Reading my sons paper (The Star) today I saw about VED bands - "Trouble is, the goalposts are due to move, though nobody knows when". Anyone know more about this ie what is happening ?

My prediction; as they are due to do away with the paper tax disc to save money.... Everything will get more expensive, (to cover the cost of doing away with the paper disc and buying in a new computer system to oversee this, which won't work until it has cost at least 3 times what it was budgeted at and taken twice as long as it should), except for the people running hybrids with a 5 years design life who will get a discount (for leaving a huge future legacy of heavy metals to dispose of) in return for having to buy a new car every 6 years as its not worth replacing the batteries. Edit - having only seen the Mail while out shopping I didn't realise anything was happening in the world except for either a tube strike or potential flooding down south

There is no need for a 'new' computer system, the computerised control of VED has been in place for years. From the database that controls ANPR to the issuing of reminders about VED expiration.
The lack of a physical disc makes no difference.

Quite correct a prosecution won't go anywhere, but that's of no benefit to anyone on the day when they impound your car, until you can 'prove' it IS taxed & don't say it won't happen cos it happens every day when they think something is not insured, cos their system says so

Look, you're not reading what's already been said. It's exactly the same computer system - if that was going to happen it would have ALREADY happened. Do you not think they've thought of this?

Yeh & they still get it wrong what bit of that don't you seem to get

Yeah, they get it wrong with the current system in place. The system that is staying in place. So what's going to make them get it any more wrong or wrong more often?
Carry the receipt or print out that proves you've paid your road tax with you, you could even fold it up and stick it in your now redundant tax disc holder so you always have it with you, so if you do get pulled you can prove you've paid. Also carry a copy of your insurance policy and your insurer's phone number for the exact same reason.

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

I didn't say they would get it 'any more wrong' i just said they will still get it wrong I do & will but not everyone will, I'm not disputing there are ways to prevent/reduce the problem, all I'm saying is it WILL happen

Well, good. Now we all know to look out for that problem. Forewarned is forearmed and that.

I think most want that, and have done since the beginning of time. The more fuel you use, the more you pay. Everyone who uses the roads pays. It's pay as you burn and makes the most sense. My only reservation is that we already pay extortionate tax on fuel..

Strangely enough our local post office closed down recently. The general store next door bought it and knocked through. It is now a post office again. The guy in there said from April you don't have a physical tax disc anymore! It will be online and post offices won't be doing vehicle excise duty anymore. Gonna be a nightmare for people with no knowledge of computers!

The disappearance of VED discs isn't happening until October 2014, and you will still be able to renew it at the Post Office.

Thankfully they don't do VED! I'll put him straight later.

Personally i would prefer them to simply add VED onto fuel duty Thats a great idea, you do know that your weekly shop would go up by about 25% if they did that though...in fact everything that you buy would go up. As curse word as the VED system is, I am quite happy to keep it as is thanks. If we do change it, maybe change it to be the same as it is in Oz, 3rd party insurance comes with your road tax & it is valid from the day (not month) you tax it. Would solve the problem of uninsured drivers instantly.

An in any event, when you purchase your tax online or in the Post Office you'll get a receipt confirming the purchase. Just stick it in your glovebox. And if you get email confirmation keep that too.

The more I hear that we should carry our life's history to prove that we are allowed to carry on doing the normal day to day stuff, the more I imagine it becoming worryingly closer to this; It seems somewhat ironic that 'they' do away with physical items and rely more on computers, databases and 'virtual reality' stuff, whilst we have to resort to printing out everything and carrying more and more hard copies with US to prove our entitlements when 'their' system cocks it all up!
