Here I am with insomnia again Anyway thinking about a mates Rover 600, he had from nearly new, I realised I hadn't seen one for ages so had a quick look on eBay and only 4 for sale. Looks like it's destined to be a model that soon gets forgotten ! Paul H

Its a great shame. I love Rovers but people don't seem to give them a chance, they've never been worse than any other old car I've owned.

I've got Rovers.

And because the 600 was basicaly 99% Honda it was the most reliable Rover in the range at the time, until BMW took over, then the rest is history, some say BMW only bought Rover for 4X4 & front wheel drive technology.....

So many bad examples, but takes very little to make it into a very tidy car. My dad had a black SLi, and i remember thinking a 2.0 16v was the fastest thing on earth at the time (i was fairly new to it all then). They are stunning cars when done right, probably one of the few Rovers i'd think about owning. This one used to live around the corner from me, and without the graphics was always a striking car... Turbo too:

The 620ti looked good on paper too, quite a sleeper.

620Ti is a cracking car, 197bhp in your grandad's slipper. Mate of a mate had an 820Ti that was fast becoming too rotten to be roadworthy, but the mechanicals would not die...

The 620ti looked good on paper too, quite a sleeper. There was a pool car 620ti where I was working in the late 90s. It was unbelievably quick (to me, as a 21 year old) but it was also dead comfortable and really well spec'd. It never went wrong as far as I was aware but it was really badly looked after being a pool car. There were also a couple of tired early E30s (two doors, six cylinders but auto 'boxes) and a nearly new petrol Shogun in the car pool. Not a bad selection really.

The 600 is supposed to be a superb vehicle...
I remember seeing an article on the BMW takeover of Rover in the mid-90's where the 600 had been fitted with a BMW grille!
These things are becoming very rare but they do indeed have a hell of a ton of potential...

Scrapped one a few months ago, 620SLI, can't really comment on whether it was any good because I never actually drove it, bought it for £200 with the idea of doing one of those banger rally's, never came to pass though so I scrapped it with a car recycling place, got £180 back
I also had a 420SDi as a run around for a while, it was an ok car, but pretty forgettable
Never once missed or regretted getting rid of either of them, however, I have on occasion wanted to own an 827 with the 24V Honda V6 engine, because my mates dad had one when I was younger and it was ballistic, at least it felt like it back then when we all had 1.1’s.

As an aside, I'm told that an Accord Type-R engine will fit in a 623, and it only takes four wires to get the VTEC working. Don't know how true it is...

I have a 620Ti and its a lovely car. Very understated and decently quick in its day. Gives a Cossie a run for its money!! It's been in storage for a couple of years (seven actually!!)but I intend to get it back on the road this year and have some fun.

Most seem to agree that the 600 was a much better car than Rover's flagship of the time, the 800.

If it was closer to the design sketches, it may have been a hit, how nice does this look?! Instead of aiming for the Sierra/Mondeo, Cavalier etc they went for the BMW 3 Series. Probably a mistake. Great writeup on the car and its history here: www.aronline.co.uk/blogs/cars/rover/600/

Wow - That pic takes me back. I used to work for Rover. I borrowed a grey 620Ti just like that for a few months when I had to commute between Cardiff and Gaydon (200 miles every day ). It was comfy and blindingly quick (think M50 at 6am).

I have had two of these and they are sublimely comfortable cars! I would happily rock a diesel one as a daily!
Only issue that I had was the window mechanisms are made of chocolate! I loved the fact that it was a much prettier Honda Accord and even the inside of the door panels have a big Honda badge on them!
4*114.3 hubs means a plethora of JDM wheels that can be fitted as well!

Rysz. I'll second the window mechanisms Put several back together at work and it was a regular thing putting my brothers drivers window back on its runners, tho to be fair it'd done 180k when he got it! Still drove like it had done half that, went well for an auto too. He had a diesel one afterwards and it's still one of the best oil burners I've driven.

Mechanic's rule #1... If the car works, anything left on the floor after you finished wasn't needed in the first place

IMHO one of the best looking Rovers.I prefer it to the 75, which is a little bit too much National Trust

I had a 620sdi and I loved it. I got well over 50mpg and I'm sure I dozed in the front seat more than once. Only needed it for three weeks so drove around with no tax then sold it. Also had an 820si, and a 414si. All utterly brilliant. And so was the 75 Tourer in duck egg blue that was a pool car at a previous job. Honda Civic Type R, Fiesta/Mondeo STs, RX8 Prodrive - this is what the dealership sold, and the Rover is the car I remember fondest!
If I had an excuse for it, I would buy another one. As it is, I'm only a fairly small shove away from buying a Montego Turbo or a MG ZT V8.
