isn't that this thread is about cars that are perceived bad, it is the intent going in is to ridicule them. The Acceptable In The 80's thread has a lot of dubious taste, but it is affection for the dubious excesses of the 80's that make the thread fun and not something you could just as easily see on internet turds like Barry Boys. Would love to see a thread of awesome coachbuilt beauties.. particularly from more obscure cars/sources.

Love them all Me too! Some really interesting eccentric beauties on this thread, especially the ones that were posted with the intention of demonstrating the opposite.

Well, I'll agree with the OP in that none of these examples do anything for me. Personally, I see the thread as an irreverent poke at the efforts of some coach-builders.
On the flip-side, those efforts reflect evolution and survival-of-the-fittest. Sure, some folks will like them, but if they don't prove popular, they die out.
It does strike me as odd that Ferrari let coach-builders restyle their output, while Maranello dances all over kit-car reproductions.

For some positivity, I'll offer a coach-built Porsche 959 Speedster. I remember this from a magazine in the early '90s : the buyer took delivery of a spanking 959 and managed to crash it within 45 minutes. 1000 man hours went into the repair/conversion to :

It does strike me as odd that Ferrari let coach-builders restyle their output, while Maranello dances all over kit-car reproductions. I very much doubt that there is anything they can do to stop a coachbuilder from designing their own bodywork - after all, it is still a Ferrari, just a modified one. The kit car issue is a completely separate one, and is due to intellectual property infringement.

I don't see a single car in this thread that I dislike. Really?,Nard have done a brilliant job of 'improving' the Daytona....
