i was expecting to see a 2.0 8v or a red top in the nova tbh You and me both, if not at the start but by the end, bit disappointed they didn't do the you have this much budget now modify it........ Plus with no 205 GTI I think they missed an opportunity

Enjoyed it, couple of bit not so much - but overall thought it was great. Surprised at lack of 205 though.

I agree, the nova SRi wasn't really a "hot hatch" when the likes of the GSi and GTe were available at the time, but then I doubt they'd have got one for sub 1k. Theres much debate on facebook in the dub circles about what happened to the golf... I personally aren't that bothered as it appeared to be a bit of a shed... Rotten fuel filler area, not to mention the bad taste in mods. Plus it didn't have enough doors haha

I watched it and was disappointed. Usually don't watch it because I have no care in the world about reviews of high end porches etc. Sometimes the specials are okay, but I'm getting sick of the usual staged attempts at comedy which are so see through.

Yesterday's Hot Hatch challenge was absolutely hilarious right up to the point where they went to Wales and seemingly lost the plot completely.
There were so many challenges they could have done modifying the cars, or doing handbrake turns in supermarket carparks etc. but instead they just farted about with "big boys toys" and then blew the cars up for absolutely no reason.

I too felt it was a bit weak, although some bit's were good the hill climb the rest seamed just too staged.... Hopefully it will get better, but will it they've almost done everything, guess they'll be a dash across europe. edit, were's my bloody avata gone bloody photobucket

Good entertainment. I lol'd several times. (I will confess I contributed to the sterotype of putting Novas in ditches.)

Lets have a look at what was on the other major channels at 8PM yesterday.
BBC 1: Call the Midwife - A drama about Nuns and an Eastenders reject having a baby. ITV: All-Star Family Fortunes - Someone off of Benidorm and a Radio 1 DJ pretending to find Vernon Kay funny. Channel 4: Scandimania - A public schoolboy having a holiday in Sweden. Channel 5: Arachnophobia - The last half of a 90's film about spiders.
And you lot are moaning about a program about people doing exactly what we would do if we were given X-Amount of money to film ourselves messing about in cars.

Please can you go on every car forum in the world and post the same thing?

I still think it's great - bit of light-hearted entertainment based around cars, awesome stuff. Don't necessarily need the 'serious' side of things too much anymore with the advent of /Drive and MotorTrend etc on youtube!

I've just flicked through the Hill climb bit and I'm really pleased to say that in my old road going 205 GTi my best time, from when I competed there was faster than 'teenage Stig'.

I was very unimpressed by it, the point the nova came out the shop on its side I turned it off, and by the sounds of the rest of it I made the right choice, don't think I will be bothering with the rest of the series, tired of giving it the benefit of the doubt to then be disappointed by it

It's an entertainment show, which also features some cars. The presenters are actors who play a part. Once people understand this, they can make a fair judgement about it. For me, it was brilliant; old-school motors from the era when I passed my test and general farting around, because they can. Great to see the trays brought back out too Usually don't watch it because I have no care in the world about reviews of high end porches etc. I don't care about high end porches either. Not sure your going to find out much about them on Top Gear, regardless? It's a car-based programme. As Will Carter said, the alternatives were...interesting. Maybe you could have watched Z-list Family Fortunes with Vernon Kay?

Don't get me wrong, I watch it but mainly because there isn't anything else on which isn't a great endorsement is it. I'm surprised last nights episode was the first of the series, I thought it was quite weak and would have done better as the second or third rather than the series opener. For me it doesn't bode well.
I like the show, Hammond still annoys me intently but he ho....... but I do think it needs a new format. The 'news', star in a car, it's all a bit formulaic and needs a bit of a shake up. The camera work and editing is still the best on telly though and I watch it for that really rather than the content.

As said, its more watchable than anything else on at that time in my opinion. I don't go out of my way to watch it anymore but I don't dislike watching it, I can think of worst things to watch. BUT it has turned into more of a middle aged comedy act WITH cars rather than a program about what they're actually supposed to be showing fronted by 3 good presenters with good humour... Which is fair enough tbh but I think they could concentrate a bit more seriously on what most people want to watch it for instead of disregarding the essentials of what we want to know and see by turning EVERYTHING into a p!ss take, even if a lot of it IS funny. Take a new hyper car and they'll get (a little more) serious and provide some really good viewing...Anything older than a few years or less than the cost of the house and they just want to take the curse word and trash it with no real direction or point. The 80's challenge was a really good idea but badly executed, even if there were some lol moments and I thought it was overall good viewing. 80's hot hatches can be as good as their newer counter parts, instead of giving a true reflection of that, they just showed that they're cheap, sh!t, fall apart and need randomly blowing up. They can't really be arsed with what they set out to do so they bodge their way through it making the "challenge" pointless. I personally would have been interested in good examples being tested out and critiqued whilst comparing them to their modern day equivalents to see the good and bad of having new or older models WITH their interpretation. Can't believe I've just took the time to write an analysis of a car program that doesn't take itself too seriously, maybe THAT's why they do what they do Take it for what it is tbh.

Andy Wilman (the series producer) was on the Chris Evans radio show last week, and he said the defining factor in what they do is 'would a 9 yr old like it?' They have discussed 'going serious' but have decided to keep on what they are doing.
I was laughing like a right idiot watching sundays episode. That's what i've come to expect now though, and i don't expect a serious car review, of say, the latest euro shopping hatch.
Having said that, a bit less scripted 'tomfoolery' and a few slightly more serious topics now and then to balance it out wouldn't go amiss.
But the big point is this, its not a serious motoring review show. Its an entertainment programme that brings in millions of £££ for the BBC. Think 'Last Of The Summer Wine' with cars ..... Once you get your head round that .......
