Hi I have a problem, Yesterday I tried to start my car after it running fine that day,and the starter made a loud noise, And then just made a clicking noise, I took the starter off to find this , Took out the piece it chipped of, Just blowed £180 on a new Bosch starter and it's done exactly the same thing,it sounded like it was hitting, but only tried it twice,I can't see any teeth damage from what I can see obviously can't see the whole fly wheel, but I'm stuck as it's my only car at the moment, another starter isn't going to fix this I believe is there anything anyone can suggest Thank you

Will the engine turn by hand or a bump start?

Yeah it turns ok,It won't bump cause auto, After a look in the day I've found this I'm hoping this is the cause for the starter breaking, and not a wrong starter,I'm trying to see if I can get a new flywheel

Sorry. Missed the auto bit. It's a flex plate, rather than a flywheel. Don't go asking for an M10 flywheel, you'll get the wrong thing.

not at all, just need to collect all the bits and swap them over, you might have some wiring to prod with.

If it's a e21 316 5 speed it will fit I'm guessing regardless of year

Speedo drive will be your problem with a manual conversion. Boxes with speedo outputs are getting hard to come by. I'm working on a 2002 just now with a 5 speed in it and they've done an electronic speedo conversion. Looks very straightforward. I'm going to take a good look, but it seems to be easy enough.

We'll if I find one in a e21 then il be sorted rather than a e30 but it's something to bare in mind

An E30 box has a different bolt stud pattern and will not mate up to your block anyway.
I may have a manual conversion available v. soon from my 316 as I'll be upgrading.

An M10 engined E30 box won't fit? Are you sure, Will? I've put E30 M10 engines into E21s and 2002s in the past.

Your right they will fit I just ment the speedo drive issue,I've bin offered a e21 5speed overdrive that's fitted to a 83 316 with all the bits,so just need to do some research about wiring and others jobs needed in order to make it all go smoothly

'82 was about the time of the change to electronic speedo.
The electronic speedos are marked "electronic" not surprisingly.
If you need to convert it, you'll need the chopper and sensor out of the diff and some wiring and the full speedo.

The speedos aren't different between manual and auto. They differ between mechanically driven and electronic. If the speedo in your car is mechanical, as it probably is, the likelihood is that a box out of an E30 with its electronic speedo will not have the drive to allow you to connect up to your speedo cable.
Change the propshaft guibo and gearbox mounts when they're out. I'd take the time and freshen up the gear change linkage bushes too. 5 minutes on the bench. Hours of wriggling and trapping hands lying on your back.

I've just got a 5 speed from a e21 316, So it's gonna have a manual speedo just like mine , Yeah sounds like a good idea
